Recoil PW8D4 Review: 400 W RMS 8-Inch Subwoofer, Amplifier Match and Rival 8s

6 min read

The Recoil PW8D4 is an 8-inch dual 4-ohm subwoofer from Recoil's Echo Pro range, rated at 400 W RMS and 800 W peak, with a 2 in four-layer voice coil and an IMPP cone. Its Indian MRP is ₹12,000, the lowest in the 8-inch comparison further down. It suits a buyer who wants a compact sub at a modest MRP and can supply an amplifier near 400 W RMS at 2 ohm. You can see it on our Recoil PW8D4 product page.

Recoil PW8D4 Echo Pro 8-inch dual 4-ohm subwoofer

Quick summary

  • The 800 W in the product name is the peak figure, which Recoil Audio USA's table labels MAX. Plan around 400 W RMS.

  • The 105 mm mounting depth, 184 mm cut-out and 8.8 mm Xmax appear only on Recoil Audio USA's page.

  • Recoil's pages describe the voice-coil material in different ways, so treat that detail as unsettled.

  • No owner reviews or independent tests turned up in October 2026.

Power, impedance, coil size and cone agree across Recoil's own PW8D4 page, Recoil Audio USA's page and our listing. The Thiele/Small figures, Xmax and mounting dimensions come only from the Recoil Audio USA page.

What the 800W in the product name means

Recoil's own page is not consistent about the label. Its headline says 800 Watts Power with no label, while the line beneath gives Peak Power 800 Watts and RMS Power 400 Watts. Recoil Audio USA's description calls 800 W a peak and its table labels the same figure MAX. A peak or max figure describes a short burst, and the 400 W RMS figure is the one to size an amplifier against.

The same page says the black high-temperature coating on the coil lets the woofer handle more than its rating, which is Recoil's claim. Recoil's warranty terms, written for the US, say blown or burned voice coils are not manufacturing defects, so do not plan around that headroom.

Where Recoil's pages disagree on the voice coil

Recoil's own page and our listing describe a black aluminium voice coil. Recoil Audio USA's bullets say copper, and its specification table says ASV. The pages alone do not settle which is right, so the table above lists all three. The power ratings and impedance are the same on every page.

Wiring and amplifier match for 400 W RMS

Recoil Audio USA says the dual 4-ohm coil can be wired to 2 ohm in parallel or 8 ohm in series. The amplifiers below list ratings at 1, 2 and 4 ohm and none at 8 ohm, so 2-ohm wiring is how you reach their listed power.

The Deaf Bonce Machete MFA-1.500 (₹23,990 MRP) lists 360 W RMS at 2 ohm at 14.4 V in a 161 x 152 x 55 mm case. That is below the sub's 400 W RMS, so it cannot drive the PW8D4 to its full rating. The Deaf Bonce Apocalypse AAP-800.1D (₹23,990 MRP) lists 480 W RMS at 2 ohm at 14.4 V in a 160 x 135 x 64 mm case, which is above it, so set its gain with a test tone. Its manual says the amplifier may heat up to 80 °C in use, so leave it room to breathe.

If you have not yet fitted a separate amplifier, our guide to the need for an amplifier in car sound systems explains what it adds.

These are list figures from each maker's product pages, and makers do not necessarily rate drivers on one common basis. Not on page means that maker's page gives no figure.

The PW8D4 has the lowest MRP here and the second-highest RMS figure. The Deaf Bonce Machete MF-08S lists more, 600 W RMS and a 12 mm Xmax, at a higher MRP. The Alpine S2-W8D4 lists the largest Xmax, 13 mm one way, and publishes a sealed box range of 5.1 – 15 litres. The Hertz CS 200 S4 is a single 4-ohm coil rated 150 W continuous, with a recommended sealed box of 9.6 litres.

Box volume and the 105 mm depth

Recoil gives no recommended enclosure volume or type, though the US page lists a Vas of 12.4 L and a Qts of 0.58. The Alpine and Hertz box figures belong to different drivers, so they are not a recommendation for the PW8D4. VA3 Car Studio builds custom subwoofer enclosures. Whatever the volume, the box must be deeper than 105 mm behind the baffle, and the cut-out is 184 mm.

What owners and reviewers say about the Recoil PW8D4

We found no owner reviews or independent tests when we looked in October 2026. Recoil's own PW8D4 page shows Reviews (0), and Recoil Audio USA's page shows no reviews or rating. DIYMobileAudio and Sonic Electronix search pages returned errors, Amazon blocks automated access and a CarAudioForum search came back empty, so discussion may exist that we could not read. If you run a PW8D4, leave a comment with your box and amplifier.

Who should buy the PW8D4, and who shouldn't

Buy it if you want an 8-inch driver at a low MRP, will fit a separate amplifier near 400 W RMS at 2 ohm, and accept that its dimensions and Thiele/Small figures rest on one US page.

Look elsewhere if depth is tight, since our Recoil PWS8D4 listing gives a 73.2 mm mounting depth, though at 250 W RMS. Also look elsewhere if you want a maker-published box volume or a larger Xmax on paper, where the S2-W8D4 lists 13 mm against the PW8D4's 8.8 mm.

Installation notes for Indian cars

Cut the baffle to the listed 184 mm and screw the driver down evenly on Recoil's mounting gasket, which the maker describes as air-tight. Fuse the power cable near the battery, keep it away from signal cables, and fix the box so speed breakers cannot shift it. In the monsoon, keep the amplifier clear of any place in the boot where water collects. VA3 Car Studio in Ghaziabad offers professional installation.

Price and where to buy

The PW8D4 has an India MRP of ₹12,000. VA3 Car Studio often sells below MRP, so check today's price on the PW8D4 product page. Recoil's warranty terms are written for the US and state no India terms, so confirm them with Recoil or its distributor before you order.

The bottom line

The PW8D4 is the lowest-MRP driver in our 8-inch comparison and carries the second-highest RMS rating in it. The evidence behind it is thin: the dimensions and Thiele/Small figures come from one US page, Recoil's pages disagree on the coil material, and we found no owner feedback. Pair it with an amplifier near 400 W RMS at 2 ohm and measure before you build the box.

Recoil PW8D4 FAQ

Is the Recoil PW8D4 400 W or 800 W?

It is rated 400 W RMS. The 800 W in the product name is the peak rating, which Recoil Audio USA's table labels MAX. Size the amplifier by the RMS figure and set the gain with a test tone.

Which amplifier suits the Recoil PW8D4?

Look for a mono amplifier that lists about 400 W RMS at 2 ohm. The Deaf Bonce MFA-1.500 lists 360 W and the AAP-800.1D lists 480 W at 2 ohm, both at 14.4 V.

What cut-out and depth does the PW8D4 need?

Recoil Audio USA lists a 184 mm cut-out, a 105 mm mounting depth and a 215 mm overall diameter. Recoil's own page and our listing give no cut-out or mounting depth, so measure the driver before you build a box.
