DS18 ZXI-654 Review: ZXI 6.5-Inch Coaxial Speakers, 80 W RMS

7 min read

The DS18 ZXI-654 is a ZXI series 6.5-inch two-way coaxial speaker, sold as a pair and rated at 80 W RMS and 240 W maximum into 4 ohm, with a listed sensitivity of 89 dB. Its Indian MRP is ₹12,990, the same as the 4x6-inch ZXI-464 and against ₹22,990 for the ZXI-62C component set. It suits a buyer with round 6.5-inch openings who wants a 1-inch PEI tweeter on the woofer and has an amplifier to drive it. This review keeps the 80 W RMS rating apart from the 240 W maximum and the 180 W in DS18's web address, sets out where its cone and sensitivity labels disagree and reports what DS18's own shop reviewers say. You can see the pair on our DS18 ZXI-654 product page.

DS18 ZXI-654 6.5-inch 2-way coaxial speakers

Key takeaways

  • DS18 rates the pair at 80 W RMS and 240 W maximum. The 180 W in DS18's web address matches neither figure, so ignore it.

  • Sensitivity is 89 dB in DS18's spec table, its manual and our listing, while DS18's key-features list reads Pair ~ 87dB.

  • DS18's heading, spec table and manual say glass fibre cone, while its overview says Kevlar. Our listing's name follows the Kevlar label.

  • It needs a 141 mm cutout and 60 mm of mounting depth, and one reviewer on DS18's own shop needed spacers to fit.

Figures come from the DS18 product page and the ZXI range manual, matched against our listing.

DS18 ZXI-654 power: 80 W RMS, not 240 W or 180 W

DS18's heading reads 80W RMS, the key features list MAX Power as 240 Watts and RMS Power as 80 Watts, and the spec table and range manual give RMS 80 W and maximum 240 W without defining either term. The browser title and overview heading carry 240 Watts with no RMS figure, and that is the maximum. The web address carries 180 W, which matches neither the RMS rating nor the maximum, and DS18 does not explain it. If you meet 240 W or 180 W in a search result, do not read it as RMS.

DS18's help page defines RMS as the constant power supplied to the speaker and advises choosing an amplifier able to output the speakers' correct RMS rating. For this pair that points to about 80 W RMS per channel at 4 ohm, and because DS18 does not define its maximum rating we would not size an amplifier against 240 W. We found no DS18 guidance on factory-radio use or amplifier pairing for this model, so work from the numbers. Our guide to whether you need an amplifier is a good place to start.

What a 6.5-inch coaxial can and cannot do

The listed response runs from 40 Hz to 20 kHz, DS18 recommends a 60 Hz high-pass and the woofer's free-air resonance is 64 Hz. Read that as a door speaker for mid-bass, vocals and treble: set the high-pass near 60 Hz and let a subwoofer take what is below it. The 4x6-inch ZXI-464 lists a response from 80 Hz and a 100 Hz high-pass, so the larger ZXI-654 starts lower, as a 6.5-inch would be expected to.

A coaxial puts the tweeter on the woofer's axis. DS18 lists a 25.4 mm PEI dome with a neodymium magnet, and its overview describes sound with little to no distortion, which is the maker's claim and not a measurement. The spec table and manual list no crossover for this model.

Cone and sensitivity: where DS18's labels disagree

On the cone, DS18's heading, spec table and manual say glass fibre, while the overview calls it a Kevlar cone. Our listing's name and web address say Kevlar. We cannot tell you which is correct, so treat the cone material as unconfirmed. It does not change the power or fitting figures.

On sensitivity, DS18's spec table and manual give 89 dB, and so does our listing, while the key-features list reads Pair ~ 87dB. DS18 does not say which is right. We show 89 dB, the spec-table figure, and flag the 87 dB line because DS18 does not explain it.

Fitting a 6.5-inch coaxial: cutout, depth and spacers

DS18 lists a 141 mm (5.55 in) front-mount cutout and 60 mm (2.36 in) of mounting depth. The speaker measures 165 mm across and 72 mm deep overall, with a 94 mm motor diameter, so check the space behind the panel as well as the opening. The manual has no installation steps and no box-contents list, and neither DS18's page nor our listing says whether grilles, wiring or mounting hardware are included.

One reviewer on DS18's shop needed spacers to fit the speakers in their car and bought them separately. That is one car, so measure the opening and the depth before you order.

What owners and reviewers say about the DS18 ZXI-654

We did not find independent owner reviews, forum threads or magazine tests for the ZXI-654 that we could read when we checked in October 2026. What we could read is on DS18's own shop page. It is the maker's shop, so these reviews are not independent, and none of the ones we could read carries a date.

The page states sixteen reviews and displays five. The rating bars show fourteen in the first bar and two in the second, with none in the others and no star labels or average in the text we read. A first-time DS18 buyer is very satisfied, says the speakers sound a lot better and plans to buy the component set for the front. Another says the sound is great, and a third has not installed them yet but calls them high quality, so that entry is a first impression and not experience of use.

An owner who upgraded from a factory Bose system says they sound great. The last visible entry is from someone returning to car audio after a long break, who found the factory speakers sounded poor with an aftermarket head unit, says the coaxials look and sound great, needed spacers to fit and plans to add 6x9s next. None is critical of the sound, the entries we could read do not say what amplifier or power level was used, and the sample is small and friendly. If you run a pair, tell us about the car and the amplifier.

DS18 ZXI-654 vs G6.5XI, ZXI-62C and ZXI-464

The DS18 G6.5XI (₹5,490 MRP) is a GEN-X series 6.5-inch coaxial, rated 50 W RMS and 150 W maximum at 86 dB, with a paper cone, a Mylar tweeter and grilles listed as included. It lists a response from 35 Hz against 40 Hz here, and a 142 mm cutout with 54.5 mm of mounting depth, so the ZXI-654 asks for about the same opening and a little more depth behind it. The ZXI-654 lists the higher power and sensitivity for more than double the MRP, but not a lower response.

The DS18 ZXI-62C (₹22,990 MRP) is the 6.5-inch component set in the same series, with a separate tweeter and a crossover. Its post covers where DS18's RMS figure for that set differs between its product page and its manual. The DS18 ZXI-464 (₹12,990 MRP) is the 4x6-inch coaxial from the same series, rated 60 W RMS and 180 W maximum. Because the MRP is the same, choose between the two coaxials by the opening in your car and the power you can supply, not by price.

Who should buy it, and who shouldn't

Buy the ZXI-654 if your car has round 6.5-inch openings with at least 60 mm of mounting depth behind the panel, and you have or plan an amplifier giving about 80 W RMS per channel.

Look elsewhere if you are working to a tighter budget, in which case the G6.5XI has a lower MRP, if your car takes 6x9-inch speakers, in which case see the DS18 G6.9XI, or if included grilles matter to you, since neither DS18 nor our listing says they come with the pair.

Installation notes for Indian cars

Door cavities vary from car to car, so check the window travel as well as the opening. Our guide to applying sound damping covers treating the door while the panel is off.

VA3 Car Studio in Ghaziabad offers professional installation, can build door baffles or speaker pods if the opening needs one, and does DSP tuning.

DS18 ZXI-654 price and where to buy

The DS18 ZXI-654 carries an MRP of ₹12,990 in our catalogue, for the pair. VA3 Car Studio often sells below MRP, so check the current offer on the ZXI-654 product page. The listing does not say what comes in the box.

DS18 ZXI-654 coaxial speakers - another view

The bottom line

The DS18 ZXI-654 is a 6.5-inch coaxial with a listed 80 W RMS rating, a 60 Hz high-pass and a cone and sensitivity that DS18 labels two ways. The feedback we could read is a handful of positive reviews on DS18's own shop. Buy it for 6.5-inch openings, match it to about 80 W RMS per channel, add a subwoofer and check the mounting depth before you order.

DS18 ZXI-654 FAQ

What is the RMS power of the DS18 ZXI-654?

DS18 rates the pair at 80 W RMS at 4 ohm, with 240 W as the maximum. The 180 W in DS18's web address matches neither figure, so size your amplifier against the RMS rating.

What cutout does the DS18 ZXI-654 need?

DS18 lists a 141 mm front-mount cutout and 60 mm of mounting depth. The speaker measures 165 mm across and 72 mm deep overall, so check the space behind your panel.

Is the DS18 ZXI-654 cone Kevlar or glass fibre?

DS18's heading, spec table and manual say glass fibre, while its overview says Kevlar. We cannot tell which is correct, so treat the cone material as unconfirmed.

Is the DS18 ZXI-654 sensitivity 89 dB or 87 dB?

DS18's spec table, manual and our listing give 89 dB, while its key-features list reads Pair ~ 87dB. DS18 does not explain the gap, so we show 89 dB and flag the other figure.
