Alpine HDZ-653 Review: The Status Three-Way Set With a Ring-Radiator Tweeter

Updated: Oct 6

The Alpine HDZ-653 is the standard three-way component set in Alpine's Status range: 170 mm carbon-composite woofers, 96 mm midranges and 70 mm ring-radiator tweeters, with crossovers that let you trim the midrange and tweeter and change the woofer slope. It's rated at 100 W RMS (300 W peak) with 88 dB sensitivity, and its Indian MRP of ₹1,14,999 makes it, with its slim-fit twin the HDZ-653S, the most expensive Status speaker set we sell. It's for owners who want the most complete Status front stage and have the space, and the installer, to place three drivers a side. Check today's offer on our Alpine HDZ-653 product page.

Alpine HDZ-653 Status 6.5-inch 3-way component speaker set

Key takeaways

  • Three drivers a side: a 170 mm woofer, a 96 mm midrange and a 70 mm ring-radiator tweeter with a 25 mm voice coil.

  • It shares its woofer, midrange and crossovers with the slim-fit HDZ-653S; on the published figures only the tweeter differs, and the price is the same.

  • Each crossover can pull the midrange down by up to 3 dB, move the tweeter 3 dB either way and switch the woofer between 6 and 12 dB/oct.

  • Two owners who fitted it in pickups recommend it and mention the price; we found no independent tests.

Why three drivers, and why a ring radiator

In a two-way set, the 6.5-inch woofer has to cover everything from midbass up through the vocal range before the tweeter takes over, and a door-mounted woofer is a poor place for voices to come from. The HDZ-653 hands that band to a dedicated 96 mm midrange that can sit up high, close to the tweeter, so singers appear at dashboard height rather than at your knees. The woofer is left to do what it's best at.

The tweeter is the same 70 mm ring radiator used in the two-way HDZ-65C, with a 25 mm voice coil and a neodymium magnet. A ring radiator uses an annular diaphragm around a fixed centre rather than a dome. The price of that design here is size: it needs a dash or pillar position with room for a 70 mm unit, where the slim-fit HDZ-653S uses a 40 mm tweeter (58 mm in its housing).

Crossover settings and amplification

The supplied crossovers give three adjustments. Midrange level is adjustable from 0 dB to −3 dB, which helps when the midranges sit close to your ears on the pillars. Tweeter level has +3, 0 and −3 dB positions for taming windscreen reflections or lifting an off-axis tweeter. The woofer slope switches between 6 and 12 dB/oct, changing how sharply the woofer gives way to the midrange.

Each passive crossover should take one amplifier channel, so the set should need two channels in total; Alpine doesn't mention bi-amping. With Alpine recommending up to 100 W RMS per channel, the Status HDA-F60 (100 W x 4 into 4 ohms) can power this set and a pair of rear speakers. For time alignment and detailed EQ, a processor such as the Status HDP-D90 sits in front of the amplifier.

What owners and reviewers say about the Alpine HDZ-653

When we checked in October 2026, the OnlineCarStereo listing carried two customer reviews of the HDZ-653, from February and April 2024, both from owners who fitted the set in Ford F-150 pickups. One called it a high-end speaker system; the other recommended it for amazing sound quality. Both mentioned the premium price.

The slim-fit sibling adds one more voice: a 2024 review on the OnlineCarStereo HDZ-653S page, covering the S version rather than this one, praised first-class build, high-end crossovers and the way the three-way layout spreads frequencies. Alpine's 2022 launch release is promotional. Three short reviews across two versions isn't a consensus, and none includes measurements.

Alpine HDZ-653 vs HDZ-653S, HDZ-65C and R2-S653

The HDZ-653S costs the same and, on the published figures, differs only in its slim-fit tweeter, so choose by tweeter location. The two-way HDZ-65C keeps the same woofer and ring-radiator tweeter, drops the midrange and costs ₹25,000 less; it's the better buy if you can't find a good spot for midranges.

The R-Series R2-S653 (₹55,999) is a three-way too, with die-cast baskets, the same 100 W RMS rating and midrange and tweeter levels adjustable by 3 dB either way. Its cones are glass fibre, its tweeter is a 43 mm magnesium hard dome, its response is quoted from 65 Hz, and its 88 dB sensitivity is measured at 1 W rather than 2.83 V. The HDZ-653 asks ₹59,000 more for carbon-composite cones, the ring-radiator tweeter and a lower quoted bass limit.

Who should buy it, and who shouldn't

Buy the HDZ-653 if you want the most complete Status front stage, can mount 96 mm midranges and 70 mm tweeters up high, and will give it amplifier power and a proper install.

Look elsewhere if your tweeter positions are small, where the HDZ-653S fits; if midranges are impractical in your car, where the HDZ-65C saves ₹25,000; or if you want a three-way layout on a tighter budget, where the R2-S653 costs about half as much.

Installation notes for Indian cars

This is a set to plan with your installer before ordering. Each side needs a woofer position with a 142 mm cut-out and 67 mm depth (often with an adapter ring), a midrange position with a 79 mm cut-out and 39 mm depth, and a tweeter position large enough for the 70 mm ring radiator. A-pillar pods that hold both midrange and tweeter are a common solution and keep the two drivers close together.

Damp the doors properly, since the woofer is still doing the midbass work; our sound damping guide explains how. Keep the crossovers away from moisture inside the door, and check window clearance with the glass fully down. Price and where to buy

Our Indian price list, effective 1 June 2026, puts the Alpine HDZ-653 at an MRP of ₹1,14,999. We frequently sell below that figure, and the HDZ-653 listing in our store shows today's price. The sets we supply are genuine Alpine stock.

Alpine HDZ-653 - another view

The bottom line

The HDZ-653 is Alpine's full Status speaker statement: a dedicated midrange, a ring-radiator tweeter, carbon-composite woofers and crossovers with three useful adjustments. It demands space, amplifier power and careful installation, and the owner feedback we found is brief. If your car can host it, it's a Status set that gives voices their own driver.

Alpine HDZ-653 FAQ

Is the Alpine HDZ-653 worth it over the HDZ-65C?

If you can place the 96 mm midranges high in the car, the HDZ-653 gives voices a dedicated driver for ₹25,000 more. If midrange positions would be compromised, the two-way HDZ-65C, with the same woofer and tweeter, is the better choice.

What is the difference between the HDZ-653 and the HDZ-653S?

On the published specifications they are the same set apart from the tweeter: the HDZ-653 has the full-size 70 mm ring radiator, while the HDZ-653S swaps in a slim-fit unit 40 mm across (58 mm in its housing) for factory or tight positions. The price matches too.

What amplifier suits the HDZ-653?

Two channels of a good amplifier should be enough, since each passive crossover normally takes a single channel and Alpine doesn't mention bi-amping. Alpine suggests up to 100 W RMS per channel, and the Status HDA-F60's 100 W x 4 into 4 ohms covers this set and a rear pair.
