Alpine HDZ-65C Review: The Standard Status Component Set and Its Ring-Radiator Tweeter

Updated: Oct 6

The Alpine HDZ-65C is the standard two-way component set in Alpine's Status range: two 170 mm carbon-composite woofers, two 70 mm ring-radiator tweeters with 25 mm voice coils, and adjustable passive crossovers, rated at 100 W RMS (300 W peak) with 88 dB sensitivity. Its Indian MRP is ₹89,999, the same as the slim-fit HDZ-65CS and ₹25,000 below the three-way HDZ-653. It suits buyers who want a Status front stage, have room to mount a full-size tweeter on the dash or A-pillar, and will run it from an amplifier. See today's offer on our Alpine HDZ-65C product page.

Alpine HDZ-65C Status 6.5-inch 2-way component speaker set

Key takeaways

  • A full-size 70 mm ring-radiator tweeter, the main difference from the slim-fit HDZ-65CS, which shares its woofer, power rating and crossover settings.

  • Each crossover lets you set the tweeter 3 dB up or down and pick a 6 or 12 dB/oct slope for the woofer.

  • Alpine recommends up to 100 W RMS per channel, which makes a four-channel amplifier the natural partner.

  • Two owner reviews on a US retailer's site praise the build and sound; one calls it pricey.

The ring-radiator tweeter

The tweeter is what sets the HDZ-65C apart. A ring radiator uses a doughnut-shaped diaphragm around a fixed centre piece instead of a conventional dome, a layout often chosen for extended, low-distortion treble. Alpine's version is 70 mm across with a 25 mm voice coil and a neodymium magnet, and Alpine lists an integrated waveguide on all its speakers.

The practical consequence is size. At 70 mm, this tweeter is unlikely to fit a small factory tweeter grille, so plan on a dash or A-pillar position, often with a custom pod. If your car only offers a small factory location, the slim-fit HDZ-65CS uses a 40 mm tweeter (58 mm with housing) with the same woofer and the same MRP.

Woofer, crossovers and power

The 170 mm woofer pairs a backed carbon-composite cone with a double-gathered surround and a die-cast aluminium basket, and it needs a 142 mm cut-out and 67 mm of depth. The crossovers let you set the tweeter at +3, 0 or −3 dB and switch the woofer between 6 and 12 dB/oct slopes. In a car, the tweeter level is the control you'll use most: drop it if the tweeters reflect brightly off the windscreen, raise it if they're aimed well off-axis.

With 88 dB sensitivity at 2.83 V, the set will play from a head unit, but Alpine recommends up to 100 W RMS per channel. The Status HDA-F60 four-channel, rated at 100 W x 4 into 4 ohms, is an exact match, and a processor such as the Status HDP-D90 adds time alignment and EQ for a tuner to work with. Add a subwoofer and high-pass the woofers around 80 Hz for the cleanest result.

What owners and reviewers say about the Alpine HDZ-65C

When we checked in October 2026, the OnlineCarStereo reviews page carried two customer reviews of the HDZ-65C, both from 2024. One owner liked the distinctive cone design and the build quality and said they couldn't get enough of the sound. The other described premium woofers and tweeters, crossovers that really deliver and a powerful component system, and found it a bit pricey for their taste but said that if you want the best sound, there's nothing wrong with choosing the 65C.

Two reviews make an encouraging start, not a consensus, and neither mentions the car or amplifier used. Alpine's 2022 launch release, which is promotional, lists the HDZ-65C with a ring-radiator tweeter. We found no independent measurements.

Alpine HDZ-65C vs HDZ-65CS, HDZ-653 and R2-S652

Against the slim-fit HDZ-65CS, on the published figures the choice comes down to the tweeter: same woofer, power rating, crossover settings and price. Choose the C if you have room for the 70 mm ring radiator, the CS if you need a small tweeter for a factory location.

The standard three-way HDZ-653 (₹1,14,999) adds a 96 mm midrange and keeps the ring-radiator tweeter, for ₹25,000 more; it needs a third mounting position for each side. The R-Series R2-S652 (₹36,999) shares the 100 W RMS rating and die-cast baskets, with glass-fibre cones, magnesium hard-dome tweeters and response quoted from 65 Hz. Its 88 dB figure is measured at 1 W rather than 2.83 V, so the sensitivities can't be compared directly.

Who should buy it, and who shouldn't

Buy the HDZ-65C if you want a Status component set with the full-size ring-radiator tweeter, can mount it on the dash or A-pillar, and will give the set amplifier power.

Look elsewhere if your car only has a small factory tweeter location, where the HDZ-65CS fits better; if you want a dedicated midrange, where the HDZ-653 adds one; or if budget matters most, where the R2-S652 shares the power rating for far less.

Installation notes for Indian cars

Many factory woofer openings need an adapter ring for the 142 mm cut-out; check window-glass clearance against the 67 mm depth with the glass fully down. Seal the woofer to the door and damp the outer skin while the panel is off; our sound damping guide explains the method.

For the tweeters, A-pillar pods aimed across the cabin usually give the best stereo image; a dash-top position is simpler but more prone to windscreen reflections. Mount the crossovers somewhere dry rather than inside the door, where monsoon water finds its way in. VA3 Car Studio in Ghaziabad offers professional installation; ask us to check fitment for your car.

Price and where to buy

In the Indian price list that took effect on 1 June 2026, the Alpine HDZ-65C carries an MRP of ₹89,999. Our selling price is often lower; the HDZ-65C page in our store has today's figure, and every set comes from genuine Alpine stock.

Alpine HDZ-65C - another view

The bottom line

The HDZ-65C is the full-fat Status two-way: a carbon-composite woofer in a die-cast basket, a 70 mm ring-radiator tweeter and crossovers with useful adjustments. It needs space for that tweeter and an amplifier to do it justice, and it costs far more than Alpine's R2 sets. Fitted well, it can give a Status system a proper front stage without stepping up to three-way complexity.

Alpine HDZ-65C FAQ

What tweeter does the Alpine HDZ-65C use?

A ring-radiator tweeter, 70 mm in diameter with a 25 mm voice coil and a neodymium magnet, according to Alpine UK. It's larger than the 40 mm slim-fit tweeter in the HDZ-65CS, so it suits dash or A-pillar mounting.

Should I choose the HDZ-65C or the HDZ-65CS?

They share the woofer, power rating, crossover settings and price. Choose the HDZ-65C if you can mount its 70 mm ring-radiator tweeter, and the HDZ-65CS if you need a small tweeter for a factory location.

Does the HDZ-65C need an amplifier?

Not to make a sound, but to get the most from it. Alpine's guidance is up to 100 W RMS per channel, and the Status HDA-F60 delivers 100 W x 4 into 4 ohms, enough for this set and a pair of rear speakers.
