JL Audio 13TW5v2-4 Review: 13.5-Inch Bass for the Tightest Installs
Updated: Oct 6
The JL Audio 13TW5v2-4 is the shallowest subwoofer driver in JL's 2026 Indian catalogue: a 13.5-inch woofer with a single 4-ohm, 7-inch voice coil, rated at 600 W RMS and needing just 67 mm (2.625 in) of mounting depth. It works in a sealed box of only 22.66 litres. At ₹1,59,990 MRP it is also the most expensive of JL's thin-line subs, aimed at pickup, SUV and custom installs where depth rules out everything else. Our 13TW5v2-4 product page has full details and the current offer.

In brief
A 67 mm mounting depth and a 22.66-litre sealed box put a 13.5-inch, 600 W cone into spaces too thin for any other JL sub.
JL's own sample box measures about 483 × 381 × 197 mm outside, and ported boxes are not recommended.
A single 4 Ω coil pairs neatly with 600 W-into-4 Ω amplifiers such as the JD1000/1.
Owners of the 4-ohm and 2-ohm versions praise tight bass and truck fitments; the only complaint is price, and we found no lab tests.

Specifications come from JL Audio's 13TW5v2 owner's manual and the 2026 Indian catalogue. The catalogue prints the depth as both 2⅝ in and 2.63 in, which are the same 67 mm, and one catalogue photo shows a 13TW5v2-2 label, but only the 4-ohm 13TW5v2-4 is listed and priced in India.
How JL fits a 13.5-inch sub into 67 mm
The key is what JL calls a concentric tube structure. It carries the 7-inch voice coil and the suspension attachments, which lets the large motor sit much further forward in the speaker than a conventional design allows. That is how the depth falls to 67 mm while the cone still has 11.0 mm of linear excursion, less than the TW3's 15.2 mm but on a larger cone.
The catalogue lists the supporting technologies by JL's own names: FCAM assembly for better alignment of the moving parts, a DMA-optimised motor for lower distortion and higher output, and an FEA-optimised suspension for lower distortion and better reliability. These are manufacturer claims rather than measured results, and we found no independent test of this driver.
JL's tab-ear frame keeps the footprint close to a 12-inch: the catalogue drawing shows the frame at 329 mm against 318 mm for the 12W3v3, a gap of 11.2 mm. The cutout is another matter. At 318 mm it is well over the 267–281 mm holes JL specifies for its conventional 12-inch drivers, so an existing 12-inch baffle would need recutting, and the 361 mm overall major diameter needs checking too.
A small sealed box, and only sealed
JL recommends 0.800 cu ft (22.66 litres) sealed, and the manual even gives a sample box of 19 × 15 × 7.75 in, about 483 × 381 × 197 mm outside. That is under 200 mm deep, so it can stand against a seatback or lie under a false floor while housing a 13.5-inch cone. JL's catalogue describes the requirement as far smaller than most 12-inch woofers need and only a bit larger than a typical small-box 10.
Ported boxes are out, since the manual marks them as not recommended. That suits the driver's purpose, because a port would add the volume and depth it exists to avoid, and sealed subs generally benefit from the natural bass boost of a closed car cabin.
Powering 600 W into 4 ohms
A single 4 Ω coil keeps wiring simple: one sub presents 4 Ω, and two wired in parallel present 2 Ω. JL's JD1000/1 is the natural partner for one sub, rated at 600 W into 4 Ω at 14.4 V, and the RD1000/1 carries the same 600 W rating into 4 Ω at a higher MRP. For a pair, either amplifier's 1000 W rating into 2 Ω gives 500 W per sub, a comfortable margin below each driver's 600 W.
The electrical system has to keep up. In Indian traffic with the AC running, voltage at the amplifier drops, and JL's own JD1000/1 rating falls from 600 W to 500 W into 4 Ω between 14.4 V and 12.5 V. Good cable, a solid ground and a healthy battery matter as much as the amplifier.
What owners say about the JL Audio 13TW5v2-4
When we checked in October 2026, the only owner feedback we could verify was on the retailer OnlineCarStereo, covering this model and its 2-ohm sibling. We found no independent measurements.
The two dated 13TW5v2-4 reviews on OnlineCarStereo, from March and April 2024, are positive. One owner reports exceptional performance with a JL amplifier, and the other is impressed by the sound from such a shallow, space-saving design. The single reservation is the premium price, which that reviewer still felt was justified. No star average was visible.
The 13TW5v2-2 reviews are for the 2-ohm version of the same driver, so they relate to a sibling rather than this exact model. The three dated reviews span 2013 to 2025. One owner reports outstanding output from two units in a custom box in a Toyota Tundra CrewMax, another fitted it behind the seat of a Ford F-250 Super Duty with no modifications and found it sounded excellent, and a third praises tight bass and premium build in a space-saving design. None records a complaint.
13TW5v2-4 against the 12TW3-D4 and 12W6v3-D4
The JL Audio 12TW3-D4 (₹59,990 MRP) is recommended for the same 0.80 cu ft sealed box and costs ₹1,00,000 less. It mounts 22 mm deeper at 89 mm, handles 400 W rather than 600 W, and is about 1.5 dB less sensitive at 84.11 dB. Where 89 mm is acceptable it is the value choice; the 13TW5v2 earns its premium when every millimetre counts or you want the extra power handling and cone area.
The conventional 12W6v3-D4 (₹1,24,990 MRP) shares the 600 W rating and is about as sensitive at 85.4 dB, but needs 191 mm of mounting depth and a 28.3-litre sealed box. The 13TW5v2-4 costs ₹35,000 more and saves 124 mm of depth and about 5.6 litres of box. Pickup owners should also see what the catalogue's vehicle-specific Toyota Hilux Stealthbox offers.
Who should pay the premium
It's worth it if depth is non-negotiable and you still want serious output: behind the rear seat of a double-cab pickup, under a false floor that has to stay flat, or anywhere 67 mm is the most you have. Owners of this model and its 2-ohm sibling consistently praise its sound, and two of the 2-ohm owners report truck installs, one behind the seat with no modifications.
It isn't if 89 mm will do, because the 12TW3-D4 uses the same box for well under half the price, or if you want a ported box, which JL rules out. With two reviews of the 4-ohm model and no lab data, you are also relying more on JL's reputation than on independent evidence.
Installing it in Indian pickups and SUVs
Follow JL's sample box, or keep its 22.66 litres net when reshaping it, remembering that the driver displaces 1.47 litres of its own. Cut the 318 mm hole accurately, and leave room in front of the cone for its excursion and any grille.
Behind-seat boxes in double-cab pickups sit inside the cabin, so seal every joint against rattles, carpet the box to match the interior and route the power cable clear of seat mechanisms. A parked cabin heats up fast in May, so mount the amplifier where air can circulate rather than sealing it in beside the sub. 13TW5v2-4 price and where to buy
The JL Audio 13TW5v2-4 carries an MRP of ₹1,59,990 in the 2026 Indian price list, between the 12W6v3-D4 and the 12W7AE among JL's subwoofer drivers. We often sell below MRP, so see the 13TW5v2-4 store page for today's price. It is a genuine JL Audio driver, badged in the catalogue as built in USA with global components.

Final word
The 13TW5v2-4 is JL's answer to the hardest installs: a 13.5-inch, 600 W sub that mounts in 67 mm and lives in a sealed box under 200 mm deep. Owners back it up, though the evidence is thin and the price is steep. If 89 mm fits, the 12TW3-D4 is the smarter buy; if it doesn't, nothing shallower exists in JL's 2026 Indian range.
JL Audio 13TW5v2-4 FAQ
How thin is the JL Audio 13TW5v2-4?
Its mounting depth is 67 mm (2.625 in), which the catalogue prints as both 2⅝ and 2.63 inches. JL's sample sealed box for it is 197 mm (7.75 in) deep on the outside.
Can the 13TW5v2-4 go in a ported box?
No. JL's manual lists ported enclosures as not recommended, and the driver is designed for small sealed boxes, with 22.66 litres (0.800 cu ft) recommended.
Will it fit in my existing 12-inch box?
Probably not without work. The tab-ear frame's footprint is close to a 12-inch, but the 318 mm cutout is larger than the 267–281 mm holes of JL's conventional 12s, and an existing box may also be the wrong volume for its 22.66-litre recommendation.
