JL Audio FiX 86 Review: Keep the Factory Touchscreen, Fix the Signal

Oct 2
6 min read

Updated: Oct 6

The JL Audio FiX 86 is an OEM integration processor: it takes up to eight speaker-level or line-level channels from a factory head unit, corrects their timing, matches their levels and sums split signals back into clean front, rear and subwoofer outputs for aftermarket amplifiers. Calibration is a single button press that takes about 30 seconds, and the factory fader keeps working afterwards. Its 2026 Indian MRP is ₹69,990, between JL's ₹15,990 LoC22 converter and the ₹79,990 TwK88 tuning DSP. It suits modern cars whose factory touchscreen can't sensibly be replaced. Details and today's price are on our JL Audio FiX 86 OEM integration DSP page.

Key takeaways

  • Eight inputs accept speaker-level signals up to 30 V RMS, or line level, so it connects straight to factory outputs.

  • Automatic delay correction, level matching and summing undo the processing that many factory systems apply.

  • Six RCA outputs give front, rear and subwoofer pairs, with fader retention.

  • It is an integration tool, not a full tuning DSP: JL lists EQ but no crossover filters or time alignment for your new speakers.

Figures come from JL Audio's official FiX 86 page on Garmin Hong Kong's site, our store listing and the 2026 Indian catalogue. JL's page lists both EQ descriptions shown above, and we have reproduced them as printed. The box contains the processor, four 4-pin Euroblock connectors and one 5-pin Euroblock connector.

What fixing a factory signal actually means

A basic factory head unit sends each speaker roughly the same full-range signal. Many modern systems don't. A car sold with a branded premium system often splits frequencies inside the head unit or a factory amplifier, so the tweeter, door woofer and factory subwoofer each receive only their slice. It may also equalise those slices to suit the factory speakers, and delay some of them to suit the factory layout. Connect a new amplifier to one of those outputs and you inherit a signal that was never meant to be heard on its own.

The FiX 86 reverses that. JL's catalogue describes delay correction as the feature that makes FiX unique, because it ensures the factory signals are summed and equalised correctly. The order matters: if two outputs carrying neighbouring frequency bands are added together while one is still delayed, they partly cancel around the point where they overlap. Correcting the timing first, matching levels and then summing gives your amplifiers a coherent full-range signal to work with.

Outputs, fader retention and EQ

On the output side you get three RCA pairs: front, rear and subwoofer. The catalogue highlights fader retention, which means the touchscreen's front-to-rear fader still works after installation, and our listing confirms the dedicated subwoofer output. That matches the usual upgrade layout of four door speakers plus a subwoofer in the boot.

For tone shaping, JL lists user-adjustable 10-band graphic equalisers, alongside a 30-band, 1/3-octave EQ on two channels. What JL doesn't list for this model are crossover filters or time alignment for the new system. For an active front stage with time alignment, pair the FiX 86 with a DSP amplifier such as the VX600/6i, or a tuning processor such as the TwK88. Our guides on why cars need DSP and how DSP set-up works explain the difference between integration and tuning.

Where the FiX 86 fits in an Indian car

Replacing the head unit is rarely sensible in a current Indian car. The touchscreen runs the reversing camera, phone projection and, in many models, climate and vehicle settings. The FiX 86 lets that screen stay while everything after it changes. Its eight inputs cover a front three-way factory layout plus rear speakers, and because they accept up to 30 V RMS, it can be connected after a factory amplifier as well as a head unit.

After the FiX, the outputs can feed conventional amplifiers: a four-channel such as the XDM400/4 or HD600/4 for the doors, and a monoblock for the subwoofer. If you would like a wired remote, the catalogue lists the DRC-205 remote as compatible with all FiX models.

What owners and reviewers say about the JL Audio FiX 86

Owner feedback is scarce. When we checked in October 2026, the only reviews we could read were two short ones on OnlineCarStereo, dated April 2024 and June 2025, with no overall score shown. Between them, they say it improves a factory system's sound and is compact for the processing it offers; a first-time DSP user found it user-friendly. The one complaint is that it felt expensive for the improvement it delivered.

OnlineCarStereo removes negative comments it considers unproven or biased, and two reviews are far too few for firm conclusions. Beyond that, the verifiable material is JL's own: its family page says FiX is engineered for high-quality sound from factory systems without replacing the head unit, which is a manufacturer claim rather than an independent verdict. If you have installed a FiX 86, we would like to hear how it went.

FiX 86 vs LoC22 and TwK88

The LoC22 costs less than a quarter as much, but it simply converts two channels of speaker-level signal to line level. It is the right choice when the factory outputs are clean and full-range; it cannot undo splitting, equalisation or delay. The TwK88 costs ₹10,000 more than the FiX 86 at MRP and offers eight channels of crossovers and 80 EQ bands, but its inputs are line level only, so it cannot connect directly to factory speaker outputs.

In short, the LoC22 adapts a signal, the FiX 86 repairs it, and the TwK88 or a VXi amplifier tunes the result. A heavily processed premium system needs the repair step before anything else.

Who should buy it, and who shouldn't

Buy the FiX 86 if your car has a factory system that splits, equalises or delays its outputs, you want to keep the touchscreen, and you plan to add aftermarket amplifiers, speakers or a subwoofer.

Look elsewhere if your factory outputs are already clean and full-range, where the LoC22 or an amplifier's own speaker-level inputs will do, or if you are replacing the head unit anyway. Buyers who want full active tuning should budget for a tuning processor or DSP amplifier as well.

Installation notes for Indian cars

In cars with a factory amplifier, the cleanest connection point is usually at that amplifier's outputs, often under a seat or behind boot trim; elsewhere it is behind the head unit. Use vehicle-specific harness adaptors where they exist so the factory wiring stays intact. Secure the Euroblock connectors with strain relief, because rough roads loosen anything that can move, and mount the processor away from heater ducts and boot-floor moisture.

Calibration takes about 30 seconds, but allow time to confirm that every factory channel is connected before you press the button. Fuse the power feed at 1 A, use a solid ground, and remember the 10 V lower operating limit on cars with tired batteries. VA3 Car Studio offers professional installation in Ghaziabad.

JL Audio FiX 86 - another view

The bottom line

The FiX 86 solves the hardest problem in a modern Indian car upgrade: getting a clean, full-range signal out of a factory system that was never designed to provide one. It is not a tuning processor and it is not cheap, and owner feedback is too thin to lean on. For cars with processed factory audio, though, it is the right first box in the chain.

JL Audio FiX 86 FAQ

Does the JL Audio FiX 86 keep my factory touchscreen working?

Yes. It is designed to work with the factory source unit rather than replace it. The touchscreen keeps its normal functions, and the catalogue highlights that the factory fader keeps working after installation.

Does the FiX 86 have time alignment?

JL lists automatic delay correction for the factory signals, which is different from time alignment for your new speakers. For that, add a DSP amplifier such as the VX600/6i or a tuning processor such as the TwK88.

Do I need the FiX 86 or the LoC22?

If your factory outputs are clean and full-range, the LoC22 is enough. If the factory system splits, equalises or delays its outputs, as many premium systems do, you need the FiX 86 to correct and sum them first.
