JL Audio LoC22 Review: Adding an Amplifier to a Factory Head Unit
Updated: Oct 6
The JL Audio LoC22 is a fully active two-channel line output converter: it takes speaker-level signals from a factory head unit, up to 40 V RMS per channel, and turns them into clean RCA outputs of up to 8 V RMS for an aftermarket amplifier or processor. It also switches that amplifier on automatically, so no remote wire is needed from the head unit. Its 2026 Indian MRP is ₹15,990, a fraction of the ₹69,990 FiX 86 and ₹79,990 TwK88 that share the Evolution DSP section of JL's catalogue. It suits owners who want to keep the factory touchscreen and add an amplifier, whether for a subwoofer or better door speakers. Full specifications and our price are on the JL Audio LoC22 line output converter page.

Key takeaways
It converts one stereo pair of speaker-level signal to line level, with a −27.3 to +3.2 dB gain range and a clip LED for setting it.
Auto turn-on works by signal sensing or DC offset, so a factory touchscreen without a remote output can still wake an amplifier.
A dual-range input load selector (20 kΩ or 20 Ω) helps with factory units that expect to see a load on their outputs.
It converts the signal but doesn't correct it. Factory outputs that are equalised, split by frequency or delayed need the FiX 86 instead.

Speaker level in, line level out: what that buys you
A factory head unit's built-in amplifier produces a speaker-level signal, several volts strong and meant to drive a speaker directly. Aftermarket amplifiers are designed around line-level RCA signals, so something has to scale and clean up that signal in between. A passive converter does it with resistors or a small transformer. The LoC22 is fully active, with its own regulated power supply, so the output it hands the amplifier is buffered and adjustable rather than simply divided down.
Its differential-balanced input reads the difference between the positive and negative speaker wires. That rejects much of the noise picked up on the way and suits the bridged outputs found in most factory head units. The 8 V RMS ceiling is generous, too: a strong signal into the amplifier lets the amplifier's gain sit lower, which usually means less hiss in a quiet cabin. The 3 Hz to 32 kHz response and 0.01% distortion figure mean the converter itself shouldn't be the weak link.
Working with factory touchscreens
Many factory head units have no remote turn-on lead, which is often the first problem in an integration. The LoC22 watches the speaker signal instead. In DC offset mode it detects the steady voltage that some bridged factory outputs carry whenever the head unit is on; in signal mode it wakes on audio. A slide switch on the end panel picks the mode, and JL says the converter then turns on aftermarket amplifiers or processors through a dedicated 12 V switched connection.
The input load selector matters more than it looks. Some factory systems check for a connected speaker, or misbehave when they see almost no load, and the 20 Ω Low Z setting is there for them; the 20 kΩ normal setting suits everything else. Finally, the clip LED takes the guesswork out of gain setting: turn the head unit up to the highest volume you actually use and set the LoC22's level just below the point where the LED lights.
LoC22, built-in amplifier inputs or the FiX 86?
Before buying one, check your amplifier. Several JL amplifiers accept speaker-level signals directly, including the JD400/4 four-channel and the JD500/1 subwoofer amplifier. If one of those is your only amplifier, its own inputs may do the job and the LoC22 becomes optional.
The converter earns its place when the next box in the chain only takes line level. The TwK88 tuning DSP is a good example: its inputs are specified for line-level signals of 250 mV to 7.1 V RMS. It also helps when one signal must feed more than one amplifier, or when you want the turn-on and load handling sorted in one small box behind the dash, with RCA cables running back to an amplifier such as the XDM400/4.
What it can't do is repair a processed signal. Many premium factory systems equalise their outputs, split frequencies between tweeters, doors and a factory subwoofer, or add delays. The LoC22 passes all of that straight through, and it handles only two channels. The FiX 86 takes eight inputs, corrects delay, sums split signals and provides front, rear and subwoofer outputs, at more than four times the MRP. Our guide on whether your car needs an amplifier is a good starting point if you're still deciding.
What owners and reviewers say about the JL Audio LoC22
Independent feedback is thin. When we checked in October 2026, the only reviews we could actually read were three buyer reviews on OnlineCarStereo, dated March 2024 to June 2025, with no overall score shown. They describe a very small unit that still delivers solid bass once an amplifier and subwoofer are added, an easy installation and setup, and a clear improvement in their systems' sound.
None of the three raises a complaint, but OnlineCarStereo says it removes negative comments it considers unproven or biased, so treat this as a small, favourable sample. Crutchfield and Sonic Electronix both host LoC-22 review pages, but their contents didn't load during our research, and there is a YouTube unboxing video we haven't drawn on. If you've fitted one, we'd like to hear how it went.
Who should buy it, and who shouldn't
Buy the LoC22 if you're keeping the factory touchscreen, your amplifier or processor needs a line-level input, and the head unit's outputs are reasonably clean and full-range. It's also the tidy choice when you want reliable automatic turn-on without hunting for an ignition-switched wire.
Look elsewhere if your car has a branded premium system with its own processing, if you need more than one stereo pair, or if your only amplifier already accepts speaker-level signals. In the first two cases the FiX 86 is the right tool; in the last, the money is better spent on speakers or sound damping.
Installation notes for Indian cars
Take the signal from the front speaker outputs behind the head unit, ideally through a vehicle-specific harness adaptor rather than by cutting factory wires; that keeps warranty conversations and future removal simple. Mount the converter behind the glovebox or dash, away from heater ducts, and run shielded RCA cables to the amplifier along the opposite side of the car from the power cable.
Fuse the power feed with the specified 1 A fast-acting fuse and ground it to clean bare metal. The 9–16 V operating range leaves margin for voltage sag at idle with the AC running, and standby draw under 1.6 mA means a car that sits for a week won't come back to a flat battery because of it. One caution: if the factory unit filters bass out of the door outputs, a subwoofer fed from them will sound thin. Price and where to buy
The JL Audio LoC22 has an MRP of ₹15,990 in the 2026 Indian catalogue. We often sell below MRP, so see today's figure on the LoC22 product page. Every unit we sell is a genuine JL Audio product.

The bottom line
The LoC22 is a well-specified, honest converter: active and differential, with generous input and output headroom, two turn-on modes and a load option for fussy factory units. For a factory touchscreen with clean outputs and an amplifier that needs line level, it's the simplest JL solution. Where the factory signal is processed, save up for the FiX 86 instead.
JL Audio LoC22 FAQ
Do I need the JL Audio LoC22 if my amplifier has speaker-level inputs?
Often not. JL's JD amplifiers, for example, accept speaker-level signals directly. The LoC22 earns its place when the amplifier or processor only takes line level, when one signal feeds several amplifiers, or when the factory unit needs a load.
Will the LoC22 work with a factory touchscreen head unit?
Yes, that is its main job. It accepts up to 40 V RMS per channel, senses the head unit switching on by signal or DC offset, and offers a low-impedance load setting. If the touchscreen's outputs are equalised or split by frequency, the FiX 86 is the better choice.
Can the LoC22 feed a subwoofer amplifier?
Yes. Its two RCA outputs can feed a subwoofer amplifier as easily as a four-channel one. The catch is the source: if the factory unit removes bass from the outputs you tap, the subwoofer will have little to play.
