Alpine SPJ-161C2 Review: A Budget Swap for Factory Head Units

Updated: Oct 6

The Alpine SPJ-161C2 is a 6-inch (16 cm) two-way coaxial speaker from Alpine's entry-level Type-J range, rated at 50 W RMS (250 W peak) with a polypropylene woofer, a silk-dome tweeter and a mounting depth of just 44 mm. With an India MRP of ₹4,499 it is the most affordable Alpine speaker in our range, sitting below the 6x9 SPJ-691C3 and the DM-65. It suits one job: replacing tired factory door speakers on factory head-unit power, and Alpine says no spacer is required. Check today's price on our Alpine SPJ-161C2 product page.

Alpine SPJ-161C2 6-inch two-way coaxial car speaker

Key points

  • A 44 mm mounting depth and 123.5 mm mounting diameter, and Alpine says no spacer is required.

  • Polypropylene cone with a rubber roll surround, both materials that handle heat and humidity well.

  • Alpine doesn't publish sensitivity or impedance, so loudness on head-unit power can't be predicted from the spec sheet.

  • The 250 W peak figure is five times the 50 W RMS rating; the RMS number is the one to plan around.

Fitting it in factory openings

Most of the work in a basic speaker upgrade is mechanical, and this is where the SPJ-161C2 is strongest on paper. At 44 mm, it is shallow enough that window glass is unlikely to be a problem, and Alpine says no spacer is required. The 123.5 mm mounting diameter is the number to check against your car's factory speaker or bracket.

Factory speakers are often fixed to plastic brackets or have their own oddly shaped baskets, so an adapter bracket is common even when the size is right. The other adapter worth having is a wiring harness that plugs into the factory speaker connector, so nothing in the car's loom has to be cut. Both are cheap, and both make the upgrade reversible if you sell the car.

Alpine claims replacing factory speakers in any make of vehicle is easy with Type-J. That is a marketing line: openings, brackets and connectors vary, so we check your car before you order.

Living with factory head-unit power

Many buyers of a ₹4,499 speaker will keep the factory head unit, and the SPJ-161C2 is pitched that way. Alpine describes the range as high efficiency, but without a sensitivity figure we can't say how loud it will play compared with the speaker it replaces. What we can say is that a head unit's built-in amplifier makes far less continuous power than the 50 W RMS this speaker can handle, so the risk isn't overpowering it.

The real risk is clipping. Turned right up, a small built-in amplifier distorts, and that harsh signal is hard on tweeters. Keep the factory equaliser and bass boost moderate, and back off when the sound hardens. If you later want more volume, Alpine says the Type-J range is compatible with its entry-level two- and four-channel amplifiers; the BBX-F1200 is rated at 50 W RMS × 4 into 4 Ω, in line with the rating of four of these speakers. Alpine doesn't list their impedance, so we confirm it before wiring.

What the money buys

The polypropylene cone and rubber roll surround are sensible for Indian conditions: polypropylene doesn't soak up humidity, and rubber surrounds generally outlast foam in a hot, closed door. The silk-dome tweeter uses a neodymium magnet, which keeps it compact enough to sit in the middle of the woofer.

Alpine's headline figure is a 30 Hz to 30 kHz response, which it says beats earlier Type-J models and competing speakers. No tolerance is given, so read that as promotion rather than evidence of real 30 Hz bass from a 6-inch cone.

What owners and reviewers say about the Alpine SPJ-161C2

When we checked in October 2026, we couldn't find published owner reviews or independent tests of the SPJ-161C2 that we could verify. The manufacturer pages, Alpine India and Alpine Asia, carry no reviews, only Alpine's own description of an affordable route to better sound than factory speakers.

So treat everything beyond the published specifications as Alpine's claims. If you've fitted a pair, especially on a factory touchscreen head unit, let us know how they compare with what came out of the doors.

SPJ-161C2 vs SPJ-161CS and DM-65

The SPJ-161CS (₹6,699 MRP) is the component version: separate surface-mount tweeters, PEI woofer cones instead of polypropylene, and the same 50 W RMS rating, 44 mm depth and 123.5 mm mounting diameter. It costs more and takes more fitting, but moving the tweeters up to the dash improves the stereo image.

The DM-65 (₹8,499 MRP) is a 6.5-inch coaxial with a published 92 dB sensitivity, a 65 Hz to 20 kHz response and an H.A.M.R. surround. It costs nearly twice as much, and the published sensitivity figure makes head-unit performance easier to predict. For the rear deck, the SPJ-691C3 6x9 completes a Type-J system.

Who should buy it, and who shouldn't

Buy the SPJ-161C2 if a factory speaker has failed or sounds tired, you're keeping the factory head unit, and you want a genuine Alpine replacement for the least money. It's also a tidy choice for rear doors in a front-focused system.

Look elsewhere if you want the biggest possible improvement or plan to add an amplifier soon. A set with a published sensitivity, such as the DM-65, or a component set gives you more to plan around.

Installation notes for Indian cars

Even a cheap speaker benefits from a solid door. Seal the plastic sheet behind the trim, add damping to the outer skin around the speaker, and use a foam ring so the woofer doesn't rattle against the panel; our sound damping guide covers the materials. Check polarity when connecting, because a reversed speaker cancels bass from its partner.

Fit the harness adapters rather than cutting factory plugs, and test each speaker before refitting the trim. Our guide to the best car speakers under ₹10,000 covers the wider budget market. VA3 Car Studio offers professional installation in Ghaziabad.

Price and where to buy

The Alpine SPJ-161C2 has an India MRP of ₹4,499 (w.e.f. 1 June 2026). See today's offer and stock on our SPJ-161C2 product page. Every pair we sell is a genuine Alpine product.

The bottom line

The SPJ-161C2 is an honest budget replacement: shallow, said by Alpine to need no spacer, built with a cone and surround that cope well with heat and humidity, and rated well beyond what a head unit can deliver. What's missing is information, with no published sensitivity or impedance and no owner feedback we could verify. If the goal is a cheap, reversible swap of factory speakers, it fits the brief; if you want a bigger step, spend more.

Alpine SPJ-161C2 FAQ

Will the Alpine SPJ-161C2 work with my factory head unit?

Yes. It's designed as a factory speaker upgrade, and its 50 W RMS rating is well above what a head unit's built-in amplifier delivers. Alpine doesn't publish sensitivity, so we can't predict loudness, but keep the volume below the point where the sound turns harsh.

Do I need spacers or adapters for the SPJ-161C2?

Alpine says no spacer is required thanks to the 44 mm depth. Many cars still need an adapter bracket to match the 123.5 mm mounting diameter, and a plug-in wiring harness avoids cutting factory connectors. We confirm both for your car.

Is the SPJ-161C2 a 6-inch or 6.5-inch speaker?

Alpine lists it as a 6-inch (16 cm) speaker with a 123.5 mm woofer mounting diameter. Size labels vary between car makers, so compare that figure with your factory speaker or ask us to check.
