Alpine R2-S65 Review: The R2 Coaxial for Factory 6.5-Inch Doors
Updated: Oct 6
The Alpine R2-S65 is a 6.5-inch (16.5 cm) two-way coaxial from Alpine's R2 line, the next generation of its R-Series, with a 25 mm hard-dome tweeter mounted in a glass-fibre reinforced cone and a rating of 100 W RMS (300 W peak) into 4 Ω. Its Indian MRP is ₹24,999, which puts it in the middle of the Alpine 6.5-inch coaxials we sell: well above the S2-S65 and well below the Status-series HDZ-65. It is aimed at drivers who want a one-piece upgrade in the factory door location, with no separate tweeters to mount, and who may add an amplifier later. Current pricing is on our R2-S65 product page.

Key takeaways
A one-piece upgrade: the tweeter and crossover are built in, so it goes into a 6.5-inch door location, with an adapter ring if the factory mounting needs one.
Rated 100 W RMS with 88 dB sensitivity, it is fine on a head unit and at its best with a modest amplifier.
Alpine UK lists a 63 mm mounting depth and a 135 mm cutout.
19 Best Buy reviews average 4.7 out of 5, though all carry an incentive label and the one 1-star review is about a wrong item being shipped.

What's inside the R2-S65
Alpine's US pages describe the whole R2 speaker line in the same promotional terms: a larger ferrite motor in place of the neodymium used before, which Alpine credits with more midbass, and its HAMR surround for longer, linear cone travel. Alpine UK's sheet for this model adds the practical details: a glass-fibre reinforced cone, a composite basket, an integrated crossover and grilles in the box.
That is a sensible recipe for Indian doors. A stiff glass-fibre cone copes with humidity better than paper, and a composite basket won't rust in a door that collects water during the monsoon. The response is quoted to 40 kHz, which qualifies it for Hi-Res badging. Nobody hears above 20 kHz, so treat that figure as a sign of a light, extended tweeter rather than a feature in itself.
Head-unit power versus an amplifier
At 88 dB the R2-S65 is average in sensitivity, so a head unit will drive it to comfortable levels but not much further. Several Best Buy owners still describe a big step up from stock speakers, and one OnlineCarStereo reviewer recommends pairing it with an Alpine amplifier.
That advice fits the 100 W RMS rating. Alpine's R2-A60F delivers 100 W RMS per channel into 4 Ω according to our listing, enough to run front and rear pairs at their rated power. The S2-A36F, with four 60 W RMS channels, is a lower-priced option, and the S2-A55V adds a 200 W RMS subwoofer channel to four 40 W RMS channels if you want one box for a complete system. Set the gain with a test tone, and high-pass the doors around 80 Hz when a subwoofer handles the low end.
Coaxial or the R2-S65C component set?
The R2-S65C (₹32,999) shares this speaker's Alpine UK ratings: 100 W RMS, 88 dB, 65 Hz – 40 kHz, a 63 mm depth and a 135 mm cutout. The extra ₹8,000 buys separate tweeters that can be flush-mounted or sit on the dash, plus in-line networks with a three-step tweeter level. Raising the tweeters towards ear height is what lifts the soundstage off the floor, so if imaging matters and your car has room for tweeters, the component set is worth stretching for. For an invisible, one-piece swap, the R2-S65 is simpler.
What owners and reviewers say about the Alpine R2-S65
All the feedback we found comes from US retailers. This is the picture when we checked in October 2026.
Best Buy shows 19 reviews averaging 4.7 out of 5: 17 five-star, one four-star and one one-star. Owners describe a large improvement over factory speakers in a range of vehicles, including one replacing factory Harman Kardon speakers. They mention quick installs (one of about 15 minutes, another about 30 minutes per speaker), deep bass for the size and noticeably heavier magnets than the speakers they replaced, and one runs four of them from a four-channel amplifier. The one-star review is about being shipped the wrong model and a dispute with customer service before a refund, not the sound. Every review carries Best Buy's label saying the reviewer received promo considerations or a sweepstakes entry, and two reviewers are Best Buy employees.
Five reviews on OnlineCarStereo, dated March 2024 to September 2025, praise clean, crisp sound, solid build, and strong bass with good mids and treble. The recurring reservation is price: two reviewers note they aren't cheap, though both recommend them. OnlineCarStereo moderates reviews, so read it as a favourable sample. We found no independent lab test. If you have fitted a pair in an Indian car, we'd welcome your notes.
R2-S65 vs S2-S65 and other Alpine coaxials
The S2-S65 costs ₹11,000 less at MRP (₹13,999), and Alpine UK's figures make the choice less obvious than the price gap. The S2-S65 has the same 88 dB sensitivity, a deeper quoted response to 55 Hz, a HAMR surround of its own and a Hi-Res tweeter. The R2-S65 leads on power handling, 100 W RMS and 300 W peak against 80 W and 240 W. On head-unit power the S2-S65 is the cheaper way to the same sensitivity; with an amplifier, the R2-S65's headroom starts to count.
Further up, the HDZ-65 is Alpine's Status-series coaxial at ₹59,999, while the BRV-S65 is another 6.5-inch two-way coaxial close to this price, at ₹27,999. If your car takes 6x9s, the R2-S69 carries the same Alpine UK ratings with more cone area.
Who should buy it, and who shouldn't
Buy the R2-S65 if you want a tidy, one-piece upgrade for factory 6.5-inch door locations, you plan to add a four-channel amplifier, and you value the 100 W RMS headroom more than the last few hertz of quoted bass.
Look elsewhere if your speakers will stay on head-unit power, where the S2-S65 matches its sensitivity for much less, or if you want a raised soundstage, which the R2-S65C component set does better.
Installation notes for Indian cars
Check the opening against Alpine's 135 mm cutout, and make sure there is 63 mm of clear depth behind the mounting surface with the window fully down. Many factory doors need a spacer or adapter ring, which also lets you seal the speaker properly to the door. Treat the outer door skin and close large holes in the inner panel while the trim is off; our damping guide covers the method, which helps midbass and cuts rattles.
If your car has separate factory tweeters wired to the same door channel, plan for them. Leaving them connected alongside a coaxial's built-in tweeter doubles up the treble and lowers the load the amplifier sees. Keep connections clear of the wet zone inside the door. Price and where to buy
The R2-S65 carries an MRP of ₹24,999 in our current Indian price list. We often sell below MRP, so check the current offer on the R2-S65 product page. Every pair we sell is a genuine Alpine product.
The bottom line
The R2-S65 is a straightforward, well-reviewed coaxial: glass-fibre cone, built-in hard-dome tweeter, a 100 W RMS rating and sensible mounting dimensions. Its published numbers beat the cheaper S2-S65 only on power handling, so it makes most sense with an amplifier, and several owners mention running it with one.
Alpine R2-S65 FAQ
Does the Alpine R2-S65 need an amplifier?
No, but it benefits from one. With 88 dB sensitivity a head unit will drive it to comfortable levels, while its 100 W RMS rating leaves plenty of headroom for a four-channel amplifier such as the R2-A60F.
Will the R2-S65 fit my car's factory 6.5-inch openings?
Alpine lists a 135 mm cutout and a 63 mm mounting depth. Many cars need an adapter ring, so measure the opening and the depth with the window down, or ask us to check fitment for your car.
What is the difference between the R2-S65 and the R2-S65C?
The R2-S65 is a coaxial with the tweeter built into the woofer. The R2-S65C is a component set with separate tweeters and in-line networks with tweeter level adjustment, so the tweeters can be mounted higher for a better soundstage.
