Alpine S2-S65 Review: A Hi-Res 6.5-Inch Coaxial for Replacing Factory Speakers

Updated: Oct 6

The Alpine S2-S65 is a 6.5-inch (16.5 cm) two-way coaxial speaker from Alpine's next-generation S-Series, rated at 80 W RMS and 240 W peak into 4 Ω, with 88 dB sensitivity, a 25 mm tweeter and Hi-Res Audio certification up to 40 kHz. Its Indian MRP is ₹13,999, well below the ₹24,999 R-Series R2-S65, which makes it the S-Series entry point for the popular 6.5-inch size. It suits buyers replacing factory 6.5-inch speakers who want a straightforward drop-in upgrade now and the option of a modest amplifier later. You can see the set and today's price on our S2-S65 product page.

Alpine S2-S65 S-Series Hi-Res 6.5-inch two-way coaxial speakers

Key takeaways

  • A drop-in coaxial: woofer and 25 mm tweeter in one unit, so it replaces a factory 6.5-inch speaker without extra tweeter mounting.

  • 88 dB sensitivity and an 80 W RMS rating suit head-unit power today and a four-channel amplifier such as the S2-A36F later.

  • Alpine UK lists a 128.8 mm cutout, 57.7 mm mounting depth and 19.3 mm mounting height; check all three before ordering.

  • Owner feedback is plentiful for this class, with 44 Best Buy reviews averaging 4.6, though 19 of the 20 we could read are incentivised.

Figures come from Alpine UK's S2-S65 page and Alpine India's S2-S65 page. Our listing's 70 Hz follows Alpine India, while Alpine UK quotes 55 Hz. Alpine doesn't name the tweeter material; OnlineCarStereo's S2-S65 spec sheet lists a 1-inch cloth dome, which is the retailer's data rather than Alpine's.

What's inside, and what Hi-Res means here

The cone mixes polypropylene with glass fibre and mica. Alpine says the blend keeps it light while giving high output and low distortion, and credits larger magnets for the generation's performance; those are Alpine's claims, not measurements. The practical upside of polypropylene is that it doesn't absorb moisture like paper, which helps in a door that gets damp every monsoon and bakes in May.

The cone hangs on Alpine's HAMR (High-Amplitude Multi-Roll) surround, which Alpine says allows maximum cone movement. The Hi-Res Audio badge rests on the tweeter reaching 40 kHz. That is well beyond hearing, so treat it as a sign of extension rather than audible magic. If the retailer's cloth-dome listing is right, that points to a smoother rather than sharper top end, since soft domes are generally voiced that way, though the in-car result depends heavily on where the speaker sits.

Head unit or amplifier?

At 88 dB, the S2-S65 is middle-of-the-road for sensitivity, so it will run from a head unit at everyday volumes. That matters in India, where many buyers keep the factory touchscreen. But a head unit's amplifier clips long before it delivers anything like the 80 W RMS rating, and clipping is what kills tweeters, so an amplifier is the real upgrade.

The natural match is Alpine's S2-A36F, rated at 60 W RMS per channel into 4 Ω, inside the speaker's rating, with a speaker-level input for factory head units via an optional cable. The R2-A60F's 100 W RMS per channel is more than the S2-S65 is rated for, so it only makes sense with conservative gain settings. Our guide on whether you need an amplifier explains the trade-offs.

What owners and reviewers say about the Alpine S2-S65

All the feedback we found comes from US retailers. This is what we found when we checked in October 2026.

On Best Buy, 44 reviews average 4.6 out of 5: 38 five-star, two four-star, one two-star and three one-star, with 89% recommending them. The common praise is clarity, crisp highs, punchy bass and balanced sound without distortion, plus easy installation. One reviewer felt they lacked a little of the punch expected from Alpine, and one of the one-star reviews blames Best Buy's installer for damaging the speaker rather than the speaker itself. The big caveat: 19 of the 20 reviews we could see carry Best Buy's label that the reviewer received promo considerations or a sweepstakes entry for writing it.

OnlineCarStereo shows five reviews from December 2023 to July 2025. Owners describe loud, clear, crisp sound, noticeable bass, a big step up from factory speakers, good value and a proper fit; one ran them from an older amplifier without trouble. None raise a complaint, but the site moderates reviews to remove unproven negative comments. We found no independent lab test, and Alpine's pages are promotional.

S2-S65 vs R2-S65, S2-S65C and BRV-S65

The R2-S65 (₹24,999 MRP) raises the rating to 100 W RMS and 300 W peak and uses a hard-dome tweeter, with grilles included. Its 88 dB sensitivity matches the S2-S65 on Alpine UK's figures, so it won't play louder on the same power; the gains are headroom and tweeter character. Note the different cutouts: 135 mm for the R2 against 128.8 mm here.

The S2-S65C (₹17,999 MRP) is the component version, rated at the same 80 W RMS and 88 dB in our listing. Its separate tweeters can sit higher on the door or dash, which lifts the soundstage, at the cost of more installation work. Alpine's BassRev BRV-S65 (₹27,999 MRP) takes a different route: Alpine quotes 38 Hz only with BassRev tuning from its OPTIM8 processor (60 Hz without), it needs more power at 84 dB, and the 156 mm cutout in our listing is larger, so measure first.

Who should buy it, and who shouldn't

Buy the S2-S65 if your car has 6.5-inch openings, you want a clear upgrade over factory speakers without moving tweeters, and you'd like the option of adding the S2-A36F later.

Look elsewhere if you want the best possible stereo image, where the S2-S65C's separate tweeters help, or if you plan a powerful amplifier, where the R2-S65's higher rating fits better. Nor is any 6.5-inch coaxial a subwoofer; Alpine's S2-W10 is one S-Series option for the low end.

Installation notes for Indian cars

Many factory openings need an adapter ring, so measure against the 128.8 mm cutout and confirm the window glass clears the 57.7 mm depth. The 19.3 mm mounting height matters too, since some door trims leave little room in front of the speaker. Seal the frame with foam gasket tape, damp the outer door skin and seal large access holes; our sound damping guide shows how. Check polarity and use proper connectors rather than twisted wires, which loosen on rough roads. VA3 Car Studio in Ghaziabad offers professional installation and can check fitment for your car first.

Price and where to buy

The Alpine S2-S65 carries an India MRP of ₹13,999 for the set, with effect from 1 June 2026. Check today's price and stock on our Alpine S2-S65 6.5-inch coaxial listing. Every set we sell is a genuine Alpine product.

The bottom line

For a 6.5-inch door upgrade, this is the entry point to Alpine's S-Series: a light composite cone, Hi-Res certification, an 80 W RMS rating that pairs naturally with the S2-A36F, and a large, positive, if heavily incentivised, owner pool. It won't image like a component set or hit like a subwoofer, but as a drop-in replacement it does what most buyers need.

Alpine S2-S65 FAQ

Is the Alpine S2-S65 a good replacement for factory speakers?

OnlineCarStereo owners describe it as a big step up from factory speakers, and Best Buy reviewers praise its clarity. Check Alpine UK's 128.8 mm cutout and 57.7 mm depth against your door; many cars need an adapter ring.

What is the difference between the S2-S65 and the S2-S65C?

The S2-S65 is a coaxial with the tweeter built into the woofer. The S2-S65C is a component set with separate tweeters that can be mounted higher, which improves imaging. Our listings rate both at 80 W RMS and 88 dB.

Which amplifier suits the S2-S65?

Alpine's S2-A36F, at 60 W RMS per channel into 4 Ω, sits inside the speaker's 80 W RMS rating and accepts speaker-level input from a factory head unit through an optional cable.
