Alpine SPJ-691C3 Review: A Budget 6x9 for the Rear Deck
Updated: Oct 6
The Alpine SPJ-691C3 is a 6x9-inch (16 x 24 cm) three-way coaxial speaker from Alpine's entry-level Type-J range, rated at 60 W RMS with a quoted 30 Hz to 30 kHz response, a PEI woofer cone and a silk-dome tweeter. At an India MRP of ₹6,699 it is the 6x9 member of the Type-J range we stock, and it costs about a third as much as the S-Series S2-S69. It suits sedan owners with a 6x9 opening in the rear parcel shelf, or anyone building a budget system with a custom rear board, who wants a bigger, fuller sound than typical factory speakers. See today's price on our Alpine SPJ-691C3 product page.

The short version
An oval 6x9 has more cone area than a 6.5-inch round speaker, which is why it is the classic rear-deck choice for fuller bass.
Rated at 60 W RMS; the 400 W peak figure is a marketing number, so plan around the RMS rating.
Alpine doesn't publish sensitivity or impedance on its Asia page, so confirm both before matching an amplifier.
Alpine gives a 146 x 217.4 mm mounting size and 75 mm of depth, so a rear deck or custom board is the usual home.

Figures are from Alpine Asia's SPJ-691C3 product page, and they match our store listing. Alpine's series text says the Type-J speakers are only 44 mm deep, but that line appears to describe the 6-inch models, whose own specification is 44 mm; this 6x9's is 75 mm.
Where a 6x9 fits in an Indian car
Door speaker openings are usually round, so a 6x9 normally goes in one of two places: an existing oval opening in a sedan's rear parcel shelf, or a custom board made for it. Check what your car has before buying, because forcing a 6x9 into a round 6.5-inch hole is not an option.
On a parcel shelf, depth is rarely the limit, but what sits underneath is. In some sedans the boot-lid hinges swing up close to the underside of the shelf, so check that 75 mm of magnet and basket will clear them through the whole arc of the lid. We do that check as part of fitting.
The rear deck is also one of the hottest spots in the cabin, sitting under the rear glass in full sun. That is one reason the SPJ-691C3's materials make sense here: rubber surrounds generally cope with heat and sunlight better than foam, and PEI (polyetherimide) is a stiff plastic that tolerates heat well.
Three ways, 60 W RMS and that 400 W peak
A three-way coaxial mounts two smaller drivers above the woofer instead of one, typically a tweeter plus a midrange or super-tweeter. Alpine's page names the silk-dome tweeter but doesn't describe the third driver, so don't expect detailed information on how the work is shared.
The power figures need a pinch of salt. The 60 W RMS rating is the one that matters for matching an amplifier; the 400 W peak number is more than six times higher and describes brief bursts, not music played for hours. Likewise, Alpine says both the 6-inch and 6x9 Type-J speakers reach 30 Hz to 30 kHz and calls that better than previous Type-J models and competing speakers. No tolerance is published, so treat it as a promotional claim rather than proof of deeper bass than pricier 6x9s.
Factory head unit or amplifier?
Alpine pitches the Type-J range as a factory speaker upgrade and says it is compatible with Alpine's entry-level two- and four-channel amplifiers. Without a published sensitivity figure, we can't say how loud it will play on head-unit power; Alpine only describes it as high efficiency. In practice, a factory head unit will get it working, and an amplifier will let the bigger cone do what it was bought for.
For a pair of 6x9s alone, Alpine's two-channel BBX-T600 is rated at 50 W RMS × 2 into 4 Ω, comfortably under the speaker's 60 W rating. To run front and rear speakers from one box, the four-channel BBX-F1200 pairs naturally with an SPJ front set. Because Alpine doesn't list the SPJ-691C3's impedance, ask us to confirm it before wiring anything in bridged or 2 Ω modes.
What owners and reviewers say about the Alpine SPJ-691C3
When we checked in October 2026, we couldn't find published owner reviews or independent tests of the SPJ-691C3 that we could verify. Alpine's own pages, from Alpine India and Alpine Asia, carry no reviews, only the manufacturer's description.
That description is promotional: an affordable way to upgrade factory speakers, high efficiency, and powerful bass without distortion. None of it has been independently measured as far as we could find. If you own a pair, tell us how they sound on your rear deck; real-world feedback is exactly what this model lacks.
SPJ-691C3 vs S2-S69 and R2-S69
The S2-S69 (₹19,999 MRP) is the step up. Alpine UK rates it at 85 W RMS with 90 dB sensitivity and a 4 Ω impedance, and it is Hi-Res Audio certified. The published sensitivity alone makes it easier to plan around, though it is a two-way design and costs about three times as much.
The R2-S69 (₹29,999 MRP) goes further, with 100 W RMS handling, glass-fibre reinforced cones, magnesium tweeters and grilles included, per Alpine UK. For a rear deck that mainly fills in the sound behind you, the SPJ-691C3 is the sensible budget choice; for a system where the 6x9s carry real weight, the S-Series and R-Series models are better documented.
Who should buy it, and who shouldn't
Buy the SPJ-691C3 if your car has a 6x9 rear-deck opening or you're adding a rear board, you want fuller rear sound on a tight budget, and you may add a small amplifier later. It also makes sense alongside an SPJ front pair, such as the SPJ-161C2, for a matched entry-level system.
Look elsewhere if your car has only round 6.5-inch openings, or you want published sensitivity and impedance figures to design a system around. The S2-S69 answers the second point.
Installation notes for Indian cars
A parcel shelf made of thin pressed board or plastic can buzz once a 6x9 starts moving air. Fix loose panels, damp the shelf and seal gaps around the speaker; our sound damping guide covers the materials. If the shelf flexes, a rigid MDF mounting ring spreads the load.
Run fresh speaker wire to the rear, and keep it away from the boot-lid hinges and seat-belt mechanisms. Check the 146 x 217.4 mm mounting size against your opening, because 6x9 cut-outs vary between cars and brands. The bottom line
The SPJ-691C3 is a straightforward, inexpensive way to fill a 6x9 rear-deck opening with an Alpine speaker that uses a rubber surround and PEI cone. Its weak points are on paper: no published sensitivity or impedance, a peak rating more than six times its RMS figure and no owner feedback we could verify. As a rear fill or the start of a budget system, its price and rating fit that role on paper; for a 6x9 that carries the system, step up to the S2-S69.
Alpine SPJ-691C3 FAQ
Will the Alpine SPJ-691C3 fit my car?
Only if there's a 6x9 opening or room for a custom board. Alpine gives a 146 x 217.4 mm mounting size and 75 mm of depth, and on a rear deck the boot-lid hinges must clear the magnet. Tell us your car's make, model and year and we'll check.
Does the SPJ-691C3 need an amplifier?
Not to work, but it benefits from one. Alpine doesn't publish its sensitivity, so head-unit loudness is hard to predict. A two-channel amplifier such as the BBX-T600, at 50 W RMS per channel, sits within its 60 W RMS rating.
What does three-way mean on the SPJ-691C3?
It means three drivers share the frequency range: the 6x9 woofer plus two smaller units mounted above it. Alpine's page names a silk-dome tweeter but doesn't describe the third driver.
