Alpine S2-S69 Review: Hi-Res 6x9 Coaxials for Oval Openings and Parcel Shelves

Updated: Oct 6

The Alpine S2-S69 is a 6x9-inch (16 x 24 cm) two-way coaxial speaker from Alpine's next-generation S-Series, rated at 85 W RMS and 260 W peak into 4 Ω, with 90 dB sensitivity and Hi-Res Audio certification up to 40 kHz. Its Indian MRP is ₹19,999, the middle of the three Alpine 6x9 coaxials we stock: above the budget SPJ-691C3 and below the ₹29,999 R2-S69. Alpine's US site pitches it as a new standard for entry-level sound. It suits cars with oval openings or a rear parcel shelf, and buyers wanting more cone area than a 6.5-inch speaker for less than R-Series money. See the set and today's price on our S2-S69 product page.

Alpine S2-S69 S-Series Hi-Res 6x9-inch two-way coaxial speakers

Key takeaways

  • A drop-in coaxial: the 25 mm dome tweeter is built into the 6x9 woofer, so each side is one speaker to mount.

  • At 90 dB it is relatively easy to drive from a head unit, and the 85 W RMS rating leaves room for a modest amplifier later.

  • Alpine UK lists a 74.4 mm mounting depth and a 152 x 224 mm oval cutout, so measure before ordering.

  • US retail reviews praise its clarity but are incentivised or moderated; the repeated complaint is limited bass without a subwoofer.

Figures come from Alpine UK's S2-S69 page and Alpine USA's S2-S69 page. They disagree on the bottom of the range: our listing's 85 Hz follows Alpine USA, while Alpine UK quotes 55 Hz. Neither names the tweeter material.

Cone, surround and tweeter

Alpine blends polypropylene, glass fibre and mica in the cone and says the mix keeps it light, loud and low in distortion. That is Alpine's claim, not a measurement, but the materials suit a car: polypropylene shrugs off the moisture of a monsoon-damp door, and the fillers stiffen the cone so it holds its shape at volume.

The cone rides on Alpine's High-Amplitude Multi-Roll (HAMR) surround, which Alpine says allows maximum cone movement, and Alpine UK says in-line crossovers keep installation simple. The 25 mm dome tweeter carries the Hi-Res badge, certified to 40 kHz. Nobody hears that octave, so treat it as a sign of extension; placement and setup decide how clean the top end sounds in your car.

Head unit or amplifier?

A 90 dB rating means the S2-S69 reaches everyday volumes on head-unit power, which helps if you're keeping a factory touchscreen. But a head unit's built-in amplifier runs out of clean power well short of 85 W RMS, and when it clips, the tweeter takes the damage.

The natural partner is Alpine's S2-A36F, rated at 60 W RMS per channel into 4 Ω, comfortably inside the speaker's rating. Its manual lists a 50 to 400 Hz high-pass filter and a speaker-level input (via an optional cable) that suits a retained factory screen. For four speakers and a subwoofer from one box, the S2-A55V adds a 200 W RMS subwoofer channel to four 40 W RMS channels. Our guide on whether you need an amplifier covers the basics.

Where a 6x9 fits in an Indian car

Oval factory openings may need only an adapter ring; round openings need a custom door baffle or parcel-shelf panel. Measure against the 152 x 224 mm cutout and 74.4 mm depth, check that door glass clears the magnet when fully down, and allow for the 7.3 mm mounting height behind trim.

On a parcel shelf the speakers sit in direct sun, within reach of anything tossed back there, so the optional KTE-S69G grille is worth adding. A coaxial's tweeter fires from wherever the woofer sits, so a low-mounted 6x9 places the sound low in the cabin; that is why 6x9s often serve as rear fill behind a front component set such as the S2-S65C. Wherever they go, seal and damp the panel, as our sound damping guide explains.

What owners and reviewers say about the Alpine S2-S69

All the feedback we found, when we checked in October 2026, comes from US retailers; none of it is independent testing.

On Best Buy, all seven reviews give five stars, a 5.0 average, and all seven reviewers would recommend them. They mention crisp, clear sound, good quality and fair value, and a Best Buy employee says they sound excellent with an Alpine amplifier. Read them with care: every review carries Best Buy's label saying the reviewer received promo considerations or a sweepstakes entry for writing it, and most were written within weeks of purchase.

OnlineCarStereo shows five reviews dated December 2023 to August 2024. Buyers praise clear sound with little distortion at high volume, a simple installation, and strong mids and highs. Two of the five note light bass; one suggests considering a subwoofer. The site moderates reviews to remove unproven negative comments, so treat it as a favourable sample.

Crutchfield also has a review page for this model, but its reviews didn't load when we checked, so we can't report them. Alpine's own pages are promotional. We found no lab test or long-term forum report; if you've fitted a pair, tell us.

S2-S69 vs R2-S69 and the round S2 models

The R2-S69 costs ₹29,999 MRP. The extra buys a 100 W RMS and 300 W peak rating, a magnesium hard-dome tweeter (Alpine doesn't name the S2's tweeter material) and grilles in the box. Both use glass fibre in the cone and a HAMR surround, and sensitivity is close: Alpine UK lists the R2-S69 at 88 dB, its US manual at 90 dB. The R2's cutout is 149 x 220 mm, so check which suits your opening. On a 60 W amplifier neither power rating is the limit, so the R2's case rests on its tweeter, grilles and headroom.

For round openings, the S-Series offers the S2-S65 6.5-inch coaxial (₹13,999 MRP) and the S2-S50 5.25-inch coaxial (₹11,999 MRP), with less cone area but no panel cutting.

Who should buy it, and who shouldn't

Buy the S2-S69 if your car has oval openings or you're planning a parcel-shelf or custom-door install, you want an easy-to-drive coaxial, and you may add an amplifier later.

Look elsewhere if you only have round openings and don't want custom panels, or you expect deep bass from the 6x9s alone; for that, Alpine's S2-W10 is one S-Series subwoofer option. If you want a magnesium tweeter and more power handling for a strong amplifier, step up to the R2-S69.

Installation notes for Indian cars

Seal the frame to the baffle with a foam gasket and check polarity on both sides; a reversed speaker cancels bass. Keep crimps tight, since rough roads loosen them. If you add an amplifier, use the 8 AWG power wire the S2-A36F manual specifies; undersized wire drops voltage, which already sags at idle with the AC running. VA3 Car Studio in Ghaziabad offers professional installation and can check fitment before you buy.

Alpine S2-S69 - another view

The bottom line

This is a sensible 6x9: a light composite cone, a 90 dB rating that works on head-unit power, and an 85 W RMS rating that suits a modest amplifier. Owner feedback is positive but thin and not independent, and the caveat reviewers raise is light bass, which a subwoofer addresses. If your car can't take a 6x9, the round S2 models are simpler.

Alpine S2-S69 FAQ

Can the Alpine S2-S69 run on a head unit without an amplifier?

Yes. Its 90 dB sensitivity makes it relatively easy to drive, so it plays at everyday volumes on head-unit power. An amplifier giving around 60 W RMS per channel, such as Alpine's S2-A36F, lets it play louder without the tweeter straining.

Will the S2-S69 fit my car?

Only if there's room for a 6x9. Alpine UK lists a 152 x 224 mm oval cutout and a 74.4 mm mounting depth. Oval factory openings may need only an adapter, while round openings need a custom panel. Ask us to check fitment before ordering.

Do I need a subwoofer with the S2-S69?

For deep bass, yes. Two OnlineCarStereo reviewers note light bass, and one suggests considering a subwoofer. A sub also lets you high-pass the 6x9s, so they play louder and cleaner.
