DS18 8XL800-4 Review: 400 W RMS 8-Inch XL Mid-Range, 2-Inch Voice Coil

6 min read

The DS18 8XL800-4 is a 203 mm (8-inch) XL-series mid-range loudspeaker with a 2-inch voice coil, rated by DS18 at 400 W RMS into 4 ohms and a separate 800 W maximum. At ₹22,990 MRP it is the second-most expensive of the eight single DS18 mid-range and full-range drivers we list, and it suits a buyer with a large amplifier and a planned front stage who wants an 8-inch driver with a published response down to 60 Hz. You can see it on our DS18 8XL800-4 product page.

DS18 8XL800-4 8-inch XL mid-range loudspeaker

Quick summary

  • DS18 lists 400 W RMS and a separate 800 W maximum. Size the amplifier on the RMS figure, and remember that 400 W per channel is a large amplifier.

  • The published response is 60 Hz to 8 kHz at 99 dB with a 90 Hz recommended high-pass, the lowest start and lowest top end of the three 8-inch DS18 mid-range drivers we list.

  • It needs a 183 mm (7.2 in) cut-out and 84.5 mm of mounting depth, and no grille is included.

  • DS18's shop shows two reviews, one reporting a failed pair that the reviewer says DS18 covered under warranty, and we found no independent reviews.

Figures come from our listing, checked against DS18's 8XL800-4 product page and its owner's manual (manufacturer material, so promotional). One naming point: the title of our store listing says EXL, while DS18's page calls the series XL and its manual names no series. We follow DS18 and say XL.

400 W RMS and 800 W maximum: sizing the amplifier

DS18 prints two power figures for this driver, 400 W RMS and 800 W maximum, and only the first is RMS. DS18's help page describes RMS as the constant power supplied to the speaker, notes that every amplifier has its own maximum output, and advises choosing an amplifier that can output the correct RMS rating for your speakers.

In practice 400 W RMS per channel at 4 ohms points to a large amplifier, and that decision comes before the driver choice. Our own view, not DS18's, is that the rating is a ceiling and a smaller amplifier is acceptable if it is kept out of clipping. Plan the power wiring and fusing to the amplifier's own manual. DS18's warranty page lists use outside recommended parameters (overpowering is its example) and distortion or clipping from improper tuning among its exclusions.

Where it plays: 60 Hz to 8 kHz

Among the 8-inch DS18 mid-range drivers we list, this one has the lowest published starting point and the lowest top end: 60 Hz to 8 kHz, against 115 Hz to 16 kHz for the PRO-X8.4BM and 100 Hz to 12.5 kHz for the 8PRO400MR-4. DS18 recommends a 90 Hz high-pass. A response that stops at 8 kHz leaves the top of the range to a tweeter, and low bass below 60 Hz to a subwoofer.

Because the recommended high-pass is lower than on the other two 8-inch mid-range drivers, a DSP or an amplifier with adjustable filters is the practical route. Our article on why a DSP matters in a car system explains what it adds, and VA3 Car Studio does DSP tuning. Sensitivity is a rough guide under DS18's test conditions, not a loudness promise, and we have not measured it.

What owners and reviewers say about the DS18 8XL800-4

When we checked in October 2026, the only buyer feedback we could read was two reviews on DS18's own shop page, neither with a date. One reviewer says they put the speakers in their doors and found them very loud and clear. The other also calls them extremely loud and recommends them highly, but says they blew their own pair, which they think could have been user error or a bad batch, and that DS18 covered them under warranty as advertised. The loudness remarks are buyers' impressions, not claims from us, and the warranty comment is one buyer's experience, not a statement of India terms. Both reviews sit in the first bar of a rating breakdown the text does not label.

The door review is the closest thing to a car-door report we found for this model, but it names no vehicle, amplifier or baffle, and neither review says what power it was run on, so we cannot say why one pair failed. Two reviews are not a sample. DS18's shop does not say how it moderates reviews. We found no forum threads or independent retailer reviews we could read, and large marketplaces such as Amazon block automated reading. If you own one, we would like to hear how it behaves in your car.

DS18 8XL800-4 compared with its siblings

The DS18 PRO-X8.4BM (₹8,990 MRP) is rated at 275 W RMS and 97 dB, so this driver has 125 W more RMS handling and 2 dB higher sensitivity. The PRO-X8.4BM has a 38.6 mm voice coil against 50.8 mm here, but a larger published Xmax (9.3 mm against 2.3 mm). The cut-outs are almost the same, 182 mm and 183 mm.

The DS18 8PRO400MR-4 (₹9,990 MRP) is rated at 200 W RMS and 104 dB with a 160 Hz recommended high-pass. In 6.5-inch form, the DS18 6XL600-4 (₹13,990 MRP) is also an XL driver, rated at 300 W RMS and 97 dB with a 60 Hz to 12.5 kHz response.

Who should buy it, and who shouldn't

Buy it if you are building a front stage around a large amplifier or DSP, you want an 8-inch driver with a published response down to 60 Hz, and you can supply a rigid baffle with a 183 mm cut-out and 84.5 mm of depth.

Look elsewhere if you plan to run it from a head unit, if your amplifier has no adjustable filter, if you want a grille in the box, or if the PRO-X8.4BM at ₹14,000 less at MRP already covers the power you need.

Installation notes for Indian cars

Measure before ordering. The cut-out is 183 mm, the mounting depth 84.5 mm and the overall depth 96.4 mm, which is more than the mounting depth, so check clearance behind the baffle for the magnet and any wiring. That is much larger than a typical 6.5-inch door opening, so expect a custom baffle, pod or panel. VA3 Car Studio builds door baffles and speaker pods and offers professional installation in Ghaziabad. If the driver will be visible, plan a grille or cover separately.

Door cavities see water in the monsoon, so keep the moisture barrier intact, and damp the panel as our sound damping guide describes, so a rigid baffle is not fighting a rattling door skin.

Price and where to buy

The DS18 8XL800-4 carries an India MRP of ₹22,990 and is sold as a single piece, so a pair means two (₹45,980 at MRP). VA3 Car Studio often sells below MRP, so check the current offer on the 8XL800-4 product page. Warranty terms are DS18's own, and its warranty page does not say how they apply to purchases outside the US, so confirm the India terms with us before you buy.

DS18 8XL800-4 - another view

The bottom line

The 8XL800-4 is an 8-inch XL mid-range with a 400 W RMS rating, a 2-inch voice coil and a published 60 Hz to 8 kHz response. It makes sense only inside a planned system: a large amplifier sized on RMS, adjustable filters, a rigid baffle, and a tweeter above 8 kHz.

DS18 8XL800-4 FAQ

How much power does the DS18 8XL800-4 handle?

DS18 rates it at 400 W RMS and gives a separate maximum rating of 800 W. Compare an amplifier channel's RMS output at 4 ohms with the 400 W figure; the maximum is not an RMS number.

Is the DS18 8XL800-4 an EXL or an XL?

The title of our store listing says EXL, but DS18's product page calls the series XL and its manual names no series. We follow DS18 and call it the XL-series 8XL800-4.

What frequency range does the 8XL800-4 cover?

DS18 publishes 60 Hz to 8 kHz with a recommended 90 Hz high-pass, so it still needs a subwoofer below that range and a tweeter above it.

What cut-out does the 8XL800-4 need?

DS18 lists a 183 mm (7.2 in) front-mount cut-out, 84.5 mm of mounting depth and a 210 mm overall diameter. Check them against your mounting position, and ask us about fitment before ordering.
