DS18 6XL600-4 Review: 300 W RMS, 2-Inch Voice Coil, 60 Hz to 12.5 kHz

6 min read

The DS18 6XL600-4 is a 165 mm (6.5-inch) XL-series mid-range loudspeaker with a 2-inch voice coil, rated by DS18 at 300 W RMS into 4 ohms and a separate 600 W maximum. At ₹13,990 MRP it is the cheaper of the two 6.5-inch XL drivers we list, ₹11,000 below the neodymium 6XL650NB-4, and it suits a buyer with a large amplifier or DSP who wants a mid-range with a published response from 60 Hz to 12.5 kHz. You can see it on our DS18 6XL600-4 product page.

Figures come from our listing, checked against DS18's 6XL600-4 product page and its owner's manual (manufacturer material, so promotional). Our listing title says EXL, while DS18's page says XL and its manual names no series; we follow DS18.

300 W RMS and 600 W maximum: reading the two figures

DS18 prints two power figures for this driver. Only the first, 300 W RMS, is an RMS rating, and it is the one to set against an amplifier channel's RMS output at 4 ohms; 600 W is a maximum. DS18's help page describes RMS as the constant power supplied to the speaker, notes that every amplifier also has a max output, and advises choosing an amplifier that can output the correct RMS rating for your speakers.

A channel of 300 W RMS at 4 ohms is a large amplifier. Our own view, not DS18's, is that a smaller amplifier is a workable partner if it never clips. DS18's warranty page lists use outside recommended parameters (overpowering is its example) and distortion or clipping from improper tuning among its exclusions, so the gain setting is part of the decision.

Where it plays: 60 Hz to 12.5 kHz and a 100 Hz high-pass

Among the five 6.5-inch DS18 drivers we list as single pieces, this one has the lowest published starting point, 60 Hz, against 80 Hz for the 6XL650NB-4, 100 Hz for the PRO-X6.4BM and 6PRO300MR-4, and 200 Hz for the PRO-FR6NEO. That is where the response is quoted to begin, not where to set the filter: DS18 recommends a 100 Hz high-pass, and low bass still belongs to a subwoofer.

A DSP or an amplifier with adjustable filters is the practical way to set the high-pass and hand everything above 12.5 kHz to a tweeter. Our article on why a DSP matters in a car system explains what it adds, and VA3 Car Studio does DSP tuning. The 97 dB figure is DS18's rating under its own test conditions, not a loudness promise, and we have not measured it.

What owners and reviewers say about the DS18 6XL600-4

When we checked in October 2026, the only buyer feedback we could read was two undated reviews on DS18's own shop page. One reviewer calls it one of the best speakers they have owned and likes its frequency response. The other runs a set in the doors of a pickup truck on an aftermarket amplifier alongside DS18 tweeters, says they sound better than most door speakers they have tried, and sets a 125 Hz high-pass and lets the speaker play full range above it.

Both reviews sit in the first bar of an unlabelled rating breakdown, which we read as the top rating, but the page does not say so. Two reviews are a very small sample, neither reports a fault, and DS18's shop does not say how it moderates reviews. That 125 Hz setting is one owner's choice, above DS18's recommended 100 Hz. We found no forum threads or independent retailer reviews we could read, and large marketplaces such as Amazon block automated reading. If you own one, tell us how it behaves in your car.

DS18 6XL600-4 compared with other 6.5-inch DS18 drivers

The DS18 PRO-X6.4BM (₹6,490 MRP) is rated at 250 W RMS with a recommended 140 Hz high-pass, so it has 50 W less RMS handling and costs ₹7,500 less at MRP. Its voice coil is 38.6 mm against 50.8 mm here, but its published Xmax is larger, 8.2 mm against 3.7 mm. The DS18 6PRO300MR-4 (₹8,490 MRP) is rated at 150 W RMS and 102 dB with a 160 Hz recommended high-pass, so this driver has 150 W more RMS handling and 5 dB lower sensitivity.

The DS18 6XL650NB-4 (₹24,990 MRP) shares the 2-inch voice coil, 150 mm cut-out and 100 Hz recommended high-pass, swaps ferrite for neodymium rings, and is rated at 325 W RMS with an 80 Hz to 12.5 kHz response. Its mounting depth is 72 mm against 80 mm here, and it costs ₹11,000 more at MRP.

Who should buy it, and who shouldn't

Buy it if you are building a front stage around an amplifier or DSP with adjustable filters, you want a 6.5-inch driver with a 2-inch voice coil and a published response from 60 Hz, and your mounting position has a 150 mm cut-out and 80 mm of depth.

Look elsewhere if the head unit is your only power source, if a supplied grille matters to you since none is listed, or if the PRO-X6.4BM at ₹7,500 less at MRP already covers the power you need.

Installation notes for Indian cars

Measure before ordering. The 150 mm cut-out, 80 mm mounting depth and 89 mm overall depth are DS18's figures, and window glass travel and the door skin decide whether they fit your car. The overall depth is 9 mm more than the mounting depth, so check clearance behind the baffle. DS18 describes the terminals as spring-loaded push terminals, so check them against your cable before you buy wire. Neither our listing nor the DS18 pages we read mention a grille, so plan a grille or cover separately if the driver will be visible. VA3 Car Studio builds door baffles and speaker pods and offers professional installation in Ghaziabad.

Door cavities see water in the monsoon, so keep the moisture barrier intact, and damp the panel as our sound damping guide describes.

Price and where to buy

The DS18 6XL600-4 carries an India MRP of ₹13,990 and is sold as a single piece, so a pair means two (₹27,980 at MRP). VA3 Car Studio often sells below MRP, so check the current offer on the 6XL600-4 product page. Warranty terms are DS18's own, and its warranty page does not say how they apply to purchases outside the US, so confirm the India terms with us before you buy.

DS18 6XL600-4 - another view

The bottom line

The 6XL600-4 pairs a 300 W RMS rating and a 2-inch voice coil with a published response from 60 Hz. It makes sense inside a planned system: an amplifier sized on RMS, a 100 Hz high-pass, a tweeter above 12.5 kHz and 80 mm of mounting depth.

DS18 6XL600-4 FAQ

How much power does the DS18 6XL600-4 handle?

DS18 rates it at 300 W RMS and gives a separate maximum rating of 600 W. Compare an amplifier channel's RMS output at 4 ohms with the 300 W figure; the maximum is not an RMS number.

What high-pass filter does the 6XL600-4 need?

DS18 recommends a 100 Hz high-pass and publishes a 60 Hz to 12.5 kHz response, so set the filter in an amplifier or DSP and leave low bass to a subwoofer.

What cut-out does the 6XL600-4 need?

DS18 lists a 150 mm (5.9 in) front-mount cut-out, 80 mm of mounting depth and a 170 mm overall diameter. Check them against your mounting position, and ask us about fitment before ordering.

How does the 6XL600-4 differ from the 6XL650NB-4?

Both have a 2-inch voice coil. The 6XL650NB-4 uses neodymium rings, is rated at 325 W RMS with an 80 Hz to 12.5 kHz response and costs ₹24,990 MRP, against ₹13,990 here.
