DS18 PRO-X8.4BM Review: Fitting an 8-Inch Mid-Range in Your Car

6 min read

The DS18 PRO-X8.4BM is a 203 mm (8-inch) mid-range loudspeaker with a bullet dust cap, rated by DS18 at 275 W RMS into 4 ohms, plus a separate 550 W maximum rating. At ₹8,990 MRP it is the least expensive of the three single 8-inch DS18 mid-range drivers we list, and it suits a builder who has a baffle, pod or panel big enough for an 8-inch driver and an amplifier to power it. You can see it on our DS18 PRO-X8.4BM product page.

DS18 PRO-X8.4BM 8-inch mid-range bullet loudspeaker

Quick summary

  • DS18's 275 W RMS and 550 W maximum figures are separate ratings; match an amplifier's RMS output to the first.

  • The published response is 115 Hz to 16 kHz at 97 dB, with a recommended 120 Hz high-pass.

  • It needs a 182 mm (7.17 in) cut-out and 82 mm of mounting depth, so plan a baffle or pod around it.

  • The only reviews we could read are nine on DS18's own shop, and none describes a car installation. We found no independent reviews.

Figures come from our listing, checked against DS18's PRO-X8.4BM product page and its owner's manual (manufacturer material, so promotional). We found no disagreement between the three on these figures.

275 W RMS or 550 W: which number to use

DS18 prints 275 W RMS and a separate 550 W maximum for this driver. Only the first is an RMS figure, so it is the one to set against an amplifier channel's RMS rating at 4 ohms. DS18's help page explains the logic: RMS is the constant power supplied to the speaker, every amplifier also has its own maximum output figure, and DS18 advises choosing an amplifier that can output the correct RMS rating for your speakers.

Our own view, not DS18's, is to pick a channel whose RMS output at 4 ohms is no higher than 275 W, set the gains with a test tone and a meter, and treat clipping as the thing to avoid. DS18's warranty page lists use outside recommended parameters (overpowering is its example) and distortion or clipping from improper tuning among its exclusions.

Amplifier, filter and frequency range

DS18 quotes 97 dB for 1 W at 1 m and recommends a 120 Hz high-pass. The published response starts at 115 Hz and ends at 16 kHz, so low bass belongs to a subwoofer and the top of the range may still want a tweeter. A head unit's built-in amplifier is typically modest and may not offer an adjustable high-pass, so an amplifier or DSP is the more flexible partner.

Our article on why a DSP matters in a car system explains what it adds, and VA3 Car Studio does DSP tuning if you would rather hand that over. Set the high-pass first, then the gains.

What owners and reviewers say about the DS18 PRO-X8.4BM

When we checked in October 2026, the only buyer feedback we could read was on DS18's own shop page, which shows nine reviews. The rating breakdown in the text we read is unlabelled: one bar holds all nine (100%) and the other four are empty. We read the first as the top rating, but the page does not say so.

Four reviews with text were visible, and a fifth entry has none. One reviewer says they use the drivers on golf carts and motorcycles, and another recommends them to anyone. Some of the comments are about how loud the drivers are; that is the buyers' impression, not a measurement, and we make no loudness claim beyond DS18's published ratings. None describes a car installation, none reports a fault, and DS18's shop does not say how it moderates reviews.

We found no forum threads or independent retailer reviews we could read, and large marketplaces such as Amazon block automated reading. If you own one, we would like to hear how it sounds in your car.

DS18 PRO-X8.4BM compared with its siblings

The 6.5-inch DS18 PRO-X6.4BM (₹6,490 MRP) comes from the same series. DS18 rates it at 250 W RMS and 95 dB, against 275 W RMS and 97 dB here, and publishes a 100 Hz to 10 kHz response against 115 Hz to 16 kHz. It needs a 145 mm cut-out, 37 mm smaller than the 182 mm here.

Among the other 8-inch drivers we list, the DS18 8PRO400MR-4 (₹9,990 MRP) is rated at 200 W RMS and 104 dB, so it has 75 W less RMS handling and 7 dB higher sensitivity than this driver. The DS18 8XL800-4 (₹22,990 MRP) is rated at 400 W RMS and 99 dB, with a published 60 Hz to 8 kHz response and a recommended 90 Hz high-pass. Both need cut-outs within 5 mm of this one (187 mm and 183 mm).

Who should buy it, and who shouldn't

Buy it if you are building a custom baffle, pod or panel for an 8-inch driver, you have an amplifier or DSP with an adjustable high-pass, and you want the lowest MRP among the three 8-inch DS18 mid-range drivers we list.

Look elsewhere if you want a straight swap for a factory 6.5-inch speaker, if you expect it to produce deep bass, if the head unit is your only power source, or if the mounting position cannot spare 82 mm of depth.

Installation notes for Indian cars

Measure before ordering. A 182 mm cut-out is much larger than a typical 6.5-inch door opening, so expect a custom baffle, pod or panel rather than a direct fit. VA3 Car Studio builds door baffles and speaker pods and offers professional installation in Ghaziabad.

Check the 82 mm mounting depth against window glass travel, door-skin clearance and anything behind the panel. Door cavities see water in the monsoon and a lot of heat in summer, so keep the moisture barrier intact and damp the panel as our sound damping guide describes, so a rigid baffle is not fighting a rattling door skin.

Price and where to buy

The DS18 PRO-X8.4BM carries an India MRP of ₹8,990 and is sold as a single piece, so a pair means two (₹17,980 at MRP). VA3 Car Studio often sells below MRP, so check the current offer on the PRO-X8.4BM product page. Warranty terms are DS18's own, and its warranty page does not say how they apply to purchases outside the US, so confirm the India terms with us before you buy.

DS18 PRO-X8.4BM - another view

The bottom line

The PRO-X8.4BM is an 8-inch mid-range driver with a stated 275 W RMS rating, 97 dB sensitivity and a recommended 120 Hz high-pass. Its fit is the main question: confirm that you have room for the 182 mm cut-out and 82 mm of depth, size the amplifier on RMS, and the published figures give you a clear basis for the build.

DS18 PRO-X8.4BM FAQ

How much power does the DS18 PRO-X8.4BM handle?

DS18 rates it at 275 W RMS and gives a separate maximum rating of 550 W. Use the RMS figure when you compare it with an amplifier channel rated in RMS at 4 ohms; the maximum is not an RMS number.

What cut-out does the PRO-X8.4BM need?

DS18 lists a 182 mm (7.17 in) front-mount cut-out, 82 mm of mounting depth and a 209 mm overall diameter. Check them against your mounting position, and ask us about fitment before ordering.

Is the PRO-X8.4BM a subwoofer?

No. DS18 lists it as a mid-range loudspeaker with a published response of 115 Hz to 16 kHz and a recommended 120 Hz high-pass, so low bass still needs a subwoofer.

Is the PRO-X8.4BM sold as a pair?

Our listing sells it as a single piece, so a pair means ordering two. At MRP that is ₹17,980 for two, and we often sell below MRP, so check the current offer on the product page.
