DS18 8PRO400MR-4 Review: 104 dB Sensitivity, 200 W RMS and a 400 W Max

6 min read

The DS18 8PRO400MR-4 is a 203 mm (8-inch) high-sensitivity mid-range loudspeaker with a 4-ohm voice coil, rated by DS18 at 104 dB, 200 W RMS and a separate 400 W maximum. At ₹9,990 MRP it is the middle of the three single 8-inch DS18 mid-range drivers we list, and it suits a buyer who wants a sensitive driver and plans to run it from an amplifier or DSP with a high-pass near 160 Hz. You can see it on our DS18 8PRO400MR-4 product page.

DS18 8PRO400MR-4 8-inch high-sensitivity mid-range speaker

Quick summary

  • DS18 lists 200 W RMS and a separate 400 W maximum; the RMS figure is the one to match to an amplifier channel.

  • Its 104 dB sensitivity is the highest figure among the DS18 mid-range and full-range drivers we list, but its published Xmax is only 0.75 mm one way, so the 160 Hz high-pass matters.

  • It needs a 187 mm (7.36 in) cut-out and 88.5 mm of mounting depth. The grille is not included, and DS18's page and manual disagree on the terminal gauge.

  • The only reviews we could read are two on DS18's own shop. We found no independent reviews.

Figures come from our listing, checked against DS18's 8PRO400MR-4 product page and its owner's manual (manufacturer material, so promotional). The only mismatch we found is the terminal gauge, so we show both values rather than pick one.

RMS, maximum and sensitivity: reading the numbers

DS18's two power figures, 200 W RMS and 400 W maximum, are not interchangeable, and only the first is RMS. DS18's help page describes RMS as the constant power supplied to the speaker and advises choosing an amplifier able to output the correct RMS rating. Use 200 W RMS when you compare amplifier channels at 4 ohms, and leave the 400 W number out of the sums. DS18's warranty page lists use outside recommended parameters (overpowering is its example) among its exclusions.

Sensitivity is where this driver stands out. A higher figure means less amplifier power for the same level on paper, but it is a rough guide under DS18's test conditions, not a loudness promise, and we have not measured it.

Filter first: Xmax, the 160 Hz high-pass and your amplifier

DS18 publishes a 0.75 mm Xmax, a response from 100 Hz to 12.5 kHz and a recommended 160 Hz high-pass. A small Xmax and a high recommended filter point the same way: set the high-pass first, then the gain. A head unit's built-in amplifier is typically modest and may not have an adjustable filter, so a small amplifier or DSP is the more flexible partner.

Our article on why a DSP matters in a car system explains what it adds, and VA3 Car Studio does DSP tuning. Low bass still needs a subwoofer, and the top end beyond 12.5 kHz may want a tweeter.

Build, terminals and grille

DS18 lists a curvilinear paper cone, cloth surround, black steel basket and 40 oz ferrite magnet, plus a copper demodulating ring. Our listing says the ring is there to reduce harmonic and intermodulation distortion; we have not measured that. The push terminals are given as 8 gauge on DS18's product page and 16 gauge in its manual, so check them against your cable before you buy wire. Our listing and DS18's page say no grille is included, and the manual does not say.

What owners and reviewers say about the DS18 8PRO400MR-4

When we checked in October 2026, the only buyer feedback we could read was on DS18's own shop page. It shows two undated reviews, both in the first bar of an unlabelled rating breakdown. One describes the sound as extremely crisp and clear and recommends the speakers. The other says they sound great and have excellent range, also comments on how loud they get, and plans to buy another pair when they are on sale.

Neither review reports a fault or says what vehicle or enclosure was used, and DS18's shop does not say how it moderates reviews. Two reviews say little about the typical owner, and the loudness remark is one buyer's impression, not a measurement or a claim from us. We found no forum threads or independent retailer reviews we could read, and large marketplaces such as Amazon block automated reading. If you own one, we would like to hear how it sounds in your car.

DS18 8PRO400MR-4 compared with its siblings

At the same size, the DS18 PRO-X8.4BM (₹8,990 MRP) is rated at 275 W RMS and 97 dB, with a 115 Hz to 16 kHz response, a 120 Hz recommended high-pass and a 9.3 mm Xmax. Against it, this driver has 75 W less RMS handling, a much smaller published Xmax and 7 dB higher sensitivity, and its MRP is ₹1,000 higher.

The DS18 8XL800-4 (₹22,990 MRP) is rated at 400 W RMS and 99 dB, with a 60 Hz to 8 kHz response and a 90 Hz recommended high-pass. In the 6.5-inch size, the DS18 6PRO300MR-4 (₹8,490 MRP) comes from the same PRO line at 150 W RMS and 102 dB.

Who should buy it, and who shouldn't

Buy it if you want a high-sensitivity 8-inch driver for the mid-range, you will run it from an amplifier or DSP with a proper high-pass, and you have room for a 187 mm cut-out.

Look elsewhere if you expect deep bass or long excursion, if the head unit is your only power source, if you cannot spare 88.5 mm of depth, or if you want a grille in the box.

Installation notes for Indian cars

Measure first. A 187 mm cut-out is much larger than a typical 6.5-inch door opening, so expect a custom baffle, pod or panel. VA3 Car Studio builds door baffles and speaker pods and offers professional installation in Ghaziabad. If the driver will be visible, plan a grille or cover separately.

Check the 88.5 mm mounting depth against window glass travel and the door skin. Door cavities see water in the monsoon, so keep the moisture barrier intact, and damp the panel as our sound damping guide describes.

Price and where to buy

The DS18 8PRO400MR-4 carries an India MRP of ₹9,990 and is sold as a single piece, so a pair means two (₹19,980 at MRP). VA3 Car Studio often sells below MRP, so check the current offer on the 8PRO400MR-4 product page. Warranty terms are DS18's own, and its warranty page does not say how they apply to purchases outside the US, so confirm the India terms with us before you buy.

The bottom line

The 8PRO400MR-4 is a sensitive 8-inch mid-range driver with a 200 W RMS rating and a recommended 160 Hz high-pass. It rewards a planned build: size the amplifier on RMS, set the high-pass before the gain, and confirm the cut-out, depth and terminals before you order.

DS18 8PRO400MR-4 FAQ

How much power does the DS18 8PRO400MR-4 handle?

DS18 rates it at 200 W RMS and gives a separate maximum rating of 400 W. Compare an amplifier channel's RMS output at 4 ohms with the 200 W figure; the maximum is not an RMS number.

Does the 8PRO400MR-4 need a high-pass filter?

DS18 recommends a 160 Hz high-pass and publishes an Xmax of 0.75 mm one way, so set one in your amplifier or DSP before you raise the gain. A head unit with no adjustable filter is a poor match.

What cut-out does the 8PRO400MR-4 need?

DS18 lists a 187 mm (7.36 in) front-mount cut-out, 88.5 mm of mounting depth and a 208 mm overall diameter. Check them against your mounting position, and ask us about fitment before ordering.

Does the 8PRO400MR-4 come with a grille?

Our listing and DS18's product page say the grille is not included, and DS18's manual does not say either way. If the driver will be visible, plan a grille or cover separately.
