JL Audio 10TW3-D4 Review: 83 mm-Deep Bass, Owner Verdicts and Lab Results
Updated: Oct 6
The JL Audio 10TW3-D4 is a 10-inch thin-line subwoofer with dual 4-ohm voice coils, rated at 400 W RMS and needing just 83 mm (3.25 in) of mounting depth. JL recommends a 14.2-litre sealed box or a 17-litre ported one, driven by 200–400 W of amplifier power. At an Indian MRP of ₹55,990 it is the less expensive of the two TW3 models, ₹4,000 below the 12-inch. It's built for installs where depth is the hard limit, such as slim boxes behind seats, under load floors or in tight SUV and pickup spaces. Our 10TW3-D4 product page has today's price.

At a glance
An 83 mm mounting depth, against 124 mm for JL's conventional 10W0v3-4, lets the box be built wide and flat.
Dual 4 Ω coils wire to 2 Ω or 8 Ω, and the recommended amplifier range is 200–400 W RMS.
Six owner reviews praise tight bass and surprising output from such a thin driver; the one complaint is price.
An independent Klippel test confirmed the rated excursion but found high distortion in the lowest octave.

Specifications come from JL Audio's 10TW3 owner's manual and the 2026 Indian catalogue, which prints the model as 10 TW3 – D4; the amplifier range and cone material are from our listing. The warranty line is the manual's wording, so ask us how claims are handled in India.
What 83 mm of depth makes possible
JL's catalogue makes a point of the TW3's 3¼-inch mounting depth, and it is the reason to buy one. The conventional JL Audio 10W0v3-4 needs 124 mm, so the TW3 saves 41 mm, often enough to turn an impossible location, such as the gap behind a seat or under a load floor, into a workable one.
Thin doesn't mean the smallest box, though. The recommended 14.2 litres sealed is more than the 9.91 litres the 10TW1-4 asks for, and JL's own comparison drawing shows the TW3's complete box as the bigger of the two. The skill is in the shape: with so little depth needed, that volume can be spread into a wide, flat enclosure rather than a cube.
Long travel is how a thin driver still moves real air. The manual lists 15.2 mm of linear excursion, generous for a 10-inch, and our listing describes it as designed for powerful bass from small sealed boxes. The trade-off is 82.1 dB sensitivity, so it needs its full amplifier power to deliver.
Wiring and amplifier pairing
Two 4 Ω coils let you wire one sub to 2 Ω, with the coils in parallel, or 8 Ω, with them in series. For a single sub, 2 Ω is the practical choice, since mono amplifiers make far more power there than into 8 Ω.
The five-channel JD700/5 suits a one-amplifier system: its sub channel makes 300 W into 2 Ω, inside the TW3's 200–400 W window, and its four main channels give 75 W each into 4 Ω for the doors. A dedicated JD500/1 has more in hand, at 400 W into 2 Ω at 12.5 V and 500 W at 14.4 V, so set its gain to respect the driver's 400 W rating. Either way, set gains with a test tone rather than by ear.
Series wiring comes into its own with two subs. Each wired to 8 Ω and then paralleled, a pair presents 4 Ω, where the JD1000/1 is rated at 600 W, or 300 W per sub.
What owners and testers say about the JL Audio 10TW3-D4
Unusually for a thin-line sub, there is both owner feedback and an independent lab test. This is what we found when we checked in October 2026.
Six dated customer reviews on OnlineCarStereo, from 2021 to 2025, are consistently positive. Owners describe clean, tight bass from a shallow-mount driver and are surprised by how much output such a thin design produces, and they mention solid build and easy installation. One got deep bass from a custom ported box after upgrading the amplifier, and another rated it the best option for shallow installs, provided it is boxed and tuned properly. The only complaint, from one owner, is that it is expensive for a 10-inch. No star average was visible.
The independent view is more critical. ResoNix Sound Solutions' Klippel test of a new sample, bought from a private seller in July 2025 and measured in August 2025, found its BL-limited excursion closely matched JL's published Xmax: 15.52 mm measured against 15.2 mm. But distortion climbed steeply in the lowest octave, passing 10% at 20 Hz in the baseline test and averaging about 12% between 30 and 80 Hz at high drive, and the inductance limit was reached at about 6.75 mm of excursion. The tester also found asymmetry in the motor's force (BL) curve, which was offset inward, and in the suspension, scored it 404 out of 1,250 (32%) on ResoNix's own scale, and said JL's low-distortion marketing doesn't match the measurements.
ResoNix's modelling also pointed to a much larger sealed box, about 1.49 cu ft (roughly 42 litres) for the textbook Qtc of 0.707, against JL's 0.50 cu ft, and it positioned the driver for installs where shallow depth matters more than accuracy. That fits the owner picture: reviewers judge it as a shallow-mount solution, and on those terms they're satisfied.
How it compares with the 12TW3-D4 and 10TW1-4
The JL Audio 12TW3-D4 (₹59,990 MRP) costs ₹4,000 more and shares the 400 W rating, dual 4 Ω coils and 15.2 mm Xmax. It mounts only 6 mm deeper at 89 mm and is about 2 dB more sensitive at 84.11 dB, but needs a 22.7-litre sealed box and a 295 mm cutout. If the box can grow, the 12 is the better buy; if the footprint is fixed, stay with the 10.
The 10TW1-4 (₹45,990 MRP) is the other thin JL 10. It mounts deeper at 111 mm but needs only 9.91 litres sealed, accepts amplifiers from 75 W, and is rated at 300 W into a single 4 Ω coil. Choose it when total volume is tight and the TW3 when depth is. Thar owners can also look at the catalogue's vehicle-specific Mahindra Thar Stealthbox.
The right buyer, and the wrong one
It's the right choice if depth is the hard limit: a slim behind-seat or under-floor box where a conventional 10 won't fit, driven by 200–400 W. Owners in exactly that situation are happy with it.
It's the wrong one if low distortion in the deepest bass matters most to you, given what the independent test found below 80 Hz, or if you have room for a conventional sub. At ₹55,990 MRP it is also expensive for a 10-inch, as one owner pointed out.
Fitting it in Indian cars
The catalogue drawing gives 0.519 cu ft gross for the 0.50 cu ft net box, and the 0.019 cu ft difference is exactly the driver displacement in JL's manual. So build the empty box to about 14.7 litres of internal air space and let the driver take its share. Allow more than 83 mm behind the baffle for the terminals and some air, cut a 244 mm hole and leave room for the 284 mm overall diameter.
Behind-seat and under-floor boxes sit close to passengers, so rattles matter: glue and screw every joint, and fix the box so it can't creak over rough roads. Keep it out of any spare-wheel well that collects water in the monsoon, fuse the power cable near the battery, and check voltage at idle with the AC on if the bass fades in traffic. Price and where to buy the 10TW3-D4
The JL Audio 10TW3-D4 has an MRP of ₹55,990 in the 2026 Indian price list. VA3 Car Studio often sells below MRP, so see our 10TW3-D4 store page for the current price. It is a genuine JL Audio driver, carrying the catalogue's Built in USA badge with imported and domestic components.

Our take
The 10TW3-D4 earns its place in one situation: when 83 mm is all the depth you have. Owners in that position report tight, surprisingly strong bass, and the lab confirms it moves as far as JL says. It doesn't measure cleanly in the deepest bass and it's pricey for a 10, so if there's room for a conventional driver, that is usually the better value.
JL Audio 10TW3-D4 FAQ
How deep is the JL Audio 10TW3-D4?
Its mounting depth is 83 mm (3.25 in), according to JL's manual and catalogue. Leave a little extra behind the baffle for the terminals, and remember the cone needs clearance in front too, since it has 15.2 mm of linear excursion.
Should I wire the 10TW3-D4 to 2 ohms or 8 ohms?
For one sub on a mono amplifier, wire the coils in parallel for 2 Ω, where the amplifier makes far more power than into 8 Ω. Use 8 Ω per sub when combining two subs, which gives the amplifier a 4 Ω load.
Can I put the 10TW3-D4 in a ported box?
Yes. JL's manual recommends 17 litres (0.60 cu ft) ported or 14.2 litres (0.50 cu ft) sealed, and one owner reports deep bass from a custom ported box after an amplifier upgrade.
