JL Audio JD500/1 Review: The Right-Sized Monoblock for One Subwoofer

Updated: Oct 6

The JL Audio JD500/1 is a Class D monoblock subwoofer amplifier rated at 250 W into 4 Ω, 350 W into 3 Ω and 500 W into 2 Ω at 14.4 V, from a 242 x 190 x 53 mm chassis. With an MRP of ₹35,990 it is the smaller of the two JD monoblocks in the 2026 Indian catalogue, at roughly half the price and half the power of the JD1000/1. It suits a buyer adding one subwoofer, or a modest pair, to a factory or aftermarket system without the electrical demand of a larger monoblock. Today's offer is on our JD500/1 monoblock amplifier page.

JL Audio JD500/1 Class D monoblock subwoofer amplifier

Key takeaways

  • Three impedance ratings (4, 3 and 2 Ω) give flexibility in how you wire one or two subwoofers.

  • JL's 12.5 V figures (225 W at 4 Ω, 400 W at 2 Ω) show what to expect when voltage sags in traffic.

  • A 45 Hz bass EQ and an optional RBC-1 remote level control give practical control over the low end, the remote from the driver's seat.

  • Owner reviews are positive, with no complaints recorded, though the main source moderates its reviews.

Figures come from JL's JD monoblock owner's manual, which covers the JD250/1, JD500/1 and JD1000/1 and is hosted by a third-party site, plus our store listing and the 2026 Indian catalogue. The manual's three-year warranty extension applies to US authorised-dealer installs with JL power wiring; ask us which terms apply here.

Choosing the load: 4, 3 or 2 Ω

At 4 Ω the JD500/1 delivers 250 W, an exact match for a single JL 8W3v3-4 (250 W RMS) and a comfortable one for the 300 W 10W0v3-4. Drop to 2 Ω and the output doubles to 500 W, which is where the amp is most useful: two 4 Ω subwoofers wired in parallel each receive about 250 W, so a pair of 8W3v3-4 drivers is a neat fit.

A dual 4 Ω voice-coil driver wired in parallel also presents 2 Ω. JL's shallow 10TW3-D4 is rated at 400 W RMS, so 500 W at 14.4 V is slightly more than it needs; set the gain with that in mind. The 3 Ω rating of 350 W is a less common middle option, useful mainly with 3 Ω drivers.

Low voltage, bass EQ and the fuse

JL publishes ratings at 12.5 V as well as 14.4 V, and for a subwoofer amp they are worth studying. At 4 Ω the drop is small, from 250 W to 225 W, but at 2 Ω it is 500 W to 400 W. If you plan a 2 Ω system for a car that spends much of its life idling with the AC on, size your expectations around the lower figure.

The single-band bass EQ at 45 Hz adds up to 12 dB, and it needs a light touch. Each 3 dB of boost doubles the power demanded at that frequency, so a full +12 dB asks for roughly 16 times the power at 45 Hz and will find the amplifier's limit quickly. JL specifies a 50 A fuse, which points to a worst-case draw most cars can manage when the power cable is sized properly for the run.

What owners and reviewers say about the JL Audio JD500/1

When we checked in October 2026, OnlineCarStereo carried eight owner reviews dated March 2021 to November 2023. Owners say the amp delivers the power and quality JL promises and installs easily, and they describe top-tier brand quality at a competitive price. Reviewers also say it drives a single subwoofer hard, and one owner running it at 2 Ω was planning to add a second.

None of those reviews records a complaint, but OnlineCarStereo says it moderates reviews and may remove unproven negative comments, so read them as a favourable sample. Creative Audio, a retailer, shows a single five-star review whose text wasn't visible to us; its listing does confirm the JD500/1 name with Garmin's part number.

JD500/1 vs JD1000/1, the JD700/5 and Zapco's HB 501D II

The JD1000/1 (₹74,990 MRP) more than doubles the output at 4 Ω (600 W) and doubles it at 2 Ω (1,000 W), in a chassis 48 mm longer and with an 80 A fuse. It makes sense for large, power-hungry drivers; for one or two modest subwoofers, the JD500/1 is the better match. The JD700/5 puts a 180 W or 300 W subwoofer channel alongside four speaker channels, but a JD500/1 gives the sub noticeably more power.

Zapco's HB 501D II claims 300 W at 4 Ω and the same 500 W at 2 Ω in a smaller chassis, with a subsonic filter. It takes RCA inputs only, though, has no Indian MRP or owner reviews yet, and isn't in our store, whereas the JD500/1's RCA inputs include a speaker-level range and it has a track record.

Who should buy it, and who shouldn't

Buy the JD500/1 if you want clean, controlled bass from one subwoofer or a matched pair, value JL's published low-voltage ratings, and need an amp that can take a factory speaker-level signal, through an adapter lead, when there's no RCA output.

Look elsewhere if you're building around a large, high-power driver, where the JD1000/1 is the right tool, or you want everything in one box, in which case the JD700/5 saves a mounting spot at the cost of subwoofer power.

Installation notes for Indian cars

The JD500/1 shares its 242 x 190 mm footprint with the JD400/4, so the two sit neatly side by side on a boot amp board. Mount it on a side panel or the rear-seat back rather than on the subwoofer box, keep speaker leads short, and leave space around the chassis for air in a hot boot.

Run the power cable from the battery with an inline fuse close to the terminal (JL lists 50 A for this amp), earth it to bare metal near the amp, and keep signal leads away from the power run. The optional RBC-1 remote (₹6,990 MRP) is worth considering if you'd like to trim bass for different music or passengers. VA3 Car Studio installs subwoofer systems at our Ghaziabad studio.

Price and where to buy

The JL Audio JD500/1 carries an MRP of ₹35,990 in the 2026 Indian catalogue, which lists it as the JD500/1D; JL's own name, and the one on the amplifier, is JD500/1. VA3 Car Studio often sells below MRP, so check the current price on our JD500/1 product page. Every unit we sell is a genuine JL Audio product, distributed in India by Supreme Audiotek Pvt. Ltd., New Delhi.

The bottom line

The JD500/1 is a sensibly sized monoblock: enough power for one good subwoofer or a matched pair, published low-voltage figures, a speaker-level input range and a compact chassis. Use the bass EQ sparingly, plan around 400 W if you run 2 Ω in heavy traffic, and it will do the job well.

JL Audio JD500/1 FAQ

Which subwoofer suits the JL Audio JD500/1?

A single 4 Ω driver rated around 250–300 W RMS, such as JL's 8W3v3-4 or 10W0v3-4, makes good use of the 250 W it delivers at 4 Ω. At 2 Ω it can drive two 4 Ω subwoofers in parallel at about 250 W each, or one dual 4 Ω driver wired in parallel.

How much power does the JD500/1 make at 12.5 V?

JL rates it at 225 W into 4 Ω, 300 W into 3 Ω and 400 W into 2 Ω at 12.5 V, against 250 W, 350 W and 500 W at 14.4 V. Expect figures nearer the lower set whenever the car's voltage sags.

Does the JL Audio JD500/1 have a bass remote?

It works with JL's optional RBC-1 remote bass control, sold separately at ₹6,990 MRP, which adjusts the subwoofer level from the driver's seat. The amplifier itself also has a 45 Hz bass EQ adjustable from 0 to +12 dB.
