JL Audio C1-650 SE Review: The Silk Edition and What ₹3,000 More Buys
Updated: Oct 6
The JL Audio C1-650 SE is the Silk Edition of JL's entry 6.5-inch (165 mm) component set, pairing mineral-filled polypropylene woofers with a larger 25 mm (1-inch) silk-dome tweeter in place of the standard set's 19 mm aluminium dome. JL rates its response at 48 Hz to 21 kHz, and its shared C1 table gives 50 W RMS into 4 Ω and 91 dB sensitivity. At ₹19,990 MRP it costs ₹3,000 more than the standard C1-650. It suits buyers who find aluminium tweeters too bright and want a smoother top end without paying C2 prices; our C1-650 SE product page has the details.

What you need to know
SE stands for Silk Edition (JL SKU 99061, introduced around mid-2024): a 1-inch silk-dome tweeter replaces the standard C1-650's 19 mm aluminium dome.
Power, sensitivity and mounting figures are listed as shared with the C1-650: 50 W RMS, 91 dB, 53 mm of depth and a 128 mm hole.
JL lists a larger 30 mm woofer voice coil and the catalogue photo shows a grey cone, so the woofer appears to differ too.
Independent reviews are scarce: a JL-sponsored installer praises it, and the only buyer rating we found says it needs an amplifier.

JL lists the SE as a variant on Garmin Singapore's C1 Car System page, with its own figures only for frequency response, tweeter size and voice coil; the other rows are shared with the standard C1-650. The 2026 Indian catalogue prints no power or impedance for this model, so those come from JL's shared table and our store listing, which also gives the crossover size. Garmin's table shows a generic aluminium-dome tweeter entry, but JL's feature text, the Silk Edition name and dealer listings all describe silk, which we've followed.
What Silk Edition actually changes
The headline change is the tweeter. Silk domes are generally chosen for a smoother, less forward top end than aluminium. The SE's dome is also larger, 25 mm against 19 mm, and a bigger dome can usually play a little lower. JL rates the SE to 21 kHz rather than 24 kHz, but most adults hear little above 16 kHz or so, so the lower figure costs nothing audible.
The woofer appears to change as well. JL's table lists a 30 mm voice coil for the SE against 25 mm for the standard set, and the Indian catalogue photo shows a grey textured cone with an orange label rather than the familiar yellow C1 cone.
Our store listing also shows a larger crossover, about 64 x 49 x 28 mm against roughly 50 x 23 x 34 mm for the standard set. The specifications we have don't describe its filter design or any tweeter level control, so don't assume it adds adjustment.
Head-unit power or an amplifier: the evidence is mixed
On paper the SE is as easy to drive as the standard C1-650: both are rated at 91 dB with a recommended 10–75 W per channel. The reviews below disagree about factory power, so our advice is to budget for a modest amplifier. A silk tweeter's smoothness matters most at higher volume, which is where a head unit's built-in amplifier starts to clip.
The JL Audio JD400/4 delivers 60 W per channel at 12.5 V and 75 W at 14.4 V, inside JL's recommended range. Bigger JL amplifiers such as the JL Audio HD600/4, rated at 150 W per channel, offer far more than this set can use.
Reviews of the JL Audio C1-650 SE: thin so far
Independent feedback is scarce for a model that appeared around mid-2024. Here's everything we found when we checked in October 2026.
The fullest coverage is a Car Audio Fabrication blog post from June 11, 2024, with an embedded video; its author thanks JL Audio for sponsoring the channel, so treat it as promotional. It praises smooth, silky highs, an easy drop-in fit and strong value, but it is very short and offers no measurements or criticism. A TikTok clip from the same creator, of which we saw only the caption, states the sponsorship and pitches the SE as an easy replacement for factory speakers that sounds great on factory power.
The only buyer rating we found is a single 4.0 out of 5 on eBay. That reviewer says the set sounds good once given amplifier power but is underwhelming on head-unit power alone. One rating proves little, but it runs against the sponsored view on factory power.
OnlineCarStereo lists the SE with no customer reviews yet; its dealer copy explains the name as Silk Edition, with silk domes replacing aluminium for smoother, less fatiguing highs. In India, the Mumbai retailer Motorogue lists it at the same ₹19,990 MRP as our catalogue, also without reviews, and calls it a special edition.
For context, the standard set has a longer and uniformly positive review history, covered in our C1-650 review, though it uses a different tweeter. If you own an SE, we'd like to hear how it has worked out.
C1-650 SE vs C1-650 and C2-650
Against the standard C1-650 (₹16,990 MRP), the ₹3,000 extra buys a 25 mm silk dome instead of a 19 mm aluminium one, a woofer with a larger voice coil and a bigger crossover. The shared power, sensitivity, depth and cutout figures are identical, so woofer fitment is the same. What you give up is track record: the standard set has years of positive owner reviews, while the SE has almost none.
The JL Audio C2-650 (₹32,990 MRP) is the next silk-dome option up, at ₹13,000 more. Its tweeter is smaller at 19 mm, but its crossover offers three tweeter level settings and segmented air-core inductors, it handles 60 W RMS (15–100 W recommended), and it has a long review history. It also needs more room: 62 mm of depth and a 141 mm hole, against 53 mm and 128 mm for the SE.
Our honest view: the SE is the cheapest way to get a silk tweeter in a JL component set, and if bright treble bothers you, that's a real gain. If you want a long track record and tweeter level adjustment, the C2-650 remains the safer buy; for a first component set on a tight budget, the standard C1-650 has the stronger record for less money.
Who should pay the extra for the SE
Pay the extra if you're sensitive to bright, forward treble, your tweeters will have to fire fairly directly at you, or you do long drives and value a relaxed top end. It also makes sense if you're adding a small amplifier, which the only buyer review suggests it needs.
Save your money if you want the reassurance of a well-reviewed product, you plan to run it on head-unit power alone, or your factory tweeter locations are small. In those cases the standard C1-650 or, with a bigger budget, the C2-650 is the better choice. For a coaxial alternative, see the C1-650x.
Installation notes: tweeters, crossovers and doors
The 1-inch tweeter is larger than the standard C1's, and the data we have doesn't give its housing dimensions, so check your factory tweeter location before ordering; a small factory pod may need a custom mount. Angling the tweeters towards the opposite seat usually gives the most even left-right balance.
The crossover is a bigger box than the standard set's, so plan a dry, secure spot for it behind a kick panel or under the dash rather than low in the door, where monsoon water collects. The woofers need a 128 mm hole and 53 mm of depth, which suits most doors with an adapter ring, and damping the door skin firms up the midbass.

Price, warranty and where to buy
The JL Audio C1-650 SE carries an MRP of ₹19,990 in the 2026 Indian catalogue. VA3 Car Studio often sells below MRP, and the current price is on our C1-650 SE component set listing. Every set we sell is a genuine JL Audio product. Published warranty terms for the SE differ between sources, so ask us to confirm the warranty that applies before you buy.
Where we land
The JL Audio C1-650 SE is a sensible idea: JL's entry component set with a larger silk tweeter for buyers who want a gentler top end, at ₹3,000 over the standard version. The catch is evidence: independent reviews are almost non-existent, and the one buyer we found wanted an amplifier. If smooth treble is your priority and you'll add a small amplifier, it deserves a place on your shortlist; otherwise the standard C1-650 has the better-documented record for less.
JL Audio C1-650 SE FAQ
What does SE mean in the JL Audio C1-650 SE?
SE stands for Silk Edition. JL replaced the standard C1-650's 19 mm aluminium-dome tweeter with a 25 mm (1-inch) silk dome, and the model appeared around mid-2024.
Does the C1-650 SE need an amplifier?
