JL Audio C1-650x Review: The Drop-In 6.5-Inch Coaxial, Fitment and Owner Verdicts
Updated: Oct 6
The JL Audio C1-650x is the 6.5-inch (165 mm) coaxial in JL's C1 range, designed as a straight swap for factory door speakers. A mineral-filled polypropylene woofer carries a 19 mm aluminium-dome tweeter, each speaker handles 50 W RMS into 4 Ω at 90.5 dB sensitivity, and it needs only 53 mm of mounting depth. Its 2026 Indian MRP is ₹13,990, ₹3,000 below the C1-650 component set. It suits owners who want a clear improvement on the factory head unit with no custom work, and the full listing is on our C1-650x product page.

The short version
Built for drop-in fitting: JL claims near-universal fit with minimal tweeter protrusion and puts two multi-application adapter brackets in the box.
At 90.5 dB it works on head-unit power, and JL recommends 10–75 W per channel if you add an amplifier.
An onboard second-order high-pass filter protects the tweeter, so there is no separate crossover to hide.
It is the best-documented C1 model in our research: owners praise clean, crisp sound and value, and the main reservation is modest bass.

What drop-in really means
JL designed the C1-650x to go straight into factory locations. Besides the two adapter brackets, the box holds mounting screws, speed clips, connectors and quarter-inch thread-forming screws, and because the tweeter's high-pass filter is built in, there's nothing else to mount. The shallow 53 mm depth and modest 128 mm hole help too.
In practice, three things decide how easy your install is: the factory bracket, the door's depth and the speaker connector. Many factory 6.5-inch speakers sit on plastic carriers with their own screw pattern, so whether JL's brackets suit or a vehicle-specific ring is needed depends on the car. As the owner reports below show, the speaker is simple; the car decides the rest.
Mind the plug as well. A harness adapter for your car's connector costs little and keeps the factory wiring uncut, which helps if you ever want to refit the stock speakers or sell the car.
On a factory head unit, and with a small amplifier
At 90.5 dB, the C1-650x is efficient enough to sound clearly better than stock on head-unit power, a point owners make directly. What no head-unit-powered door coaxial does well is deep bass at volume, so treat the low end as something a subwoofer will supply later.
The classic next step is one four-channel amplifier for the front pair and a subwoofer. The JL Audio JD400/4 supports three-channel operation: two channels give the C1-650x 75 W each and the other two bridge to 200 W into 4 Ω, both at 14.4 V. At 12.5 V, a better guide when the voltage sags at idle with the AC on, those figures fall to 60 W and 180 W. That suits a sub such as the JL Audio 12W0v3-4 (₹18,490 MRP, 300 W RMS). The amplifier also accepts speaker-level signals, so a factory touchscreen can stay.
Owner and reviewer feedback on the JL Audio C1-650x
This is the best-documented C1 model in our research, which makes the consensus more reliable. Here's what we found when we checked in October 2026.
Reviews on Sonic Electronix dated March 2020 to May 2026 split 74% five-star, 24% four-star and 2% three-star, with none lower; the total isn't shown, and the 2024–2026 reviews carry verified badges. Owners praise clean, crisp sound, good value, an easy install with the included hardware, a big step up from factory speakers and enough efficiency for factory or aftermarket head units. Several note limited bass, though some accept that as normal for a coaxial, and one struggled with bracket fitment in a 2014 Subaru Impreza.
Seven reviews from November 2019 to October 2025 on OnlineCarStereo are all positive, citing noticeably better sound than factory, easy installation that works with the factory stereo, good looks, build quality and value. One pair went into the rear deck of a 2017 Honda Accord. None carries a verified-purchase label, and the retailer says it moderates reviews to remove unproven, biased negative comments, so negatives may be under-represented.
eBay's catalogue page shows three ratings, all five-star, from March 2019 to January 2025, each review marked as a verified purchase. Buyers mention clearly better sound than factory, a straightforward install with no modification, and good construction and fit.
A Bronco6G forum thread from January 2022 has a member confirming that the C1-650x fits the kick panels of the 2021-on Ford Bronco with its factory premium system, and members who swapped all their speakers for C1 models were happy with the change. The catch was the commonly sold mounting adapter, which adds height and eats into clearance; members discussed making thinner custom adapters.
Lastly, a US JL dealer's C1-versus-C2 comparison covers the whole series rather than this model and, as a seller's blog, is promotional. It calls the C1 line very efficient on head-unit power and better with a small amplifier.
C1-650x vs C2-650x, and the C1-650 component set
The C2-650x (₹22,990 MRP) is the obvious step up, ₹9,000 more. It swaps the aluminium tweeter for a 19 mm silk dome, raises power handling to 60 W RMS with a 15–100 W recommended range, and is rated at 91.0 dB, half a decibel above the C1-650x.
Where the C1-650x wins is installation. It needs 9 mm less depth and a 13 mm smaller hole than the C2-650x, and JL even quotes a deeper low-frequency limit for it (48 Hz versus 59 Hz). On a head unit the two play at much the same level, so the C2's silk top end and extra headroom mainly pay off once an amplifier is involved. Our JL Audio C2-650 review explains what the C2 range's silk tweeters bring.
Within the C1 family, the C1-650 component set costs ₹3,000 more and moves the tweeter up to the dash or A-pillar, lifting the soundstage; it is the better front-door choice if you can mount tweeters, with the C1-650x then making a natural rear pair. If your doors only take 5.25-inch speakers, look at the C1-525x.
Who should buy the C1-650x, and who shouldn't
Buy it if you want the simplest worthwhile upgrade over factory 6.5-inch speakers, you're keeping the factory head unit for now, or you need a rear pair to match a C1 or C2 front stage. It's also the sensible pick for shallow doors.
Look elsewhere if you want a high, wide soundstage, which a component set does better, or punchy bass without a subwoofer, which no door coaxial delivers. If a powerful amplifier is part of the plan from day one, the C2-650x's higher rating makes more sense.
Fitment notes for Indian doors
Before ordering, measure the depth behind the factory speaker with the window wound down, check whether it sits on a plastic carrier, and note the connector type. Some cars sold in India will need a vehicle-specific ring rather than JL's brackets; keep any ring no thicker than necessary, given the clearance problem raised on the Bronco forum.
Door interiors get very hot in an Indian summer and wet in the monsoon. Polypropylene cones cope with both better than paper, but fit a foam baffle or water shield behind the speaker anyway and seal the frame to the door so air can't leak around it. Damping the door skin around the opening is the cheapest way to firm up midbass.

Final word
The JL Audio C1-650x is the easy, well-reviewed way to replace factory 6.5-inch speakers: efficient on head-unit power, shallow, supplied with adapter brackets, and consistently praised for clean, crisp sound and value. Its bass is modest, as with any door coaxial, and fitment still depends on your car's brackets. Add a small amplifier and a subwoofer later, and it grows with the system.
JL Audio C1-650x FAQ
Does the JL Audio C1-650x need an amplifier?
No. At 90.5 dB it runs well on factory or aftermarket head-unit power, as owners confirm. An amplifier within JL's recommended 10–75 W per channel adds headroom and makes adding a subwoofer straightforward.
Are adapter brackets included with the C1-650x?
Yes. JL includes two multi-application adapter brackets along with screws, speed clips and connectors. Some cars still need a vehicle-specific ring or harness, so check your car's mounting before ordering.
Why do some owners say the C1-650x is light on bass?
It is a 6.5-inch coaxial rated down to 48 Hz, and in a door it can't produce deep bass at volume. Several reviewers accept that as normal for a coaxial, and a subwoofer is the usual fix.
