JL Audio C1-650 Review: JL's Entry Component Set, and When the C2 Is Worth Double

Updated: Oct 6

The JL Audio C1-650 is JL's entry 6.5-inch (165 mm) component set: two mineral-filled polypropylene woofers, two 19 mm aluminium-dome tweeters and a pair of compact outboard crossovers, rated at 50 W RMS into 4 Ω with 91 dB sensitivity. At ₹16,990 MRP it is the less expensive of the two C1 component sets in the 2026 Indian catalogue, and it costs roughly half as much as the C2-650. It suits drivers who want the imaging of separate tweeters without stretching to C2 money. You can see the set on our C1-650 component system page.

JL Audio C1-650 6.5-inch two-way component speaker system

Key takeaways

  • Separate tweeters and crossovers let you mount the treble high, on the A-pillar, sail panel or dash, which no coaxial can do.

  • Its 91 dB sensitivity matches the C2-650, so it is just as easy to drive from a head unit.

  • On paper it reaches deeper (48 Hz) and needs less mounting depth (53 mm) than the C2-650, which costs nearly twice as much.

  • Owner reviews are few but uniformly positive, praising clear, smooth tweeters and an easy fit.

Specifications come from JL Audio's component-system table on Garmin Singapore's C1 Car System page, which also covers the C1-650 SE and the 6x9 C1-690, and from the 2026 Indian catalogue, which agrees on 50 W RMS and 4 Ω. The crossover dimensions are from our store listing.

What separate tweeters actually buy you

A coaxial puts its tweeter in the middle of the woofer, usually low in the door, so the treble arrives at knee height. Splitting the set lets the 19 mm tweeters go up on the A-pillars, sail panels or dash corners, close to ear level, while the woofers stay in the doors. The stereo image then sits on the dashboard, which is the main reason to choose the C1-650 over the cheaper C1-650x.

The crossovers send lower frequencies to the woofer and only the highs to the tweeter. At about 50 x 23 x 34 mm according to our listing, they're easy to hide behind a kick panel or inside the dash. The specifications we have list no filter slopes or tweeter level control, so don't count on tuning options at the crossover.

Aluminium domes tend to sound bright and detailed, so aim the tweeters across the car toward the opposite seat rather than straight at your ears.

Head-unit power first, amplifier later

At 91 dB, the C1-650 is as efficient as the C2-650 and slightly more so than the C1-650x coaxial (90.5 dB), so it is a realistic first upgrade on an existing head unit.

JL recommends 10–75 W per channel, and an amplifier is how you get more volume without strain. The JL Audio JD400/4 delivers 60 W per channel at 12.5 V and 75 W at 14.4 V, and it accepts speaker-level signals from a factory head unit. For a subwoofer channel in the same chassis, the five-channel JL Audio JD700/5 (₹69,990 MRP) adds 180 W at 4 Ω to four 75 W channels.

Processing often brings the bigger gain. A set with tweeters and woofers in different places benefits from time alignment and equalisation far more than a coaxial does, and our guides to why a DSP matters and setting one up explain the steps.

What owners say about the C1-650

The trail is modest but positive. Here's what we found when we checked in October 2026.

On eBay's product page, six ratings dated October 2018 to June 2026 average 5.0 out of 5, all of them five-star, and every review is marked as a verified purchase. Owners praise very clear, smooth tweeters, good definition, an easy installation and the way the set blends with a subwoofer; one reckoned the bass reaches down to roughly 45–50 Hz.

Five reviews from April 2023 to August 2025 on OnlineCarStereo describe smooth, clean sound across the range, an easy fit and no distortion at high volume, with one owner pushing it to around 90% on the volume control. They call it a dependable entry-level set that beats cheaper alternatives. The site shows no overall rating and moderates its reviews, so read the tally as a favourable sample.

A Bronco6G forum thread from January 2022 is mostly about the C1-650x coaxial in Ford Bronco kick panels, but one member who switched to the C1-650 valued mounting the tweeters separately. The thread also warns that protruding component tweeters can interfere with factory speaker grilles.

A US JL dealer's C1-versus-C2 comparison covers the series rather than this model, and as a seller's blog based on in-store demos it is promotional. It calls the C1 line very efficient, good on head-unit power and better with a small amplifier, and designed to drop into factory locations.

JL Audio C1-650 vs C2-650: where the extra ₹16,000 goes

The JL Audio C2-650 costs ₹32,990, ₹16,000 more. Both are 6.5-inch two-way component sets with 19 mm tweeters, mineral-filled polypropylene cones, 25 mm voice coils and 91 dB sensitivity, so on a head unit they play equally loud. The main differences lie in the tweeter, the crossover and the power rating.

The C2's silk dome is generally chosen for a gentler, less forward top end than aluminium. Its much larger crossover (85 x 37 x 120 mm) offers three tweeter level settings and uses segmented air-core inductors, and it is rated at 60 W RMS (15–100 W recommended) against the C1's 50 W (10–75 W).

On paper the C1-650 wins some rounds: JL rates it deeper, 48 Hz against 59 Hz, and it needs 53 mm of depth against 62 mm and a 128 mm hole against the 141 mm in our C2-650 listing. In a shallow door, those 9 mm can decide which set fits without spacers.

Our honest take: on head-unit power, or with a budget that must also cover damping and installation, the C1-650 is the smarter buy. The C2-650 earns its premium with an amplifier, or when the tweeter location makes the highs too bright and you need its level settings and silk dome.

In between sits the C1-650 SE (₹19,990 MRP), which brings a 1-inch silk-dome tweeter for ₹3,000 more, though with far less owner feedback. If you'd rather keep a factory-style layout, the C1-650x coaxial costs ₹13,990.

Who it's for, and who should look elsewhere

Buy the C1-650 if you want a real component front stage for little more than a good coaxial costs, your doors are shallow, or you're starting on head-unit power with an amplifier planned for later.

Look elsewhere if you know you'll want to adjust tweeter level, you're sensitive to bright treble and can't place the tweeters well, or you expect strong midbass from the doors alone. The first points to the C2-650, the second to the C2-650 or the C1-650 SE; the last calls for a subwoofer such as the JL Audio 10W0v3-4.

Installing a component set in an Indian car

Tweeter location comes first, and factory tweeter positions in dash corners or A-pillars vary in size and angle. JL lists flush and surface mounting for this tweeter, with a flush-mount hole of about 37 mm (1.46 in) and a surface housing about 43 mm (1.71 in) across. Check how far a surface-mounted tweeter protrudes before closing a factory grille over it, the issue raised in that Bronco thread.

The woofers need a 128 mm hole and 53 mm of depth, which suits most door cavities, though factory brackets often call for an adapter ring. Damp the door skin while the panel is off; in a component set the woofer does all the midbass work, and a rattling door wastes it.

Mount the crossovers somewhere dry, not low inside the door where monsoon water collects, and fix them so they can't rattle on rough roads. VA3 Car Studio offers professional installation in Ghaziabad if you'd rather have the tweeters aimed and the crossovers hidden for you.

C1-650 price and where to buy

The JL Audio C1-650 has an MRP of ₹16,990 in the 2026 Indian catalogue. VA3 Car Studio often sells below MRP, and today's figure is on our C1-650 6.5-inch component set listing. Every set we supply is a genuine JL Audio product.

Our verdict

The JL Audio C1-650 is the sensible way into a JL component front stage: easy to drive, shallow, with crossovers compact enough to tuck away neatly, and well liked by its reviewers. It gives up the C2-650's silk tweeter, has no tweeter level settings listed, and won't produce deep midbass on its own. Fitted with care, and later given an amplifier, it covers the essentials for about half the C2's price.

JL Audio C1-650 FAQ

Is the JL Audio C1-650 good on a factory head unit?

Yes, within limits. Its 91 dB sensitivity matches the C2-650, so it plays at a useful volume on head-unit power. An amplifier giving 50–75 W per channel adds headroom and keeps the tweeters clean when you turn it up.

What is the difference between the C1-650 and the C1-650 SE?

The SE, or Silk Edition, replaces the standard set's 19 mm aluminium-dome tweeter with a 1-inch silk dome and costs ₹3,000 more. Power handling, sensitivity and mounting dimensions are listed as the same, but the SE has far less owner feedback so far.

Should I buy the C1-650 or the C1-650x?

Buy the C1-650 component set if you can mount tweeters higher up, because that lifts the sound to dashboard level. The C1-650x coaxial costs ₹3,000 less and drops into a single opening, which suits rear doors or a simpler install.
