Updated: Oct 6

The JL Audio JD400/4 is a compact four-channel Class D amplifier rated at 75 W x 4 into 4 Ω or 100 W x 4 into 2 Ω at 14.4 V, bridgeable to 200 W x 2, in a 242 x 190 x 53 mm chassis. At ₹39,990 MRP it is the only four-channel JD amplifier in JL's 2026 Indian catalogue, priced below the five-channel JD700/5. It suits buyers who want a JL component front stage and rear speakers properly powered, often from a factory head unit, with power ratings published at real-world voltage. You can see today's offer on our JD400/4 four-channel amplifier page.

JL Audio JD400/4 four-channel Class D car amplifier

Key takeaways

  • JL publishes power at 12.5 V as well as 14.4 V: 60 W x 4 into 4 Ω at the lower voltage, closer to what some cars supply at idle with the AC running.

  • Dual-range differential-balanced RCA inputs accept speaker-level signals, so a factory touchscreen's speaker outputs can feed it through an adapter lead rather than a line output converter.

  • It suits JL's C-series components neatly, and bridging or three-channel operation can add a modest subwoofer.

  • Owner feedback is strong and long-running; the only complaint we found was one owner's wish for clearer instructions.

Figures come from JL's JD400/4 owner's manual (a JL document hosted by a US retailer), our store listing and the 2026 Indian catalogue, whose 75 W and 100 W ratings match JL's 14.4 V figures. The US manual extends the warranty to three years when an authorised dealer installs the amp with JL's power wiring kit; ask us which terms apply in India.

Rated at 14.4 V and at 12.5 V

Most amplifier makers quote power only at 14.4 V, roughly what a healthy charging system delivers on the move. JL adds a 12.5 V rating, closer to where a car's voltage can sag with the engine off, or idling in Delhi traffic with the AC, blower and headlamps on. Here the JD400/4 falls from 75 W to 60 W per channel into 4 Ω. A 20% cut sounds large, but it amounts to about 1 dB, a difference few listeners can pick out.

Current demand is modest too. JL specifies a 40 A fuse, which points to a worst-case draw most healthy cars can supply through a properly sized cable, and the Class D output stage turns most of what it draws into output rather than heat.

Inputs built for factory head units

The differential-balanced inputs switch between a 200 mV–2 V range for RCA pre-outs and an 800 mV–8 V range that takes speaker-level signals, so a factory touchscreen's speaker outputs can feed the amp through a speaker-to-RCA adapter lead. Balanced inputs also reject the ground noise behind alternator whine, a common headache in factory integrations. JL's documentation that we have doesn't mention automatic turn-on for this model, so plan a switched 12 V remote feed if the head unit has no remote output.

Some factory systems apply their own EQ or split the frequency range across speakers. In those cars, an integration processor such as JL's FiX 86 (₹69,990 MRP), which corrects and sums factory signals, can sit in front of the amp.

Speakers it suits, and the bridging options

JL's C-series components are natural partners. The C2-650 is rated at 60 W RMS, exactly what the JD400/4 delivers per channel at 12.5 V, and the C3-650 at 75 W RMS matches its 14.4 V rating. The cheaper C1-650, at 50 W RMS, works too if the gains are set with care.

Bridged, the amp makes 200 W x 2 into 4 Ω, and our store listing also mentions three-channel operation: two channels for the front speakers and a bridged pair for a subwoofer such as JL's 250 W 8W3v3-4. JL's specification describes the 50–500 Hz filter without splitting it by channel pair, so if the fronts need high-pass while the sub needs low-pass, ask us to confirm the setup or add a DSP.

What owners and reviewers say about the JL Audio JD400/4

This amplifier has a solid trail of owner feedback. When we checked in October 2026, Sonic Electronix showed reviews dated August 2020 to April 2026, most from 2024 and 2025 and most marked as verified purchases. Ratings were 94% five-star and 6% three-star, with category scores of 4.9 for durability, value, features and design, and 5.0 for usability.

Those owners describe clean, detailed sound with plenty of power and no distortion at high volume, an easy install with simple controls, a chassis compact enough to fit easily, and strong value for a JL amp that pairs well with quality speakers and subwoofers. The only criticism recorded was one reviewer's wish for clearer instructions.

OnlineCarStereo lists eight reviews from March 2021 to April 2024 that echo those points: clean power from a compact amp, crisp sound on front and rear speakers, and performance beyond expectations for the money, with some buyers citing good past experience of JL. The site says it moderates reviews and may remove unproven negative comments, so treat it as a favourable sample. JL's own listing on Garmin's store describes a four-channel amp with high-speed switching, a 12 dB per octave filter and a two-year warranty; that is manufacturer information, not a review.

JD400/4 vs JD700/5, XDM400/4 and Zapco's HB 104D II

The JD700/5 (₹69,990 MRP) has identical ratings on its four main channels and adds a subwoofer channel of 180 W into 4 Ω or 300 W into 2 Ω, in a 301 mm chassis. Pairing a JD400/4 with a JD500/1 monoblock costs ₹75,980 at MRP but gives the subwoofer up to 500 W into 2 Ω, at the cost of two mounting spots and more wiring.

JL's XDM400/4 carries the same 75 W and 100 W ratings at ₹89,990, adding marine-grade construction and separate filters for channels 1–2 and 3–4. Unless the amp will live somewhere wet, or you need those separate filters, the JD400/4 is the better buy. Zapco's HB 104D II claims 4 x 100 W into 4 Ω for ₹22,990 in a smaller box, but without low-voltage ratings or owner reviews.

Who should buy it, and who shouldn't

Buy the JD400/4 if you want a proven, compact four-channel for a JL component front stage and rear speakers, especially fed from a factory head unit, and you value published low-voltage ratings and a real owner track record.

Look elsewhere if you want a subwoofer channel in the same box, where the JD700/5 fits better, need marine-grade protection, or want the most watts per rupee, where Zapco's HB amps claim more for less.

Installation notes for Indian cars

The JD400/4 is larger than Zapco's HB amps, so under-seat mounting depends on the car; measure first. A boot side panel, the rear-seat back or a false floor usually works, with space left around the chassis and away from direct sun through the rear glass. Its LED clipping indicator rings help set levels accurately, which matters with 60 W speakers on 75 W channels.

Fit an inline fuse close to the battery (JL lists 40 A for this amp), run a cable gauge suited to the length, and earth the amp to bare metal with a short lead. On rough roads, secure the cables so they can't chafe against seat rails or trim edges. VA3 Car Studio installs JL amplifiers at our Ghaziabad studio.

Price and where to buy

The 2026 Indian catalogue lists the JL Audio JD400/4 at an MRP of ₹39,990. The catalogue and our store call it the JD400/4D, but it is the same amplifier JL names the JD400/4. VA3 Car Studio often sells below MRP, so check the current price on our JD400/4 product page. Every unit we sell is a genuine JL Audio product, distributed in India by Supreme Audiotek Pvt. Ltd., New Delhi.

JL Audio JD400/4 four-channel amplifier - another view

The bottom line

The JD400/4 isn't the most powerful four-channel for the money, but JL publishes its output at real-world voltage as well as 14.4 V, the inputs accept factory speaker-level signals through an adapter lead, and owners have rated it highly for years. For a JL component front stage, it is the natural choice.

JL Audio JD400/4 FAQ

Can the JL Audio JD400/4 connect to a factory head unit?

Yes. Its differential-balanced RCA inputs have an 800 mV to 8 V range that accepts speaker-level signals, so a factory head unit's speaker outputs can feed it through a speaker-to-RCA adapter lead. JL's documentation we have doesn't mention automatic turn-on, so plan a switched 12 V remote feed.

How much power does the JD400/4 make at low voltage?

JL rates it at 60 W x 4 into 4 Ω and 90 W x 4 into 2 Ω at 12.5 V, against 75 W and 100 W at 14.4 V. The drop at 4 Ω is about 1 dB, which is hard to hear in practice.

Which speakers pair best with the JL Audio JD400/4?

JL's C-series components are natural partners: the C2-650 is rated at 60 W RMS and the C3-650 at 75 W RMS, both 4 Ω. Any 4 Ω set rated around 50–100 W RMS works if the gains are set carefully.
