JL Audio C6-650 Review: Active vs Passive, and Which C6 Set to Buy
Updated: Oct 6
The JL Audio C6-650 is a 6.5-inch (165 mm) two-way component set from JL's C6 series, the line directly below the flagship C7, pairing C6-650cw woofers with 1-inch silk-dome tweeters. It's rated at 100 W continuous into 4 Ω, and it comes in two versions with two Indian MRPs: ₹1,24,990 for the Passive set with crossovers and ₹1,14,990 for the Active version meant for DSP systems. That choice matters more than any spec, so this review explains what separates them, what each needs, and who should buy which. Both are in our store: the C6-650 Passive product page and the C6-650 Active product page.

Key takeaways
Same woofers and tweeters in both versions; the Passive adds crossover networks with tweeter level adjustment, while the Active likely leaves them out for a DSP to do the job.
The Passive set runs from one amplifier channel per side; the Active needs four DSP outputs and four amplifier channels.
JL's 2023 manual recommends 30–100 W of amplifier power, a narrower range than the 25–150 W some listings quote.
We found no owner or professional reviews we could verify for either version.

Figures come from the official C6-650 manual (2023 revision), JL's C6-650cw woofer manual, our store listings and the 2026 Indian catalogue, whose bandwidth figures are the woofer's. Several listings, ours included, quote 25–150 W of recommended power; we'd plan around the manual's 30–100 W. The woofer depth is a listed figure rather than one the manual labels.
Active or Passive: what's actually different
Both versions are built around the same drivers. The Passive set adds two crossover networks that split the signal between woofer and tweeter, with a tweeter level control spanning +2 dB to −4 dB, so it runs from one amplifier channel per side and needs no software to set up.
The Active version likely omits those networks. JL's catalogue doesn't spell out its contents, but our listing describes it as C6-650cw woofers with C6-100ct tweeters and no passive crossovers, which is what an active set normally means, and its ₹10,000 lower MRP is consistent with the missing parts. Please confirm the box contents with us before ordering.
Without crossovers, every driver needs its own DSP output and amplifier channel, four in all for a left-right set. The DSP then sets crossover points, slopes, time alignment and EQ for each driver separately. JL's woofer is rated to 6 kHz and the tweeter from 3 kHz, so an active crossover between those points keeps both inside their published limits, with steep slopes giving the most freedom.
What each version needs around it
The Passive set wants an amplifier, not head-unit power: 30–100 W per channel by JL's manual, with 87.37 dB sensitivity. A four-channel amplifier such as the XDM400/4, rated at 75 W per channel into 4 Ω, sits inside that range and leaves two channels for rear speakers. With a factory touchscreen, a converter such as the LoC22 turns the head unit's speaker outputs into line-level signals with automatic turn-on.
The Active version needs a processor as well as four channels. The simplest route is a DSP amplifier: JL's VX600/6i has six channels with an integrated DSP, enough for this set plus two more. Our guide to setting up a DSP explains what the tuning involves, and it's worth reading before choosing the Active version to save ₹10,000 at MRP, because a processor costs more than the saving.
What owners and reviewers say about the JL Audio C6-650
Independent reviews are scarce. When we checked in October 2026, we found none we could verify for either version: OnlineCarStereo's page for the set showed zero reviews, and two other US retailers' listings showed none.
Crutchfield hosts a customer-review page for the C6-650 and another for the C6-650cw woofer sold on its own, which covers the woofer rather than the complete set. Neither page's content would load for us, so we can't tell you what they say.
What remains is JL's own description, which is promotional: the catalogue says the C6 series is born from the same DNA as the C7, combining a smooth, transparent silk-dome tweeter with a top-flight woofer, and our own listing promises crisp, powerful midbass with very low distortion; neither is an independent assessment. If you own a C6-650, we'd like to hear how it performs.
C6-650 vs the C7 drivers, C3-650 and C2-650
Above it, an active C7 two-way built from two C7-650cw woofers and two C7-100ct tweeters costs ₹4,99,960 at MRP. The C7 woofer takes 125 W against the C6's 100 W and has 5 mm of linear excursion against 3.75 mm, and the C7 tweeter's ceramic-coated aluminium dome reaches 30 kHz. The C6-650 Active costs less than one C7 woofer.
Below it, the C3-650 (₹79,990) is rated at 75 W with 90 dB sensitivity, so it's easier to drive but handles less power, and it can also be fitted as a coaxial. Our C2-650 review covers the 60 W, 91 dB set at ₹32,990, the better match for modest amplifiers. For a passive three-way from the same family, the C6-653 adds 2.75-inch midranges for ₹75,000 more than the Passive two-way.
Who should buy which version
Choose the Passive if you want a complete set that works with a conventional four-channel amplifier, like being able to adjust the tweeter level without software, and might add a DSP later for time alignment.
Choose the Active if you already own or plan a DSP amplifier, want per-driver control of crossovers and delay, and have an installer who can tune it. Look at other sets if you'll run from head-unit power alone; the C6-650's 30–100 W recommendation points firmly to an amplifier.
Installation notes for Indian cars
The woofer needs a 139 mm opening and, by the listed figure, 66 mm of depth, plus room for a grille that our listing says protrudes 25 mm. Check window glass travel and trim clearance; many factory openings need an adapter bracket. Seal and damp the door while it's open, since a leaky door wastes the midbass a 6.5-inch woofer can make.
Mount the Passive crossovers somewhere dry, such as under a seat or in a kick panel, not inside the wet part of the door. The tweeters need a 47 mm hole for flush mounting, or the supplied surface housings, and a pillar or sail-panel position gives the best stereo image. Price and where to buy
The 2026 Indian catalogue lists the JL Audio C6-650 at ₹1,24,990 for the Passive set and ₹1,14,990 for the Active version. We often sell both below MRP; see today's prices on the Passive set's page and the Active set's page. Both are genuine JL Audio products, distributed in India by Supreme Audiotek Pvt. Ltd., New Delhi.

Final thoughts
The C6-650 gives you JL's C6 woofer and silk-dome tweeter in whichever form suits your system. The Passive set is the straightforward choice for an amplifier-based upgrade; the Active version only makes sense once a DSP is part of the plan. With no verifiable reviews yet, you're buying on JL's published figures and the C6 line's position just below the C7, so let us check fitment and talk through amplification before you commit.
JL Audio C6-650 FAQ
What is the difference between the JL Audio C6-650 Active and Passive?
The Passive set includes two crossover networks with tweeter level adjustment and runs from one amplifier channel per side. The Active version likely omits the crossovers, so each woofer and tweeter needs its own DSP output and amplifier channel.
Why is the Active C6-650 cheaper than the Passive?
The likely reason is that it leaves out the two passive crossover networks, which is what an active set normally means. JL's catalogue doesn't state the contents, so confirm with us before ordering.
What amplifier does the C6-650 need?
JL's 2023 manual recommends 30–100 W per channel, which a four-channel amplifier such as the XDM400/4 covers for the Passive set. The Active version needs four amplifier channels plus a DSP, or a DSP amplifier such as the VX600/6i.
