JL Audio C6-653 Review: JL's Passive Three-Way Component Set
Updated: Oct 6
The JL Audio C6-653 is a complete 6.5-inch (165 mm) three-way component set from JL's C6 series: two C6-650cw woofers, two 2.75-inch C6-275cm midranges, two 1-inch silk-dome tweeters and two passive crossovers. It's rated at 100 W continuous into 4 Ω with 87.37 dB sensitivity, and its Indian MRP of ₹1,99,990 puts it at the top of the C6 range in the 2026 catalogue. It suits buyers who want a dedicated midrange without building an active system, and who have room in the dash or pillars to mount one. Today's price is on our C6-653 three-way product page.

At a glance
A full passive three-way: it runs from one amplifier channel per side, with no DSP required.
Each crossover has four tweeter and four midrange level settings, from −4 dB to +2 dB.
JL recommends 25–150 W per channel, so plan on an amplifier rather than head-unit power.
We found no readable reviews of this exact set; the predecessor C5-653 was well reviewed, which is context rather than proof.

Figures come from the official C6-653 manual, our store listing and the 2026 Indian catalogue. The manual labels all three cutouts; the depths are listed figures (retailers read the woofer's from an unlabelled drawing), so we confirm them in your car.
What a passive three-way gets you
A three-way divides the music between three drivers per side. The 6.5-inch woofers in the doors handle bass and midbass, the 2.75-inch midranges take the vocal band, and the silk domes cover the treble. Each driver works over a narrower range, which generally lowers distortion, and the midrange can sit higher in the car, nearer ear level, than a door woofer ever can.
The C6-653 does this with passive networks, so it works without a DSP. Each crossover offers four tweeter and four midrange level settings around a reference point, from −4 dB to +2 dB. That lets an installer balance the set to the car, for example turning down a tweeter that reflects off a steeply raked windscreen or lifting a midrange mounted low in the dash.
JL's description adds DMA-optimised woofers with oversized voice coils, cast-alloy woofer frames with JL's raised-frame cooling design, and the claim that the C6 series is born from the same DNA as the flagship C7. Those are manufacturer claims rather than independent findings.
Amplifier, processing and wiring
JL's manual recommends 25–150 W per channel for the set, rated at 100 W continuous. Because the crossovers are passive, the kit needs only one amplifier channel per side: a four-channel amplifier such as the XDM400/4, at 75 W per channel into 4 Ω, or the more powerful HD600/4, at 150 W per channel, can run the front stage and leave two channels for rear speakers.
A DSP still adds something. Passive crossovers fix the frequency split, but they can't correct for the driver sitting much closer to one side of the car than the other. Time alignment and EQ from a DSP amplifier, such as JL's VX600/6i, are a sensible later upgrade, and our post on why car audio needs DSP explains the benefit. If your factory touchscreen stays, an OEM integration processor such as the FiX 86 accepts speaker-level signals and corrects factory delays before amplification.
What owners and reviewers say about the JL Audio C6-653
Reviews of this exact set are scarce. When we checked in October 2026, we found none we could verify: OnlineCarStereo and Sonic Electronix both showed no reviews of the C6-653, and Crutchfield's customer-review page for the C6-653 wouldn't load for us, so we can't say what it contains.
The predecessor has a longer record, which we include as context only, because the C6-653 is a newer generation and those results may not carry over. A December 2018 PASMAG test report on the C5-653, based on listening on a test baffle, found the sound natural and smooth across genres, with strong, articulate bass, clean treble and a clear midrange that stayed free of harshness at high volume. It praised the build and the adjustable crossover, and wanted slightly more top-end detail on one acoustic recording.
Four owner reviews of the C5-653 on OnlineCarStereo, dated 2013 to 2019 and all positive, say it sounds better than its price suggests and rivals pricier speakers, playing loud yet smooth with punchy woofers and natural vocals. One owner recommends a three-way over two-way kits and liked the substantial crossovers, and one fitted to a second-generation Mini Cooper handled audiobooks, classical, jazz and rock well. Again, these describe the previous model. If you've fitted a C6-653, we'd welcome your impressions.
C6-653 vs the C6-650, an active C6 build and the C7 drivers
The C6-650 Passive two-way costs ₹1,24,990, so the C6-653 asks ₹75,000 more for the two midranges and the midrange level control. Build the same three-way actively, from the C6-650 Active set (₹1,14,990) and two C6-275cm midranges at ₹79,990 each, and the drivers alone cost ₹2,74,970 before a six-channel DSP amplifier. The C6-653 is the much cheaper route to a C6 three-way; the active route buys per-driver tuning control.
A full active C7 three-way, with two each of the C7 tweeter, midrange and C7-650cw woofer, totals ₹7,49,940 at MRP for the drivers alone, nearly four times the C6-653. At the other end, the C3-650 (₹79,990) and C2-650 (₹32,990) are two-way sets for buyers who don't need a third way.
Who it suits, and who it doesn't
It suits buyers who want a proper three-way without the cost and complexity of an active system, cars with usable dash or pillar positions for the midranges, and owners who like setting the balance at the crossover rather than in software.
It doesn't suit cars with no realistic midrange location, systems running on head-unit power alone, or anyone who wants independent reviews of this exact model first, since we found none. If you already own a DSP amplifier, the active route gives more control, at a higher driver cost.
Fitting a three-way in an Indian car
Each side needs three locations: a 139 mm opening in the door for the woofer, with 66 mm of listed depth; a 64 mm hole for the midrange, with 36 mm of listed depth; and a 47 mm hole for the tweeter. Our listing notes that the midrange fixtures drop into many factory dash locations, but dashboards in Indian cars vary widely, so we check yours before you order.
Put the two crossovers somewhere dry, such as under the seats or behind the kick panels, away from the wet side of the door. Seal and damp the doors so the woofers' midbass isn't lost, and use heat-resistant fixings for anything on the dash, which bakes in the summer sun. VA3 Car Studio in Ghaziabad installs complete three-way systems and can confirm fitment before you commit.
Price and where to buy
The JL Audio C6-653 has an MRP of ₹1,99,990 in the 2026 Indian catalogue for the complete set of six drivers and two crossovers. VA3 Car Studio often sells below MRP; current pricing is on our C6-653 product page. Supreme Audiotek Pvt. Ltd. of New Delhi handles JL Audio's marketing and distribution in India, and everything we sell is genuine.
Our take
The C6-653 is the most practical way into a JL three-way: a complete, matched set with useful level adjustment on both tweeter and midrange, working from an ordinary amplifier. It costs ₹75,000 more than the C6-650 Passive, needs a home for the midranges, and has no verifiable reviews of this generation yet, only positive feedback on its predecessor. If your car can take the midranges, it's a strong choice; if not, the C6-650 Passive gives you the same woofer and a 1-inch silk-dome tweeter for less.
JL Audio C6-653 FAQ
Does the JL Audio C6-653 need a DSP?
No. Its passive crossovers split the signal between woofer, midrange and tweeter, so it runs from one amplifier channel per side. A DSP can still improve the result with time alignment and EQ, but it isn't required.
What amplifier suits the C6-653?
JL recommends 25–150 W per channel. A four-channel amplifier such as the XDM400/4, at 75 W per channel into 4 Ω, can drive the set on two channels and rear speakers on the other two.
Where do the C6-653 midranges go?
They need a 64 mm hole, usually in the dash or A-pillars, and our listing notes fixtures that drop into many factory dash locations. We check the openings in your car before you order.
