Updated: Oct 6

The Alpine S2-W12 is the 12-inch (30 cm) subwoofer in Alpine's next-generation S-Series, available as the S2-W12D4 with dual 4-ohm voice coils or the S2-W12D2 with dual 2-ohm coils. Both carry a 600 W RMS and 1,800 W peak rating, a published 23 Hz to 215 Hz response and, for the D4, 86.2 dB sensitivity, the highest of the S2 subs. At an Indian MRP of ₹25,999 it is the largest S2 subwoofer we stock, only slightly dearer than the 10-inch S2-W10 and far below the R-Series R2-W12. It suits owners with room for a bigger box who want a little more output from the same amplifier power. See today's price on our S2-W12 product page.

Alpine S2-W12 S-Series 12-inch dual voice coil car subwoofer

Key takeaways

  • The same coil, excursion and magnet figures as the S2-W10 (66 mm, 15 mm, 1.8 kg), with more cone area and higher sensitivity.

  • Needs more room: Alpine UK recommends 17.3 to 34 litres sealed or 30 to 45.3 litres ported.

  • The D4 suits one sub at 2 ohms or two at 1 ohm; the D2 suits one sub at 4 ohms or two at 2 ohms.

  • We found only two owner reviews, both positive, one driving it from Alpine's S2-A60M.

Sources: Alpine UK's S2-W12D4 and S2-W12D2 pages, plus Alpine's S2 subwoofer spec sheet. The D2 page copies the D4's figures, even its 4-ohm impedance line; the spec sheet gives the D2 85.7 dB. Our listing quotes the D4 ratings. Mounting depth and cutout aren't listed in any of these, so ask us to measure one.

What the bigger cone buys you

On Alpine's figures, the S2-W12 matches the S2-W10's motor specification: a 66 mm voice coil, a 1.8 kg strontium ferrite magnet, 15 mm of one-way excursion through the HAMR surround, and the same carbon fibre and polypropylene cone construction. What changes is cone area. A 12-inch cone moves more air for the same excursion, and Alpine lists 86.2 dB sensitivity for the D4 against 84.9 dB for the 10-inch, plus a published low end of 23 Hz rather than 25 Hz.

On paper that means a little more output from the same 600 W, at the cost of a bigger box. One owner notes a depth of just over 5 inches, which can be shallow for a 12-inch, though none of Alpine's pages we read lists a depth.

Boxes and boot space

Alpine UK's recommended sealed box is 17.3 to 34 litres, and a ported box 30 to 45.3 litres. A sealed box near the smaller figure keeps the sub's footprint reasonable in a sedan or SUV boot and gives tight, controlled bass. A ported box at the top of the range plays louder around its tuning frequency, but in a compact car it can claim most of the floor. Use thick MDF, brace large panels and seal every joint; a flexing box wastes the extra cone area.

Choosing D4 or D2, and wiring one or two subs

The D4's two 4-ohm coils give 2 ohms in parallel or 8 ohms in series; the D2's two 2-ohm coils give 1 ohm in parallel or 4 ohms in series. Pick the version that gives your amplifier a load where it makes 600 W.

For one sub, the D4 wired to 2 ohms on Alpine's S2-A60M gets 600 W RMS; one owner reports driving a D4 from that amplifier. The D2 wired in series to 4 ohms gets the same 600 W from the bigger S2-A120M, or can run at 1 ohm on the S2-A60M, which is also rated at 600 W there.

For two subs, the S2-A120M is the amplifier to plan around. Two D4s, each at 2 ohms and paralleled to 1 ohm, get 600 W apiece from its 1,200 W RMS 1-ohm rating. Two D2s, each in series at 4 ohms and paralleled to 2 ohms, get the same from its 1,200 W into 2 ohms, as they would from the R2-A150M. Avoid paralleling two D2s to half an ohm, which none of these amplifiers is rated for.

What owners and reviewers say about the Alpine S2-W12

When we checked in October 2026, we found just one OnlineCarStereo review for each version, both from late 2023. The S2-W12D4 review reports loud, powerful bass from an Alpine S2-A60M and good value for money, and recommends it, while noting that a depth of just over 5 inches can be shallow for a 12-inch. The S2-W12D2 review, from a long-time Alpine fan, calls it a powerhouse with deep, booming bass that took their car audio to a new level.

That is a tiny, US-only sample from a site that moderates out unproven negative comments, and it says nothing about long-term reliability. Alpine's pages are promotional, and we found no independent test. Owners, tell us how yours performs.

S2-W12 vs S2-W10 and the R-Series 12s

Against the S2-W10 (₹24,999 MRP), the S2-W12 offers the extra sensitivity and low-end reach described above for a small price difference, but needs a box roughly a third larger at each end of the sealed range. If your boot can spare the space, the 12 gives slightly more on paper from the same amplifier; if not, the 10 is the sensible fit, and the 8-inch S2-W8D4 suits the tightest spaces.

The R2-W12 (₹41,999 MRP) steps up to 750 W RMS and 20 mm of excursion for bigger amplifiers, though Alpine UK lists its sensitivity at 84.5 dB, below the S2-W12D4's figure. For truly shallow mounting, the RS-W12D4 is 81.7 mm deep in our listing, at ₹95,999.

Who should buy it, and who shouldn't

Buy the S2-W12 if you have room for a box of at least 17 litres sealed, you want the highest sensitivity among the S2 subs, and you're pairing it with an S2-A60M or S2-A120M.

Look elsewhere if boot space is tight, where the S2-W10 or S2-W8D4 is the better fit, or if you plan a much bigger amplifier, where the R2-W12's higher rating and excursion fit better.

Installation notes for Indian cars

Measure the boot opening as well as the floor, because a ported box of 30 litres or more has to get through it. Strap the box down so it can't shift over speed breakers, and since no grille is included, keep luggage off the cone. The S2-A120M's manual calls for 4 AWG power wire with a maximum run of 4.5 m and an external fuse of at least 100 A. In a long SUV, the run from battery to boot may exceed that, so plan heavier cable; see our Tchernov 4 AWG power cable review. A 1,200 W amplifier can also pull voltage down at idle with the AC on, so check the battery's health. VA3 Car Studio in Ghaziabad offers professional installation and can check what fits your car.

Price and where to buy

Alpine S2-W12 - another view

The bottom line

This 12-inch pairs the S2-W10's motor figures with more cone area, so on paper the same 600 W goes a little further and reaches a little lower. It needs a bigger box and has almost no owner track record yet, but for a buyer with the space and an S2-A60M or S2-A120M, it has the highest sensitivity of any S2 sub we stock.

Alpine S2-W12 FAQ

Is the Alpine S2-W12 better than the S2-W10?

It is louder and reaches slightly lower on paper, with 86.2 dB against 84.9 dB (D4 versions) and 23 Hz against 25 Hz, from the same 600 W RMS rating. It needs a bigger box, so the 10-inch suits tighter boots.

How do I wire two S2-W12 subwoofers?

Two D4s, each wired to 2 ohms and then paralleled, give 1 ohm; two D2s, each in series at 4 ohms and then paralleled, give 2 ohms. Alpine's S2-A120M gives each sub 600 W RMS in either setup.

What box size does the S2-W12 need?

Alpine UK recommends 17.3 to 34 litres for a sealed box and 30 to 45.3 litres for a ported box, for both versions. Measure the boot opening as well as the floor first.
