Updated: Oct 6

The Alpine R2-W12 is a 12-inch (30 cm) subwoofer from Alpine's R2-generation R-Series, rated at 750 W RMS (2,250 W peak) with a quoted response down to 24 Hz, a 65.5 mm voice coil and 20 mm of linear excursion. We sell it as the R2-W12D4 (dual 4-ohm) or the R2-W12D2 (dual 2-ohm) under one listing, at an Indian MRP of ₹41,999, the same price as the 10-inch R2-W10. It is the R2 sub to choose when you have room for a proper box and want the bigger cone and slightly lower quoted response of the pair. Today's price is on our R2-W12 product page.

Alpine R2-W12 12-inch R-Series subwoofer

Key takeaways

  • 750 W RMS, 24–200 Hz and 479 cm² of cone area, with a 144 oz double-stacked magnet.

  • The D4 and D2 differ in more than impedance: the D2 has slightly higher sensitivity and a lower Qts, which changes box behaviour.

  • Alpine recommends a 21-litre sealed box or a 41-litre ported box tuned to 36 Hz.

  • Owner feedback is positive but thin, and most of it covers the D2 version.

Figures come from Alpine's R2-W12D2/D4 technical sheet and Alpine UK's R2-W12D4 page, which lists 84.5 dB for the D4, as our listing does. Alpine UK's depth and cutout entries pair inch and millimetre figures that don't match (its 231 mm cutout is the 10-inch's), so we'd measure the driver before cutting a baffle.

What the R2 motor and cone bring

Alpine's sheet credits the R2 subs with larger, double-stacked magnets for more motor force than the previous generation, a hybrid poly-ceramic dust cap that is stiff yet well damped, and its HAMR surround for long, cool-running excursion. On this 12-inch the magnet weighs 144 oz, about 4.1 kg, behind a Kevlar-reinforced pulp cone. Alpine UK also lists it as CTA-2031 compliant.

Against the R2-W10, the 12-inch adds cone area, 479 cm² against 333 cm², and Alpine quotes it 2 Hz deeper. Both share the same voice coil, Xmax and 750 W rating.

D4 and D2 are not just different impedances

Alpine publishes separate parameters for each version, and they matter. The D2 is slightly more sensitive (85 dB against 84.6 dB) and has a lower total Q, 0.41 against 0.51. In Alpine's recommended sealed box, that gives the D2 a well-damped Qtc of 0.65 with an F3 of 43 Hz, while the D4 reaches 39 Hz with a Qtc of 0.84, a little more upper-bass punch at the cost of some control. In the ported box the two are close: an F3 of 29 Hz for the D2 and 28 Hz for the D4, both tuned to 36 Hz.

On those figures, the D2 suits tight, controlled sealed bass, and the D4 gives a touch more weight in the same box.

Box designs from Alpine

  • Sealed: Alpine's range is about 16 to 28 litres net (0.55 to 1.0 cubic feet). The recommended box measures about 356 x 356 x 279 mm outside (14 x 14 x 11 in) with about 21 litres (0.75 cubic feet) net.

  • Ported: the range is about 28 to 42 litres net (1.0 to 1.5 cubic feet), tuned between 33 and 37 Hz. The recommended box is about 318 x 356 x 648 mm outside (12.5 x 14 x 25.5 in), about 41 litres (1.45 cubic feet) net, with a 318 x 38 mm slot vent about 559 mm long.

The ported box gains about 11 to 14 Hz of extension on Alpine's F3 figures but has about twice the external volume, so check your boot before committing.

Wiring it to the amplifier you have

Start from the amplifier; ratings below are from our listings. With an R2-A75M, which makes 750 W into 2 Ω, buy one D4 and wire its coils in parallel; that matches the sub's rating exactly. An S2-A60M (600 W at 2 Ω) works the same way at a little less power.

With an R2-A150M, the options widen: one D2 with its coils in series gives 4 Ω and 700 W; two D4s, each in parallel and then paralleled together, give 1 Ω and 750 W per sub from its 1,500 W rating; two D2s wired to 2 Ω share its 1,200 W, about 600 W each. The S2-A120M covers one D2 at 4 Ω (600 W) or two D2s at 2 Ω (1,200 W).

What owners and reviewers say about the Alpine R2-W12

Feedback is thin and all from US retailers. This is what we found when we checked in October 2026.

Four reviews of the D2 version on OnlineCarStereo, from May 2024 to April 2026, describe hard, consistent bass in a ported box, clean bass with real physical impact, strong output in a custom truck box that suits hip-hop, and, from an owner who replaced an older Alpine R-Series 12-inch, sound quality that doesn't disappoint. For the D4, a single January 2024 OnlineCarStereo review says it goes lower and hits truly hard, is very clean and powerful, and is excellent value for its performance. That site moderates reviews.

Walmart shows two five-star ratings for the D4 with no written reviews. We found no complaints, independent tests or Indian owner reports, so tell us how yours performs.

R2-W12 vs other Alpine subs

The R2-W10 costs the same and suits smaller boxes, while the shallow RS-W12D4 (₹95,999) fits a 12-inch into about 82 mm of depth but is rated at 600 W RMS and costs more than twice as much. On a budget, the S2-W12 (₹25,999, 600 W RMS) is the entry 12-inch.

Who should buy it, and who shouldn't

Buy the R2-W12 if you have room for a 21-litre sealed box or a 41-litre ported one, want the deepest quoted response in the R2 range, and will drive it with 600 to 750 W.

Look elsewhere if boot space is precious, where the R2-W10 or a shallow RS-series sub fits better, or if you want a cheaper entry, where the S2-W12 makes sense.

Installation notes for Indian cars

Measure the boot and its opening: the ported box is about 648 mm long with a 318 x 356 mm cross-section, so it may not pass through a small one. Use 19 mm MDF, brace the larger panels, seal all joints and anchor the box so it can't slide on rough roads. Run power cable and fuses as your amplifier's manual specifies, give the amplifier airflow in a hot boot, set the low-pass near 80 Hz and set gains with a test tone. Price and where to buy

The R2-W12 carries an MRP of ₹41,999 in our current Indian price list. The listing covers the D4 and D2 versions, so tell us which you want. We often sell below MRP, so check the current offer on the R2-W12 product page. Every unit we sell is a genuine Alpine product.

Alpine R2-W12 - another view

The bottom line

The R2-W12 is the larger member of the R2 family, with Alpine's published sealed and ported designs and a choice of voice coils that affects tuning as well as wiring. Owners report clean, hard-hitting bass, though there are few of them. With a properly built box and a 600 to 750 W amplifier, it is a strong 12-inch for the price of its 10-inch sibling.

Alpine R2-W12 FAQ

What is the difference between the Alpine R2-W12D4 and R2-W12D2?

Besides impedance, Alpine's figures give the D2 slightly higher sensitivity (85 dB against 84.6 dB) and a lower Qts (0.41 against 0.51), so in Alpine's sealed box it has a lower Qtc for tighter bass, while the D4 reaches a little lower there.

What box does the R2-W12 need?

Alpine recommends about 21 litres net sealed or about 41 litres net ported, tuned to 36 Hz. Its sealed range runs from about 16 to 28 litres and its ported range from about 28 to 42 litres.

Which amplifier should I pair with the R2-W12?

For one sub, a D4 wired to 2 ohms on the R2-A75M (750 W at 2 ohms in our listing) is an exact match. For one D2 at 4 ohms, the R2-A150M's 700 W rating suits it well.
