Updated: Oct 6

The Alpine S2-A120M is a Class D mono subwoofer amplifier from Alpine's second-generation S-Series, rated at 600 W RMS into 4 Ω and 1,200 W RMS into both 2 Ω and 1 Ω, all at 14.4 V. Its Indian MRP is ₹55,999, the same as the R-Series R2-A75M, and it's the larger of the two S-Series mono amps we sell. It suits a two-subwoofer system, or a single sub that can take 600 W at 4 Ω, for owners ready to upgrade their car's power wiring. See today's price on our Alpine S2-A120M product page.

Alpine S2-A120M S-Series Class D mono subwoofer amplifier

Quick summary

  • Rated at 600 W RMS into 4 Ω and 1,200 W into 2 Ω or 1 Ω at 14.4 V, double the S2-A60M's 2 Ω and 1 Ω figures.

  • Two Alpine S2-W10 or S2-W12 subs wired to 2 Ω or 1 Ω get 600 W each, matching their RMS rating.

  • Into 2 Ω it carries the same 1,200 W rating as the R2-A150M, at a ₹6,000 lower MRP.

  • It needs a main fuse of 100 A or more, and Alpine limits 4 AWG cable to 4.5 m, so plan the wiring before you buy.

Figures come from Alpine's S2-A120M and S2-A60M owner's manual. Alpine India's page lists the 4 Ω and 2 Ω ratings, though not the 1 Ω figure, and describes the side-panel controls and three-position turn-on switch.

1,200 W at 2 Ω or 1 Ω

The S2-A120M doubles the S2-A60M's 2 Ω and 1 Ω ratings, from 600 W to 1,200 W, and lifts the 4 Ω figure from 330 W to 600 W. As with the smaller amp, the 1 Ω rating equals the 2 Ω rating, so a 1 Ω load gives you wiring options rather than extra output. Alpine quotes the 4 Ω rating at 0.2% THD+N or less and the 2 Ω and 1 Ω ratings at 1.0% or less.

All of those figures assume 14.4 V. An amplifier this size can draw heavily on the car's charging system, and when the engine idles in traffic with the AC running, the amp may deliver less than its ratings. Have the battery and alternator checked before fitting one.

Wiring two subs, or one

Two S2-W12 or S2-W10 subs, each rated at 600 W RMS, are the natural load. With dual 4 Ω (D4) versions, wire each sub's coils in parallel for 2 Ω and the two subs in parallel for 1 Ω. With dual 2 Ω (D2) versions, wire each sub's coils in series for 4 Ω and the two subs in parallel for 2 Ω. Either way the amp delivers 1,200 W, or 600 W per sub, matching their rating.

For a single sub, the 4 Ω rating is the useful one. An S2-W10D2 or S2-W12D2 with its coils in series presents 4 Ω and gets 600 W, its full rating, and a dual 2 Ω version of the R-Series R2-W12, rated at 750 W RMS, gets the same 600 W wired that way. Avoid running one 600 W sub at 2 Ω or 1 Ω, where it would be offered twice its rating.

Power wiring, controls and inputs

Alpine calls for a main fuse of 100 A or more, and the amp carries four 25 A fuses of its own. Its manual lists 4 AWG (21 mm²) cable only for runs of up to 4.5 m, which is shorter than many battery-to-boot runs, so expect heavier cable; we size it for the car.

The controls mirror the S2-A60M's: a 50–400 Hz low-pass at 24 dB per octave and a bass EQ of up to 12 dB at 50 Hz, best used lightly because every 3 dB of boost doubles the power demand. As with its sibling, Alpine lists no subsonic filter. A speaker-RCA conversion cable feeds it speaker-level signals, and the DC turn-on mode senses the head unit's DC offset, which suits factory touchscreens. The sound controls sit on the side panels under removable end caps, and the optional RUX-KNOB.2 adds a dashboard bass control.

What owners and reviewers say about the Alpine S2-A120M

We found four reviews we could read when we checked in October 2026, all on OnlineCarStereo and dated March to June 2024, and no magazine tests.

All four are positive. One buyer describes a big step up in power and excellent bass from a 12-inch sub; another praises the build and sound quality driving two Alpine subs, with power to spare for more; a third runs a single 10-inch Alpine S2 sub in a 2007 Mustang and reports dramatic bass; the fourth says it works well with both 12-inch and 10-inch subs. OnlineCarStereo moderates reviews to remove unproven negative comments, so treat this as a small, favourable sample. Alpine's pages are promotional.

S2-A120M vs R2-A150M, R2-A75M and S2-A60M

Against the R2-A150M (₹61,999 MRP), both are rated at 1,200 W into 2 Ω. The R-Series amp adds 100 W into 4 Ω (700 W) and 300 W into 1 Ω (1,500 W), and calls for a 150 A main fuse. If your subs will sit at 2 Ω, the S2-A120M offers the same rated power for ₹6,000 less, along with a higher quoted signal-to-noise ratio of over 85 dB at 1 W against over 75 dB.

The R2-A75M costs the same ₹55,999 but is rated at 750 W into 2 Ω. Its strengths are a narrower 282 mm chassis, 4 AWG runs of up to 8 m and a listed 8–40 Hz subsonic filter. For one 600 W sub at 2 Ω, the S2-A60M (₹35,999 MRP, 600 W) is the better-matched and cheaper choice.

Who should buy it, and who shouldn't

Buy the S2-A120M if you're running two S2-W10 or S2-W12 subs at 2 Ω or 1 Ω, or one dual 2 Ω sub at 4 Ω, and want 1,200 W into 2 Ω without paying for the R2-A150M.

Look elsewhere if you have one 600 W or 750 W sub wired to 2 Ω, where the S2-A60M or R2-A75M fits better; if space is tight, since the R2-A75M is 70 mm narrower; or if you want a listed subsonic filter for a ported box. Our guide to figuring out the need for an amplifier explains how to size one.

Installation notes for Indian cars

Alpine's manual warns that the amplifier produces considerable heat in operation and must be mounted where air can circulate freely. At 352 mm it's the widest S-Series amp we sell, so plan a proper mounting board in the boot, leave space around the heat sink and keep it away from luggage and direct sun. Ask us to check the space alongside your subwoofer enclosure.

Fit the main fuse close to the battery, use a short, solid ground to bare metal, set the gain with a test tone and keep the bass EQ near zero. VA3 Car Studio in Ghaziabad offers professional installation, including power wiring sized for your car.

Alpine S2-A120M - another view

The bottom line

The S2-A120M is the S-Series amp for two 600 W subs: 1,200 W into 2 Ω or 1 Ω, a steep low-pass, bass EQ and factory-head-unit turn-on. Into 2 Ω it matches the pricier R2-A150M on paper, which makes it the sensible choice for two 600 W S2 subs. Budget for heavier power cable and a proper fuse, and note that owner feedback, while positive, is limited and moderated.

Alpine S2-A120M FAQ

How many subwoofers can the Alpine S2-A120M power?

Two is the natural load: two S2-W10 or S2-W12 subs wired to 2 Ω or 1 Ω get 600 W each, matching their RMS rating. A single dual 2 Ω sub wired in series to 4 Ω also gets 600 W.

Is the S2-A120M better value than the R2-A150M?

For a 2 Ω system, yes on paper: both are rated at 1,200 W RMS into 2 Ω, and the S2-A120M's MRP is ₹6,000 lower. The R2-A150M is rated higher only into 1 Ω and 4 Ω.

What main fuse and power cable does the S2-A120M need?

Alpine specifies a main fuse of 100 A or more and 4 AWG (21 mm²) cable for runs of up to 4.5 m. Longer runs, common in sedans and SUVs, call for heavier cable, so ask us to size it.
