Deaf Bonce ML-12R Review: A 500 W 12-Inch Sub in D2 and D4 Versions
Updated: Oct 6
The Deaf Bonce ML-12R is a 12-inch Machete subwoofer driver rated at 500 W RMS (1,000 W max), with a 2-inch copper voice coil, 12 mm of linear excursion and a choice of dual 2 Ω (D2) or dual 4 Ω (D4) coils. At an India MRP of ₹17,990 it is the most powerful of the three ML-series subs we list, above the 300 W ML-10S and ML-12S and below the 800 W MF-12S. It suits buyers who want a clear step up from entry-level bass without moving to a very large amplifier. Choose your version on our Deaf Bonce ML-12R product page.

Quick summary
500 W RMS, a 2-inch coil and 12 mm Xmax: a real step up from the 300 W ML models.
Deaf Bonce's manual appears to recommend a 50-litre ported box with a 150 cm² port, tuned to 35 Hz.
The D4 wired to 2 Ω is a close match for the MLA-800, rated at 540 W into 2 Ω; the D2 suits 4 Ω on a larger amplifier.
No owner or press reviews were available to us, so this review relies on Deaf Bonce's published figures.

The D2 figures are from Deaf Bonce's ML-12R D2 page, which lists only that version. The D4 figures and the box recommendation come from the ML-10R and ML-12R manual linked from it, and the D4 figures match our listing.
D2 or D4: wiring the two versions
Both versions have two voice coils, and both coils should always be connected. The wiring table in Deaf Bonce's manual sets out the loads: a D2 presents 4 Ω with its coils in series or 1 Ω in parallel, and a D4 presents 8 Ω in series or 2 Ω in parallel. With two subs, a pair of D4s, each wired in parallel and then paralleled together, gives 1 Ω; a pair of D2s, each wired in series and then paralleled, gives 2 Ω.
So the version to buy depends on the amplifier rather than on sound. Mono Class D amplifiers make very different power at each load, and the goal is to land close to the sub's 500 W rating without exceeding it by much.
Amplifier pairing with Deaf Bonce Machete amps
Deaf Bonce's published figures for its MLA amplifiers, all RMS at 14.4 V, make the choice straightforward:
One D4 at 2 Ω on the MLA-800: 540 W, close to the ML-12R's 500 W rating. A D2 at 4 Ω on the MLA-1500 also gets 540 W, but that is a larger amplifier.
One D2 at 4 Ω on the MLA-1000: 400 W, a conservative 80 per cent of the rating with plenty of headroom.
One D2 at 1 Ω on the MLA-800: 790 W, well beyond the rating. Avoid this combination.
Two D4s at 1 Ω on the MLA-1000: 990 W, about 495 W each. Two D2s at 2 Ω on the MLA-1500: 920 W, about 460 W each.
Those ratings assume 14.4 V; at idle with the AC running, real output is lower, which only adds margin. Deaf Bonce's manual suggests a low-pass between 63 and 80 Hz, well within the 32 to 300 Hz range of the MLA-800 and MLA-1000 filters, and no bass boost.
The box Deaf Bonce recommends
The product page gives no box volumes. The manual's enclosure table does, but it doesn't label its two columns; read in document order, the 12-inch ML-12R gets a ported enclosure of 50 litres (1.7 cubic feet) with a 150 cm² port 62 cm long, tuned to 35 Hz, the same figures Deaf Bonce's MF manual prints for the MF-12S. That suits a sedan boot or an SUV's load floor. Have the final design checked for your car, allowing for the space the driver, port and bracing take up inside the box.
The manual also advises setting the subsonic filter 5 Hz below the port tuning, which here means about 30 Hz, so the cone isn't driven below the frequencies the port supports. If you'd rather go sealed for a smaller box, design it from the parameters in the table above, using the D4's own figures if that's the version you buy.
What owners and reviewers say about the Deaf Bonce ML-12R
When we checked in October 2026, we found no owner reviews, forum threads or magazine tests of the ML-12R that we could read and verify. Deaf Bonce's page and manual are manufacturer material, not independent opinion. The product data at Alphard Audio, the online store for Deaf Bonce's US dealer, carries no customer reviews either, though it confirms both D2 and D4 versions are sold there. Its promotional text calls the coil CCAW where Deaf Bonce says copper; we go by the manufacturer.
So there is no owner consensus to report, good or bad. If you've fitted an ML-12R, we'd welcome your feedback on output and reliability.
ML-12R vs ML-12S, HS-1200 and MF-12S
The ML-12S (₹13,990 MRP) has a slightly higher SPL figure, 88.9 dB against 88.0 dB, but only 300 W RMS, a 1.75-inch coil and 10 mm Xmax. The ML-12R costs ₹4,000 more and can use far more power.
The HS-1200 from Deaf Bonce's Hannibal line (₹18,990 MRP) is rated higher, at 600 W RMS, with 11 mm Xmax and an SPL of 86.9 dB. The MF-12S (₹23,990 MRP) is the bigger step: 800 W RMS, a 2.5-inch coil and 14 mm Xmax, with a deeper 159.7 mm mounting depth. Deaf Bonce's manuals appear to give the ML-12R and MF-12S the same 50-litre, 35 Hz box, although the MF-12S needs a larger 283.0 mm cut-out and more depth.
Who should buy it, and who shouldn't
Buy the ML-12R if you want more than entry-level bass, you have a sedan or SUV boot that can take a 50-litre box, and you're buying a new amplifier anyway. The D4 with an MLA-800 is a tidy, well-matched pair.
Look elsewhere if your boot is small, where the 10-inch ML-10S needs far less space, or if you want competition-level output, where the MF-12S and MF-12R are better starting points.
Installation notes for Indian cars
The ML-12R needs a 278.0 mm cut-out and 136.6 mm of mounting depth, and at 7.10 kg packed it is noticeably heavier than the 4.60 kg ML-12S. A 50-litre ported box suits a sedan boot against the rear seat or an SUV's load floor; in a hatchback it will take much of the space.
Secure the box firmly, run a properly fused, heavy-gauge power cable such as Tchernov's 4 AWG cable, sized for your amplifier, and mount the amp where it can shed heat in a hot boot. Damp the boot lid and number-plate area before blaming the sub for rattles. VA3 Car Studio in Ghaziabad can supply the right version, build the box and set the system up.
Price and where to buy
The ML-12R carries an MRP of ₹17,990 in our listing, which covers both the D2 and D4 versions. We often sell below MRP; check today's price and pick the coil version on the Machete ML-12R D2/D4 listing, and ask us to confirm stock of the version you want.

The bottom line
The ML-12R is the most capable ML sub we sell: 500 W RMS, a 2-inch coil and 12 mm Xmax, with a 50-litre ported box that Deaf Bonce's manual appears to recommend and a D2 or D4 choice that lets you match it cleanly to an amplifier. On paper, the D4 on an MLA-800 at 2 Ω is a close single-sub match. Owner feedback is still missing, so we'd welcome reports from anyone running one.
Deaf Bonce ML-12R FAQ
Should I buy the Deaf Bonce ML-12R in D2 or D4?
Choose by amplifier. For one sub on a Deaf Bonce MLA-800, the D4 wired to 2 ohms gets 540 W, close to its 500 W rating. The D2 suits a 4-ohm connection on the MLA-1000 (400 W), or a pair wired to 2 ohms on the MLA-1500.
What box does the ML-12R need?
Deaf Bonce's manual appears to recommend a ported box of 50 litres with a 150 cm² port 62 cm long, tuned to 35 Hz (the table's columns are unlabelled, so we matched them by document order). For a sealed box, design from the published parameters, such as Fs 38.0 Hz, Qts 0.46 and Vas 42.0 litres for the D2.
Does Deaf Bonce make a D4 version of the ML-12R?
Yes. The product page shows only the D2, but the manual linked from it documents both D2 and D4 versions, and Deaf Bonce's US dealer sells both. Ask us to confirm D4 stock before you order.
