DS18 PRO-X6.4BM Review: 250 W RMS vs 500 W Max Explained

6 min read

The DS18 PRO-X6.4BM is a 165 mm (6.5-inch) mid-range loudspeaker with an aluminium bullet at the centre, rated by DS18 at 250 W RMS into 4 ohms. DS18 also prints a 500 W maximum figure, a separate number that should never be read as RMS. At ₹6,490 MRP it is the least expensive of the eight single DS18 mid-range and full-range drivers in our store, and it suits a buyer who plans to add an amplifier and set a high-pass filter rather than do a plug-in swap. You can see it on our DS18 PRO-X6.4BM product page.

DS18 PRO-X6.4BM 6.5-inch mid-range bullet loudspeaker

Quick summary

  • DS18 lists 250 W RMS and 500 W maximum as separate ratings; size the amplifier on the RMS figure.

  • The published response is 100 Hz to 10 kHz with a recommended 140 Hz high-pass, so deep bass is left to a subwoofer or midbass driver and the top octave to a tweeter.

  • It needs a 145 mm (5.7 in) cut-out and 65.5 mm of mounting depth; the overall diameter is 167 mm.

  • The only reviews we could read are on DS18's own shop, where the visible comments are short and favourable. We found no independent reviews.

Figures come from our listing, checked against DS18's PRO-X6.4BM product page and its owner's manual (manufacturer material, so promotional). DS18's page disagrees with itself: the key-features list says 96 dB and the description says 100 Hz to 12 kHz, while the spec table and manual say 95 dB and 100 Hz to 10 kHz. We have used the spec table and manual.

RMS first, maximum second: reading DS18's power ratings

DS18 prints two power figures for this driver, 250 W RMS and 500 W maximum, and they are not interchangeable. The title on DS18's own page ends with 250W RMS 4-Ohm, and its spec table lists the 500 W figure as a separate maximum rating.

DS18's help page describes RMS as the constant power supplied to the speaker, notes that every amplifier also has a maximum output figure, and advises choosing an amplifier that can output the correct RMS rating for your speakers. Our own advice, not DS18's, is to pick amplifier channels rated in RMS at 4 ohms whose output does not exceed the driver's 250 W, and to set gains carefully, because a clipping amplifier can damage a driver. DS18's warranty page lists use outside recommended parameters (overpowering is its example) and distortion or clipping from improper tuning among its exclusions.

Powering it: head unit, amplifier or DSP

DS18 quotes 95 dB for 1 W at 1 m. Sensitivity describes the sound level for a given power; it does not tell you how loud a system will be in your car, and we make no loudness claim beyond DS18's published ratings.

A head unit's built-in amplifier is typically modest, and not every head unit has an adjustable high-pass filter, so you may be unable to follow DS18's 140 Hz recommendation. A small four-channel amplifier with adjustable filters, or a DSP, is the more flexible partner: set the high-pass first and the gains second. Our article on why a DSP matters in a car system explains what it adds, and VA3 Car Studio also does DSP tuning.

What owners and reviewers say about the DS18 PRO-X6.4BM

When we checked in October 2026, the only buyer feedback we could read for this driver sat on DS18's own shop page, which also sells pairs and sets of four and shows 171 reviews. The text we could read gives no average and no labels for its rating breakdown: one bar holds 148 reviews (87%) and another six (4%). We read the first as the top rating, but the page does not say so.

Five reviews were visible, all short, and one has no text. Buyers are positive about the sound, and some also comment on how loud the speakers are, which is a subjective impression and not a claim we make. One recent reviewer says they will buy more, and another calls the sound quality very good. None of the five describes a fault, but we could not tell what the six reviews in the other bar say. It is the brand's own shop, and how it moderates reviews is not stated.

We found no forum threads or independent retailer reviews we could read, and large marketplaces such as Amazon block automated reading, so reviews there are not reflected here. If you own a pair, we would like to hear how it behaves in your car.

DS18 PRO-X6.4BM compared with its siblings

Among the single 6.5-inch DS18 drivers we list, the nearest on price is the DS18 6PRO300MR-4 (₹8,490 MRP). DS18 rates it at 150 W RMS and 102 dB, against 250 W RMS and 95 dB here, so it has less power handling and higher sensitivity. Its voice coil is 31.7 mm and its Xmax 0.95 mm, against 38.6 mm and 8.2 mm here.

For more power handling, the DS18 6XL600-4 (₹13,990 MRP) is rated at 300 W RMS with a published 60 Hz to 12.5 kHz response, but it needs 80 mm of mounting depth against 65.5 mm here. The 8-inch member of this series is covered in our PRO-X8.4BM review.

To buy mid-range and tweeters together, the DS18 PRO-X6.4BMPK package includes a pair of this driver. DS18's package page and manual quote 96 dB and 100 Hz to 12 kHz for that mid-range, and the package manual gives a 160 Hz high-pass. All three differ from the single-piece figures above, so treat the filter setting as something to confirm during tuning.

Who should buy it, and who shouldn't

Buy it if you are building a front stage with an amplifier or DSP, you can set a high-pass near 140 Hz, and you want the lowest MRP among our single DS18 mid-range and full-range drivers.

Look elsewhere if you expect one driver to cover bass, if your head unit is the only power source and has no filter control, or if the door offers less than 65.5 mm of clear depth.

Installation notes for Indian cars

Measure before ordering. The cut-out is 145 mm and the mounting depth 65.5 mm, but the window glass travel and the door's inner skin decide whether that fits. If the factory opening does not suit, VA3 Car Studio builds door baffles and speaker pods, and offers professional installation in Ghaziabad.

The DS18 manual lists a paper cone and cloth surround. Door cavities see water in the monsoon and at car washes, so keep the moisture barrier and drain holes intact, and apply damping material to the inner panel as our sound damping guide describes, so the driver is not working against a rattling panel.

Price and where to buy

The DS18 PRO-X6.4BM carries an India MRP of ₹6,490 and is sold as a single piece, so a pair means two (₹12,980 at MRP). VA3 Car Studio often sells below MRP, so check the current offer on the PRO-X6.4BM product page. Warranty terms are DS18's own, and its warranty page does not say how they apply to purchases outside the US, so confirm the India terms with us before you buy.

DS18 PRO-X6.4BM - another view

The bottom line

The PRO-X6.4BM is a 6.5-inch mid-range driver with a stated 250 W RMS rating, 95 dB sensitivity and a recommended 140 Hz high-pass. It is a driver for a planned system, not a quick speaker swap. Size the amplifier on RMS, set the filter first, and the published figures give you a fair basis to build on.

DS18 PRO-X6.4BM FAQ

How much power does the DS18 PRO-X6.4BM handle?

DS18 rates it at 250 W RMS and gives a separate maximum rating of 500 W. Compare an amplifier's RMS output with the 250 W figure; the maximum rating is not an RMS number.

Does the DS18 PRO-X6.4BM need a subwoofer?

Its published response starts at 100 Hz and DS18 recommends a 140 Hz high-pass, so the deep bass has to come from a subwoofer or midbass driver. Without one, expect very little low bass from a system built on this driver.

Can I run the PRO-X6.4BM without an amplifier?

A head unit's own amplifier is typically modest, and you still want a high-pass near 140 Hz, so an amplifier or DSP is the better route. One reviewer on DS18's shop mentions using the speakers without an amplifier, but that is one buyer's setup, not a rule, and we make no loudness claim for it.

What cut-out does the PRO-X6.4BM need?

DS18 lists a 145 mm (5.7 in) front-mount cut-out and 65.5 mm of mounting depth. Check both against your door and the window glass travel, and ask us about fitment before ordering.
