DS18 6PRO300MR-4 Review: A 102 dB, 150 W RMS 6.5-Inch Mid-Range

6 min read

The DS18 6PRO300MR-4 is a 165 mm (6.5-inch) high-sensitivity mid-range loudspeaker, rated by DS18 at 102 dB, 150 W RMS into 4 ohms and a separate 300 W maximum. At ₹8,490 MRP it is the second-cheapest of the single 6.5-inch DS18 drivers we list, ₹2,000 above the PRO-X6.4BM, and it suits a buyer who wants a sensitive driver for a front stage that will be filtered at about 160 Hz. You can see it on our DS18 6PRO300MR-4 product page.

DS18 6PRO300MR-4 6.5-inch high-sensitivity mid-range speaker

Quick summary

  • DS18 lists 150 W RMS and a separate 300 W maximum; the RMS figure is the one to compare with an amplifier channel.

  • DS18 sells it as a high-sensitivity driver at 102 dB, but its published Xmax is 0.95 mm one way and it recommends a 160 Hz high-pass, so filtering matters more than raw power.

  • It needs a 149 mm (5.87 in) cut-out and 72 mm of mounting depth; no grille is included, and DS18's page and manual disagree on the terminal gauge.

  • The only review we could read is a single one on DS18's own shop. We found no independent reviews.

Figures come from our listing, checked against DS18's 6PRO300MR-4 product page and its owner's manual (manufacturer material, so promotional). The terminal gauge is the one figure where the two disagree, so we show both.

A rating is a ceiling, not a target

DS18 prints 150 W RMS and 300 W maximum for this driver. Only the first is an RMS figure, and it is the one to compare with an amplifier channel's RMS rating at 4 ohms. DS18's help page describes RMS as the constant power supplied to the speaker and advises choosing an amplifier that can output the correct RMS rating for your speakers.

Our own view, not DS18's, is that a rating tells you the most a driver is rated to take, not what you need to supply. A four-channel amplifier whose channels deliver less than 150 W RMS can be a sound partner as long as it is not driven into clipping. DS18's warranty page lists use outside recommended parameters (overpowering is its example) and distortion or clipping from improper tuning among its exclusions.

Why the filter matters more than the watts

DS18 publishes a 0.95 mm Xmax, a 100 Hz to 12.5 kHz response and a recommended 160 Hz high-pass. In our view a small Xmax is the reason to set the high-pass before the gain, and it makes a head unit without an adjustable filter a risky partner even though a 102 dB figure means little power is needed for a given level on paper. A small amplifier with filters, or a DSP, is the safer route. Our article on why a DSP matters in a car system explains what it adds, and VA3 Car Studio does DSP tuning.

Sensitivity is a rough guide under DS18's test conditions, not a loudness promise, and we have not measured it. Low bass still needs a subwoofer.

Build, terminals and grille

DS18 lists a curvilinear paper cone, cloth surround, black steel basket, 25 oz ferrite magnet and a copper demodulating ring. Our listing says the ring is there to reduce harmonic and intermodulation distortion; we have not measured that. The push terminals are 8 gauge on DS18's product page and 16 gauge in its manual, so check them against your cable before buying wire. Our listing and DS18's page say no grille is included, and the manual does not mention one.

What owners and reviewers say about the DS18 6PRO300MR-4

When we checked in October 2026, the only buyer feedback we could read was a single review on DS18's own shop page, which shows no date. It is written in Spanish. The buyer says they are very happy, calls the speakers perfect and says the sound is very good. The rating bar shows that one review at 100%, in a breakdown the text does not label.

One review is not a sample. It says nothing about fit, amplifier or vehicle, and DS18's shop does not say how it moderates reviews. We found no forum threads or independent retailer reviews we could read, and large marketplaces such as Amazon block automated reading. If you own one, we would like to hear how it behaves in your car.

DS18 6PRO300MR-4 compared with its siblings

The DS18 PRO-X6.4BM (₹6,490 MRP) is the 6.5-inch alternative from the PRO-X family. DS18 rates it at 250 W RMS and 95 dB, so it has 100 W more RMS handling and 7 dB lower sensitivity than this driver, and its published Xmax is 8.2 mm against 0.95 mm. It costs ₹2,000 less at MRP.

The DS18 6XL600-4 (₹13,990 MRP) is rated at 300 W RMS and 97 dB, with a 60 Hz to 12.5 kHz response and a 100 Hz recommended high-pass. At 8 inches, the DS18 8PRO400MR-4 (₹9,990 MRP) shares this driver's 160 Hz recommended high-pass and 100 Hz to 12.5 kHz response, at 200 W RMS and 104 dB.

Who should buy it, and who shouldn't

Buy it if you want a sensitive 6.5-inch mid-range, you will filter it with an amplifier or DSP at about 160 Hz, and your mounting position has a 149 mm cut-out and 72 mm of depth.

Look elsewhere if you want a driver rated for hundreds of watts, if you expect bass or long excursion, if the head unit is your only power source, or if you want a grille in the box.

Installation notes for Indian cars

Measure before ordering. The 149 mm cut-out and 72 mm mounting depth are DS18's figures, and window glass travel and the door skin decide whether they fit your car. VA3 Car Studio builds door baffles and speaker pods and offers professional installation in Ghaziabad. If the driver will be visible, plan a grille or cover separately.

Door cavities see water in the monsoon, so keep the moisture barrier intact, and damp the panel as our sound damping guide describes.

Price and where to buy

The DS18 6PRO300MR-4 carries an India MRP of ₹8,490 and is sold as a single piece, so a pair means two (₹16,980 at MRP). VA3 Car Studio often sells below MRP, so check the current offer on the 6PRO300MR-4 product page. Warranty terms are DS18's own, and its warranty page does not say how they apply to purchases outside the US, so confirm the India terms with us before you buy.

DS18 6PRO300MR-4 - another view

The bottom line

The 6PRO300MR-4 is a sensitive 6.5-inch mid-range with a 150 W RMS rating, a small published Xmax and a recommended 160 Hz high-pass. Treat the filter as part of the product: set it first, keep the amplifier clean, and check the cut-out, depth and terminals before you order.

DS18 6PRO300MR-4 FAQ

How much power does the DS18 6PRO300MR-4 handle?

DS18 rates it at 150 W RMS and gives a separate maximum rating of 300 W. Compare an amplifier channel's RMS output at 4 ohms with the 150 W figure; the maximum is not an RMS number.

Does the 6PRO300MR-4 need a high-pass filter?

DS18 recommends a 160 Hz high-pass and publishes an Xmax of 0.95 mm one way, so set one in your amplifier or DSP before you raise the gain. A head unit with no adjustable filter is a poor match.

What cut-out does the 6PRO300MR-4 need?

DS18 lists a 149 mm (5.87 in) front-mount cut-out, 72 mm of mounting depth and a 170 mm overall diameter. Check them against your mounting position, and ask us about fitment before ordering.

Which terminal gauge does the 6PRO300MR-4 use?

DS18's product page says its push terminals are 8 gauge, while its manual says 16 gauge. Check the terminals on the driver against your cable before you buy wire, and ask us if you are unsure.
