Dynaudio Esotar2 1200 Review: Specifications, Fitment and Comparisons
Quick summary: the buying decision
The Esotar² 1200 is the 12-inch subwoofer from Dynaudio's flagship Esotar² reference series, designed for active (DSP) systems. With an Fs of 18.7 Hz, 20.5 mm of linear excursion and a 400 W long-term rating, it is built for deep, accurate bass in a high-end system; its 143 mm mounting depth and large Vas mean the enclosure needs careful planning.
Dynaudio Esotar² 1200: what it is
The Dynaudio Esotar² 1200 is the 12-inch subwoofer from Dynaudio's flagship Esotar² reference car audio series, with an MSP (Magnesium Silicate Polymer) cone, a 75 mm aluminium voice coil, 20.5 mm of linear excursion and a rigid die-cast aluminium frame. It plays down to 18 Hz.
Esotar² is Dynaudio's flagship car audio range: the 110 tweeter, the 430 midrange, the 650 mid/woofer and this 1200 subwoofer. The cone drivers use MSP (Magnesium Silicate Polymer) cones in die-cast aluminium frames, and the tweeter sits in a CNC-machined metal housing.

Key features
MSP (Magnesium Silicate Polymer) cone: stiff, light and internally damped
75 mm aluminium voice coil with 20.5 mm linear and 58 mm maximum excursion (peak-to-peak)
Recommended range 18 – 300 Hz
400 W long-term power (IEC) and 1,500 W transient (10 ms)

Specifications explained
Thiele/Small data: fs 18.7 Hz, Qts 0.34, Vas 163 l and an effective piston area (Sd) of 425 cm². The 75 mm aluminium voice coil allows 20.5 mm of linear excursion, 58 mm maximum (peak-to-peak).
Dynaudio rates it at 400 W long-term (IEC) and 1,500 W transient (10 ms), and recommends a range of 18 – 300 Hz with an active low-pass at 100 Hz. Outer dimensions are ø297 x 162 mm, with a minimum mounting hole of ø260 mm, a mounting depth of 143 mm and a net weight of 8.8 kg.

Enclosure planning
Model the enclosure from the published parameters rather than a generic 12-inch template. With a Vas of 163 litres, a compact sealed box raises the system Q and the low-frequency roll-off, so a larger box (or a carefully modelled alternative) is needed to use the driver's 18.7 Hz resonance. Allow for the 143 mm mounting depth and the 260 mm minimum mounting hole, and build the box rigid and braced.
Amplifier, DSP and integration
Dynaudio designs the Esotar² range for active systems and recommends a low-pass at 100 Hz. A mono amplifier around 400 W at 4 ohm suits it, for example AudioControl's A800.1 or EPIC1000, or a bridged pair on a D-6.1200 (400 W RMS at 4 ohm), which also gives you the DSP to time-align and equalise the subwoofer with the front stage.
How it compares
The rest of the Esotar² range and other subwoofers:
Dynaudio Esotar² 110: 28 mm soft dome tweeter (Esotar² reference series), 150 W long-term (IEC) and 1,000 W transient (10 ms), ₹2,20,990
Dynaudio Esotar² 430: 4 in midrange driver (Esotar² reference series), 150 W long-term (IEC) and 1,000 W transient (10 ms), ₹1,95,490
Dynaudio Esotar² 650: 6.5 in mid/woofer (Esotar² reference series), 200 W long-term (IEC) and 1,000 W transient (10 ms), ₹1,86,990
Dynaudio Esosub 9L: 9 in, 80 W RMS, 4 ohm, ₹33,990
AudioControl SPK-12S4: 12 in, single 4 ohm, 500 W RMS / 700 W max, mounting depth 156 mm, ₹39,940
Price and value in India
At the time of writing (October 2026), VA3 Car Studio lists the Esotar² 1200 at ₹2,37,990, 15% below the MRP of ₹2,79,990. Remember to budget for an enclosure and a matched amplifier; the driver price is only part of the total. Prices can change, so the product page always shows the current price.
Verdict: who should shortlist the Esotar² 1200
The Esotar² 1200 is for high-end, DSP-tuned systems where bass quality and depth matter more than outright SPL per rupee. Plan the enclosure, amplifier and DSP together before ordering.
Real-world reviews and limitations
We have not yet published a VA3 installation report for the Esotar² 1200. The figures in this review are Dynaudio's published specifications, not our own measurements, and real-world results depend on the enclosure, the cabin and the tune. If you have used one, we would welcome your feedback.
