JL Audio 8W3v3-4 Review: An 8.5-Litre Box, 250 W and Room for Two

Updated: Oct 6

The JL Audio 8W3v3-4 is an 8-inch (200 mm) subwoofer driver from JL's W3v3 series: a single 4 Ω voice coil, 250 W RMS of power handling and a recommended sealed box of only 8.5 litres. Its Indian MRP of ₹39,990 places it between the 6.5-inch 6W3v3-4 and the 12-inch 12W3v3-4. It is the size to consider when a 10 or 12 won't fit but you still want bass with some weight, and it pairs neatly with several JL amplifiers. Details and today's offer are on our 8W3v3-4 product page.

JL Audio 8W3v3-4 8-inch W3v3 subwoofer driver

At a glance

  • JL recommends a 0.30 cu ft (8.5 L) sealed box or a 0.35 cu ft (9.9 L) ported box tuned to 35 Hz; mounting depth is 118 mm.

  • 250 W RMS into 4 Ω, with 75–250 W recommended, and JL's JD500/1 delivers exactly 250 W into 4 Ω at 14.4 V.

  • Two subs wired to 2 Ω suit 500 W amplifiers, in less box volume than a single 12-inch W3v3 needs.

  • Across five owner reviews from 2010 to 2025, owners repeatedly say it hits harder than its size suggests; none records a complaint.

Figures come from JL Audio's 8W3v3 owner's manual, our store listing and the 2026 Indian catalogue, which agree. JL doesn't quote an F3 for these boxes, and the driver displaces 0.85 litres, which the box builder should allow for.

A box you can actually fit

The 8W3v3-4's strongest card is its box. JL's sealed recommendation is 0.30 cu ft (8.5 L), about a quarter of the 31.8 litres it suggests for a sealed 12W3v3-4, and the driver needs 118 mm of mounting depth. A box that size can sit in a hatchback boot without taking it over, or tuck into a side well in a compact SUV.

The ported option is unusually close in size: 0.35 cu ft (9.9 L), tuned to 35 Hz, only 1.4 litres more than sealed before the port itself. That makes ported a realistic choice for extra output around the tuning frequency, with the usual caveat that the cone unloads below tuning and needs a subsonic filter. Sealed remains the simpler build with the tighter sound.

Amplifiers that match it exactly

JL's own amplifiers line up well with this driver. The JL Audio JD500/1 is rated at 250 W into 4 Ω at 14.4 V, exactly the driver's continuous rating, and 225 W at 12.5 V, so voltage sag at idle costs little. Five-channel system amps work too: the RD900/5 sub channel delivers 225 W into 4 Ω (200 W at 12.5 V), and the JD700/5 180 W, both inside JL's 75–250 W window.

At 83.24 dB the 8W3v3-4 is 2.75 dB more sensitive than the 6.5-inch 6W3v3-4, so it doesn't need huge power to sound convincing in a closed cabin. Set the gain with a test tone rather than by ear, and low-pass it at around 80 Hz so it doesn't compete with the door speakers.

Running one sub or a pair

Because each 8W3v3-4 has a single 4 Ω coil, a pair wired in parallel presents 2 Ω. That's where JL's amplifiers make their most power: the JD500/1 and the RD900/5 sub channel are both rated at 500 W into 2 Ω at 14.4 V, so each driver gets its full 250 W.

Two sealed boxes of 8.5 litres total 17 litres, still well under the 31.8 litres JL recommends for one sealed 12W3v3-4, although two 8-inch cones have less combined radiating area than one 12-inch. A pair suits owners who want more output without a big box, and the two enclosures can be split between two smaller spaces.

What owners say about the JL Audio 8W3v3-4

When we checked in October 2026, OnlineCarStereo had five dated customer reviews of this driver, from 2010 to 2025. The theme is consistent: owners say it hits hard for an 8-inch, compare its impact with larger 10- and 12-inch subs, and describe deep, powerful bass. One owner running a pair reported surprising depth for their size, and another planned to add a second unit.

None of the five recorded a complaint. That is encouraging but still a small sample, and we found no independent measurements of the 8W3v3-4. If you run one, we'd like to hear how it performs in your car.

8W3v3-4 vs 6W3v3-4, 12W3v3-4 and 10W0v3-4

Against the JL Audio 6W3v3-4 (₹35,990), the 8-inch costs ₹4,000 more and needs twice the sealed volume (8.5 L against 4.2 L), but it handles 250 W rather than 150 W and is 2.75 dB more sensitive. Unless space is truly tight, the 8 is the better buy. The 12W3v3-4 (₹59,990) is the step up for real output, with 500 W handling and 87.15 dB sensitivity, but it needs 169 mm of depth and a much bigger box.

The interesting rival is the budget 10W0v3-4 (₹16,490). It costs less than half as much, handles 300 W and is more sensitive at 84.07 dB, but JL wants an 18.41-litre sealed box for it, more than twice the 8W3v3-4's, plus 124 mm of depth. If you have the space, the 10 is the value choice; if you don't, the 8 is the one that fits. The thin-line 10TW1-4 (₹45,990) is another compact option, with a 9.91-litre sealed box and 111 mm of depth.

Who should buy it, and who shouldn't

Buy the 8W3v3-4 if you want proper bass from a compact box, plan to use a 250 W amplifier channel (or 500 W for a pair), and want to keep most of your boot. It is a sensible first sub for hatchbacks and compact sedans.

Look elsewhere if you want loud, deep bass in a big SUV, where a 12-inch driver will do more with the space, or if budget matters more than box size, where the 10W0v3-4 is cheaper and more sensitive.

Installation notes for Indian cars

An 8.5-litre box with 118 mm of driver depth leaves plenty of room in most boots, and depending on the car it can sometimes go in a side well or behind a rear seat. Measure before you build, and ask us to check if you're unsure. Fix the box firmly, because even a small enclosure turns into a projectile in a hard stop.

Route the power cable away from factory wiring, fuse it near the battery, and give the amplifier airflow in a boot that heats up in summer. VA3 Car Studio in Ghaziabad can advise on a compact sealed or ported box, wire one or two subs and set the gains.

8W3v3-4 price and where to buy

The JL Audio 8W3v3-4 has an MRP of ₹39,990 in the 2026 Indian price list. VA3 Car Studio often sells below MRP, so check the current offer on our 8W3v3-4 product page. It is a genuine JL Audio product, built in the USA with imported and domestic components.

The bottom line

The 8W3v3-4 is the sensible middle of JL's small-sub range: an 8.5-litre box, 250 W handling and amplifier matches that line up exactly with JL's own JD500/1 and RD900/5. Owners consistently say it hits harder than its size suggests, though the evidence is a handful of reviews rather than independent tests. If a 10 or 12 won't fit, start here.

JL Audio 8W3v3-4 FAQ

What amplifier is best for the JL Audio 8W3v3-4?

JL recommends 75 to 250 W RMS into 4 Ω. The JL JD500/1 is rated at exactly 250 W into 4 Ω at 14.4 V, and the sub channels of the RD900/5 (225 W) and JD700/5 (180 W) also fit.

What box does the 8W3v3-4 need?

JL recommends 0.30 cu ft (8.5 litres) sealed or 0.35 cu ft (9.9 litres) ported and tuned to 35 Hz. The driver needs 118 mm of mounting depth and a 180 mm cutout.

Can one amplifier run two 8W3v3-4 subs?

Yes. Wired in parallel, two of them present 2 Ω, where the JD500/1 and the RD900/5 sub channel are both rated at 500 W at 14.4 V, or 250 W per driver.

Is the 8W3v3-4 better than the 10W0v3-4?

Not on output per rupee: the 10W0v3-4 costs less than half as much and is more sensitive. The 8W3v3-4 wins on box size, needing 8.5 litres sealed against 18.41 litres, so it is the better choice where space is limited.
