Updated: Oct 6

The JL Audio RD900/5 is a five-channel Class D system amplifier that puts four speaker channels rated at 70 W x 4 into 4 Ω and a subwoofer channel rated at 500 W into 2 Ω (both at 14.4 V) into a single 372 mm chassis, using JL's NexD switching design. With an MRP of ₹79,990 it is the most affordable model in the RD range, and it suits owners who want front speakers, rear speakers and a subwoofer powered from one amplifier, with one power cable and one fuse. Today's price is on our RD900/5 five-channel amplifier page.

JL Audio RD900/5 five-channel Class D system amplifier

In brief

  • Four main channels at 70 W into 4 Ω or 100 W into 2 Ω, plus a subwoofer channel at 225 W into 4 Ω, 325 W into 3 Ω or 500 W into 2 Ω (14.4 V).

  • The 900 W in the name matches the 2 Ω figures added together (4 x 100 W plus 500 W); the sub channel only reaches 500 W with a 2 Ω load.

  • A single 372 x 177 x 54 mm chassis, protected by one 80 A fuse, replaces what would otherwise be two amplifiers.

  • Six owner reviews describe it as powerful, clear, trouble-free and good value; none raises a complaint.

Figures come from JL Audio's RD900/5 owner's manual and the 2026 Indian catalogue, which prints 70 W x 4 into 4 Ω plus 500 W into 2 Ω. Note that those two catalogue figures use different loads: at 4 Ω on every channel, the total is 280 W plus 225 W.

Five channels, one complete system

The RD900/5 is designed so a single amplifier can run a whole car. Channels 1–2 drive the front speakers, channels 3–4 the rears, and the fifth channel the subwoofer. That means one power cable, one earth and one fuse to plan, instead of two amplifiers and their wiring.

The speaker channels suit JL's mid-range sets well. The C2-650 components are rated at 60 W with 15–100 W recommended, and the matching C2-650x coaxials share that range, so 70 W per channel into 4 Ω is a comfortable fit front and rear. The C1-650, with a 10–75 W recommendation, works too for a tighter budget.

The main channels only offer high-pass filters, which tells you their job: keeping bass out of door speakers. Set them to around 80 Hz and leave the low end to the subwoofer channel and its own 50–500 Hz low-pass.

The subwoofer channel: 500 W needs 2 Ω

Read the subwoofer figures carefully, because the headline 500 W applies only to a 2 Ω load. A single 4 Ω subwoofer receives 225 W, less than half. To get the full output, use a dual-4 Ω driver wired in parallel: the 600 W JL Audio 10W6v3-D4 then receives 500 W, comfortably inside its rating.

A single 4 Ω sub isn't a mistake if it is the right size. The 250 W 8W3v3-4 is almost an exact match for 225 W, and its recommended sealed box is only 8.5 litres, which suits a hatchback boot. A 500 W, 4 Ω driver such as the 12W3v3-4, on the other hand, would be left well short of its rating.

At 12.5 V, which a car's voltage can fall to when idling with the AC on, the sub channel drops to 350 W into 2 Ω while the speaker channels still give 60 W each into 4 Ω, so on paper bass is the first thing to soften in heavy traffic.

Inputs, factory head units and tuning

The differential-balanced RCA inputs accept 200 mV to 8 V RMS. JL's specifications that we have list no processing beyond the filters, so a separate DSP is the route to time alignment and fine EQ. With a factory touchscreen, JL's documents that we have don't say the inputs accept speaker-level signals, so plan on a line-level feed for front and rear: the two-channel LoC22 converts one pair, so a four-channel feed needs two of them or an integration DSP such as JL's FiX 86. The catalogue lists JL's RBC-1 remote as compatible with RD amplifiers if you want a bass level control at the dashboard.

What owners and reviewers say about the JL Audio RD900/5

When we checked in October 2026, OnlineCarStereo had six owner reviews dated from November 2019 to February 2025. Owners describe powerful, clear output and trouble-free operation, and value it as a single amplifier running both speakers and a subwoofer. Fast shipping also gets a mention, though that reflects the retailer rather than the amplifier, and one reviewer had not yet installed it.

No complaints were recorded. The site says it can take down negative reviews it judges unproven, so six reviews without a complaint are encouraging rather than conclusive, and we found no independent bench tests. If you run an RD900/5 in India, we'd like to hear how it has coped with the heat.

RD900/5 vs JD700/5 and VX1000/5i

The JD700/5 is the cheaper five-channel option at ₹69,990 MRP. Its main channels are rated slightly higher at 75 W x 4 into 4 Ω, but its subwoofer channel makes 180 W into 4 Ω and 300 W into 2 Ω, against the RD's 225 W and 500 W. If bass matters, the extra ₹10,000 for the RD900/5 buys a stronger sub channel, most clearly at 2 Ω.

At the other end, the VX1000/5i is rated at 100 W x 4 plus 600 W, all into 2 Ω, and builds in a DSP, for ₹1,99,990 MRP. It suits buyers who want processing in the same box. Two compact XDM amplifiers, the XDM400/4 and XDM600/1, would add marine-grade construction but cost ₹1,79,980 together at MRP.

Who should buy it, and who shouldn't

Choose the RD900/5 if you want a complete front, rear and subwoofer system from one amplifier, with simple wiring and a single 80 A circuit. It suits hatchbacks, sedans and compact SUVs where space for two amplifiers is hard to find.

Look elsewhere if you want DSP tuning built in, a subwoofer channel bigger than 500 W, or marine-grade, corrosion-resistant construction. And if you'll only ever run a single 4 Ω subwoofer that needs more than 225 W, a separate monoblock makes more sense.

Installation notes for Indian cars

The RD900/5 shares the RD1000/1's 372 x 177 x 54 mm footprint, so the same mounting spots work: a rear seat back, a side wall of the boot, or a custom board in many hatchbacks and SUVs. Allow airflow over the slotted top, and avoid sealed, sun-baked corners of the boot. The catalogue photo shows several speaker terminal blocks, so label each pair of speaker leads before connecting.

Fit an inline fuse close to the battery (JL lists 80 A for this amp) and choose cable to suit the run; 4 AWG is a sensible size for shorter runs. Earth the amplifier to bare metal nearby, keep signal and power wiring well apart, and set gains with a test tone. If you'd like it fitted for you, VA3 Car Studio carries out professional installations in Ghaziabad.

The bottom line

The RD900/5 is a practical way to power a whole system from one chassis, with 70 W speaker channels and a subwoofer channel that is genuinely strong, provided you give it a 2 Ω load. Owners rate it as powerful and trouble-free. If you need built-in DSP or more than 500 W of bass, look higher up JL's range.

JL Audio RD900/5 FAQ

Can the JL Audio RD900/5 power a whole car system?

Yes. Its four main channels drive front and rear speakers at 70 W each into 4 Ω, and the fifth channel powers a subwoofer at up to 500 W into 2 Ω. One amplifier, one fuse and one power cable cover the whole system.

How much power does the RD900/5 subwoofer channel give a 4 Ω sub?

JL rates it at 225 W into 4 Ω, 325 W into 3 Ω and 500 W into 2 Ω at 14.4 V. For the full 500 W, wire a dual-4 Ω subwoofer in parallel to 2 Ω.

Can I add a DSP to the RD900/5 later?

Yes. JL's specifications that we have list no processing beyond its high-pass and low-pass filters, so an external DSP can feed the RCA inputs, which accept 200 mV to 8 V RMS, and take care of time alignment and EQ.
