JL Audio C1-525x Review: The 5.25-Inch C1 Coaxial and What to Check Before Fitting
Updated: Oct 6
The JL Audio C1-525x is JL's 5.25-inch two-way coaxial: a mineral-filled polypropylene woofer with a 19 mm aluminium-dome tweeter, rated at 50 W RMS into 4 Ω with 89 dB sensitivity. Its 2026 Indian MRP is ₹13,490, placing it between the 4-inch C1-400x and the 6.5-inch C1-650x in JL's C1 range. It is built for factory 5.25-inch locations, found in the rear doors of some cars and the front doors of others, and suits owners who want a clear step up from stock without modifying the door. Check two numbers before ordering, a 119 mm cutout and 62 mm of depth; our C1-525x product page lists the full specifications.

Key points before you buy
Fitment figures: a 119 mm mounting hole and 62 mm of mounting depth, which is deeper than the 53 mm the 6.5-inch C1 models need.
50 W RMS with a recommended 10–75 W per channel; at 89 dB, head-unit power works and a small amplifier adds headroom.
Response is rated from 54 Hz to 24 kHz, so a subwoofer still makes sense for deep bass.
Owner feedback is limited to five reviews on one retailer's site, all positive, so the track record is short.

These are JL Audio's own figures from Garmin Hong Kong's C1-525x product page, and the 2026 Indian catalogue agrees on 50 W RMS and 4 Ω. JL's published outer frame diameter is printed inconsistently, with the inch and millimetre values disagreeing, so we've left it out: measure the space around your opening, or ask us to, rather than relying on that number.
Fitment first: cutout, depth and adapters
The C1-525x needs a 119 mm hole. Factory 5.25-inch speakers often sit in plastic brackets or carriers fixed to the door, and their screw pattern often doesn't match an aftermarket frame, so plan on an adapter ring. A good ring holds the speaker flat and seals it to the door; a poor one leaks air around the frame and costs midbass.
Depth is the number people miss. At 62 mm, this 5.25-inch speaker needs 9 mm more room behind its mounting face than the 6.5-inch C1-650x, which needs 53 mm. Wind the window fully down and check the clearance to the glass before you buy. A thicker adapter ring buys depth, but it can push the frame into the door trim.
Some owners are tempted to squeeze a 6.5-inch speaker into a 5.25-inch location with a large spacer. Occasionally it works. If it means cutting metal, compromising the door seal or leaving the speaker poorly supported, a properly mounted 5.25-inch will sound better than a badly mounted 6.5-inch.
Head-unit power, and when to add an amplifier
At 89 dB the C1-525x is reasonably efficient: 4.5 dB more sensitive than the 4-inch C1-400x and 1.5 dB short of the 6.5-inch C1-650x. Most head units, factory or aftermarket, produce well under 25 W RMS per channel once you ignore the peak figure on the box, which puts them at the low end of JL's recommended 10–75 W. That's enough for sensible listening levels, but not much more.
An amplifier brings two things: headroom before distortion, and control over what each speaker plays. The JL Audio JD400/4 fits neatly, delivering 60 W per channel at 12.5 V and 75 W at 14.4 V, inside JL's recommended range. Its inputs accept speaker-level signals, so it can be fed straight from a factory touchscreen. With an amplifier that takes only RCA inputs, a converter such as the JL Audio LoC22 (₹15,990 MRP) does that job and has automatic turn-on sensing.
Once a subwoofer joins the system, high-pass the C1-525x at around 70–80 Hz. A 5.25-inch cone that isn't asked for deep bass plays louder and cleaner, and a driver such as the JL Audio 12W0v3-4 (₹18,490 MRP, 300 W RMS) can take everything below that.
JL Audio C1-525x owner reviews
Independent feedback on this exact model is thin. When we checked in October 2026, the only owner reviews we could find were on OnlineCarStereo, which shows five reviews dated April 2023 to October 2025 and no overall star rating.
All five are positive. Owners describe very good sound for an entry-level price, clear and detailed highs, solid bass for the size and a well-balanced midrange, and they call it a big upgrade over stock speakers. They found installation easy, and the yellow cone gets a mention for its looks. One pair went into a Mustang, and another replaced a truck's stock speakers.
Nobody posted a complaint, but five reviews on a site that moderates its reviews is a small, favourable sample rather than a verdict. If you've fitted a pair, we'd like to hear how they've held up. For a larger pool of owner feedback on a speaker with the same cone material and tweeter, see our review of the 6.5-inch C1-650x.
C1-525x against the C1-650x, C1-400x and the C2 line
If your door can take a 6.5-inch speaker with a sensible adapter, the C1-650x is the better buy for ₹500 more (₹13,990 MRP). It plays deeper on paper (48 Hz against 54 Hz), is more sensitive at 90.5 dB, needs less depth at 53 mm and comes with adapter brackets in the box. Its catch is a larger 128 mm hole.
Going smaller, the C1-400x (₹12,490 MRP) is only for 4-inch openings. It is shallower at 46 mm, but its 35 W rating and 84.5 dB sensitivity make it the weaker performer, so it's no substitute where a 5.25-inch fits.
JL's C2 range has no 5.25-inch model in the 2026 Indian catalogue, so the C1-525x is JL's option at this size. The nearest C2, the C2-650x coaxial (₹22,990 MRP), brings a 19 mm silk-dome tweeter and 60 W RMS handling, but it needs a 141 mm hole and the same 62 mm depth, so it only applies if your opening can be enlarged for a 6.5-inch. Our JL Audio C2-650 review explains what the C2's silk tweeters add to a front stage. For a 5.25-inch opening, that extra money is better spent on door damping and a small amplifier.
Who it suits, and who should pass
It suits cars with factory 5.25-inch openings, front or rear, where the owner wants clearer highs and firmer bass than stock without cutting metal. It also makes a sensible rear-door partner for the C1-650 component set up front, since the cone material and tweeter type match.
Pass on it if your door can properly take a 6.5-inch speaker, where the C1-650x is the better buy, or if there's less than 62 mm of depth behind the mounting face. It's also the wrong choice if you expect deep bass from a 5.25-inch door speaker without a subwoofer.
Installation notes for Indian cars
Doors in Indian cars take a beating: monsoon water runs inside the door through the window seals, dust follows the same path, and broken roads shake everything loose. Fit a water shield or foam baffle behind the speaker, seal the adapter ring with foam tape, and tie down the wiring so it can't slap against the door.
Damping the outer door skin around the opening is among the cheapest midbass upgrades for a 5.25-inch speaker, because a resonating panel wastes part of the output you paid for. Use vehicle-specific harness adapters where they exist, so the factory wiring stays intact. VA3 Car Studio offers professional installation in Ghaziabad and can check your car's openings and depth before you order.

Verdict
The JL Audio C1-525x is a straightforward, sensible upgrade for 5.25-inch openings: efficient enough for head-unit power, comfortable with a modest amplifier, and liked by the few owners who have reviewed it. Its 62 mm depth is the one fitment surprise, so measure before you buy. And if your door can genuinely take a 6.5-inch speaker, spend the extra ₹500 on the C1-650x instead.
JL Audio C1-525x FAQ
Is the JL Audio C1-525x a direct fit for factory 5.25-inch speakers?
Often, but not always. It needs a 119 mm hole and 62 mm of mounting depth, and many factory speakers sit in brackets that call for an adapter ring, so measure first or ask us to check your car.
Does the C1-525x need an amplifier?
No, its 89 dB sensitivity lets it play well on head-unit power. JL recommends 10–75 W per channel, so a small amplifier adds clean headroom and lets you filter deep bass away from the woofer.
Should I fit a 6.5-inch speaker instead?
If your opening takes a 6.5-inch speaker without major modification, yes: the C1-650x costs ₹500 more and plays deeper. If it doesn't, a properly mounted C1-525x should outperform a 6.5-inch forced in on large spacers.
