JL Audio C2-650x Review: 6.5-Inch Coaxial Specs, Fit and Owner Feedback
Updated: Oct 6
The JL Audio C2-650x is a 6.5-inch (165 mm) two-way coaxial speaker, with a 19 mm silk-dome tweeter mounted at the centre of a mineral-filled polypropylene woofer, built to replace factory 6.5-inch speakers without mounting separate tweeters. JL's ratings are 60 W RMS at 4 Ω, 91 dB sensitivity and a 59 Hz to 22 kHz response. Its Indian MRP is ₹22,990 a pair, above the C1-650x coaxial (₹13,990) and below the C2-650 component set (₹32,990). It is aimed at owners after a clear step up from factory sound who want to keep the install simple and the doors looking stock. Today's offer is on our C2-650x coaxial speaker page.

The short version
A drop-in coaxial with a silk tweeter rather than the aluminium dome of JL's cheaper C1 coaxials.
Owner ratings are strong: 4.8 out of 5 from 22 eBay ratings, and about 85 per cent five-star at Sonic Electronix.
It needs a 141 mm hole and 62 mm of depth, noticeably more than the C1-650x, so check your door first.
Deep bass needs a subwoofer, a point some owners themselves make.

Specifications are from JL's official C2-650x page on Garmin's Hong Kong site (JL Audio is a Garmin brand) and the 2026 Indian catalogue. One catalogue quirk: the caption under this model's heading is misprinted as C2-650, which is the name of JL's component set. The coaxial is the C2-650x.
Why a good coaxial still makes sense
Component sets get most of the attention, but a well-made coaxial solves real problems. There is no tweeter to mount in the A-pillar and usually no trim to cut, so the install is quicker, cheaper and fully reversible. That matters on a new car, a company car, or one you plan to sell in a few years.
The trade-off is height. A coaxial's tweeter fires from wherever the factory put the door speaker, usually low down, so the sound tends to come from your knees rather than the dashboard. A DSP's time alignment and EQ can lift the image somewhat, but a coaxial will never place vocals as high as a pillar-mounted tweeter. The C2-650x is also a natural rear-door speaker behind a C2 component set, since JL publishes the same core figures for both.
Head-unit power, then an amplifier
At 91 dB, the C2-650x is easy to drive, and the owner reviews reflect that: most Sonic Electronix reviewers run theirs on aftermarket head units, and eBay buyers single out the jump over factory speakers. A factory touchscreen with a modest built-in amplifier should play it cleanly at moderate volumes.
An amplifier is still the better long-term plan. JL recommends 15 to 100 W per channel, and an amplifier in the middle of that band gives the tweeter clean power when you turn up the volume on the highway. A five-channel amplifier such as the JL Audio JD700/5, with 75 W on each of four channels plus a 180 W subwoofer channel at 4 Ω, can drive front and rear pairs and an affordable 10-inch subwoofer like the 10W0v3-4 from one chassis. Keep the gains sensible: the 60 W RMS rating is a real limit, and some owners point out that it narrows the amplifiers you can pair with it. If you keep the factory head unit, the LoC22 line output converter gives an aftermarket amplifier a clean signal.
What owners and reviewers say about the JL Audio C2-650x
Owner feedback on this speaker stretches back more than 15 years (JL has sold it as the C2-650x since 2009 or earlier), and the earliest comments may refer to older production. Our survey of the sources, done in October 2026, turned up the following.
eBay's catalogue page shows 4.8 out of 5 stars from 22 product ratings, 20 of them five-star and one two-star, with written reviews dated 2017 to 2022 and one from 2026. Buyers with verified purchases describe clear, high-quality sound, an easy install and good value, and call them a big improvement on factory speakers and other brands they had tried. One buyer felt they beat pricier amplified alternatives. The only criticism noted was one buyer's disappointment that this tier of JL speaker is made in China.
The Sonic Electronix review page, with reviews from July 2009 to April 2025, shows about 85 per cent five-star ratings, 12 per cent four-star and 4 per cent three-star, with no lower scores; it doesn't display the total count. Owners praise crisp sound across genres, high volume without distortion, sturdy build down to the rubber-covered magnet, and surprisingly good bass for a coaxial. Their reservations are practical: deep bass still needs a subwoofer or rear 6x9s, the plastic grilles feel less durable than premium models, the 60 W rating limits amplifier choice, and the magnet made fitting awkward in some vehicles.
An Arizona JL dealer's C1 and C2 comparison names the C2-650x but comments on the C2 line as a whole, based on in-store demos; since the dealer sells JL, read it as promotional. Its view is that the C2 range is smooth with wide frequency coverage, sounds better in a car than on a demo board, and is recommended over the C1 for sound quality, especially with an amplifier.
How it compares: C1-650x, C2-650 and C2-690tx
The JL Audio C1-650x costs ₹13,990 MRP and is rated at 50 W with 90.5 dB sensitivity and a 19 mm aluminium tweeter. Bass extension isn't a reason to step up, since JL quotes the C1-650x lower, at 48 Hz. The C2's case rests on its silk tweeter, 10 W more power handling and a higher 100 W ceiling for amplifier pairing. The C1 is also physically smaller, with a 128 mm hole and 53 mm depth, which can decide the matter in a shallow door.
The JL Audio C2-650 component set carries the same published ratings but separates the tweeter, with outboard crossovers and tweeter level settings, for ₹32,990. If you can mount tweeters up high, it will image better; if not, the coaxial saves ₹10,000 and an afternoon of trim work. For factory 6x9 openings, the three-way C2-690tx is the matching C2 option, rated at 70 W and 93 dB.
Good fit, poor fit
Buy the C2-650x if you want a big improvement over factory door speakers without cutting trim, you are running a head unit now with an amplifier in mind, or you need rear speakers to match a C2 front stage.
Choose something else if you want the soundstage up at dashboard height, which needs a component set, or your doors are shallow and the C1-650x's smaller frame fits better. It is also the wrong buy if your priority is bass from the doors alone; some owners say a subwoofer completes the picture.
Fitting the C2-650x in Indian cars
Measure before you order. JL specifies a 141 mm mounting hole, a 165 mm frame and 62 mm of depth, and factory speakers in Indian cars often sit on plastic brackets sized for slimmer units. An adapter ring usually solves that, but some owners found the magnet made fitting awkward, so check depth and glass travel with the window fully down.
While the door card is off, apply damping to the outer skin and seal the large service holes; a coaxial gains more from a solid, quiet door than from anything else at this price. Use a foam ring around the frame so the speaker seals against the door card, which also stops buzzes on rough roads. If the speakers will sit behind the factory grille, the owner complaint about plastic grilles won't matter. VA3 Car Studio in Ghaziabad can supply the right adapter and fit the C2-650x for you.
Price and where to buy
The JL Audio C2-650x carries an MRP of ₹22,990 a pair in the 2026 Indian catalogue. We frequently sell below that figure; see the current price on our C2-650x store listing. These are genuine JL Audio speakers.
Verdict
The C2-650x does the simple thing well: it is designed to drop into a factory 6.5-inch location, runs happily on head-unit power, and brings a silk tweeter and JL build quality to a door that may never see a component set. Owner ratings are consistently high, and the caveats owners raise (light deep bass, plastic grilles and a bulky magnet) are known and manageable. Add a subwoofer and, in time, a modest amplifier, and it is one of the easiest upgrades to recommend in JL's range.
JL Audio C2-650x FAQ
Is the JL Audio C2-650x a direct fit for factory 6.5-inch locations?
It is designed as an upgrade for factory 6.5-inch locations, but it needs a 141 mm mounting hole and 62 mm of depth, more than JL's C1-650x. Many cars need an adapter ring, so ask us to check yours before ordering.
Can I run the C2-650x without an amplifier?
Yes. Its 91 dB sensitivity suits head-unit power, and most Sonic Electronix reviewers run theirs on aftermarket head units. An amplifier within JL's recommended 15 to 100 W per channel adds headroom for louder listening.
Do the C2-650x speakers need a subwoofer?
For deep bass, yes. Some owners rate the bass highly for a 6.5-inch coaxial, but others say a subwoofer or rear 6x9s are needed for the lowest notes, and JL rates them down to 59 Hz.
