Updated: Oct 6

The JL Audio C2-690tx is a 6x9-inch three-way coaxial speaker that puts a woofer, a midrange and a 19 mm silk-dome tweeter into one oval frame, rated at 70 W RMS into 4 Ω with 93 dB sensitivity and a 53 Hz to 22 kHz response. Its Indian MRP is ₹33,990 a pair, making it the most expensive of the three C2 models in JL's 2026 Indian catalogue, and also the most sensitive. It is meant for factory 6x9 openings and for owners who want a speaker that works well on head-unit power. Prices and details are on our C2-690tx 6x9 three-way coaxial page.

JL Audio C2-690tx 6x9-inch three-way coaxial speaker

Highlights

  • At 93 dB, it is the easiest C2 speaker to drive, which makes it a strong rear-fill or head-unit-powered choice.

  • Owner ratings are good but more mixed than for the 6.5-inch C2 models: 4.8 out of 5 from 33 eBay ratings, with lower durability and value scores at Sonic Electronix.

  • It needs 78 mm of mounting depth, so clearance behind a door or parcel shelf has to be checked.

  • JL's 15 to 125 W recommended amplifier range gives plenty of room for a modest amplifier.

These figures come from JL's official C2-690tx listing on Garmin Hong Kong's website and the 2026 Indian catalogue. That page didn't show the mounting-hole figure clearly, so we've left it out, and it doesn't describe the midrange driver separately. The catalogue's caption for this model is misprinted as C2-650; the listing is for the 6x9 three-way.

Three drivers in one oval frame

A three-way coaxial adds a dedicated midrange driver to the usual woofer and tweeter, so no single driver has to cover the whole range. In a 6x9 the oval woofer also has noticeably more cone area than a round 6.5-inch unit, which is where its extra bass and output come from.

JL's published details cover the woofer and tweeter. The woofer cone is mineral-filled polypropylene, driven by a 32 mm voice coil (larger than the C2-650x's 25 mm), and like the other C2 models it uses a 19 mm silk-dome tweeter. The midrange's size and material aren't listed, so we won't guess at them.

Where a 6x9 fits in an Indian car

Factory 6x9 openings turn up in some doors and in the rear parcel shelves of sedans; in other cars they go into custom boot panels or pods. The C2-690tx works in either role. As rear fill, its 93 dB sensitivity means it keeps pace with the front speakers without much power, which helps passengers on long family drives without pulling the stage backwards.

As a front speaker in a large door opening, it brings more bass than a 6.5-inch coaxial, though its tweeter still fires from door level. In a hot Indian summer, a parcel shelf under the rear windscreen is one of the warmest spots in the car, so keep the factory grille or a proper cover over it to block direct sun.

93 dB and what it means for power

A 2 dB advantage over the C2-650x's 91 dB rating means the C2-690tx needs only about 60 per cent of the power to play equally loud, and OnlineCarStereo reviewers report it working on both head-unit and amplifier power. Running it from a factory touchscreen as rear fill is a reasonable start.

For a full system, JL's RD900/5 is a neat match: its four main channels deliver 70 W each at 4 Ω, exactly the C2-690tx's rating, and its fifth channel delivers 500 W at 2 Ω. That suits a dual 4 Ω subwoofer like JL's 10W6v3-D4 with its coils wired in parallel. Set gains carefully: a few owners report tweeter failures, and while the reviews don't say why, clipping from an overdriven amplifier or head unit is a common cause of tweeter damage generally.

What owners and reviewers say about the JL Audio C2-690tx

Reviews of the C2-690tx go back to 2010, so the oldest may describe earlier production. Here is the picture as of October 2026, and it is more mixed than for the 6.5-inch C2 models.

On eBay, a seller's listing shows catalogue-level ratings of 4.8 out of 5 from 33 ratings: 29 five-star, one four-star, two three-star and one two-star. Buyers praise very clean, clear sound compared with other brands, good mid-bass, a straightforward install and brand quality they feel is worth the price; one found the bass strong enough to question needing a subwoofer. The single complaint was that they don't play as loud as some alternatives.

The Sonic Electronix reviews, dated January 2011 to May 2026, are the most critical. About 76 per cent are five-star, 14 per cent four-star and 10 per cent three-star, and its category scores are lowest for value (4.3) and durability (4.2); the total count isn't shown. Owners like the clear, balanced, low-distortion sound and the step up from factory and budget speakers, and some say theirs have survived hard use. Others found the midrange rough, with male vocals sounding scratchy, or the bass deep but loosely defined. A few reported tweeters failing within months, some hit installation snags such as a wrong harness or a tight fit, and others noted that results vary a lot with the enclosure and amplifier.

OnlineCarStereo's reviews, dated 2010 to 2019 and mostly from 2010 to 2014, are warmer: clean, clear sound across the range, no distortion on amplifier power, good balance of bass, mids and highs, and solid build. One reviewer found the highs unclear and the bass below expectations. The retailer moderates its reviews, so treat them as a favourable sample. A JL dealer's series-level C1 versus C2 comparison refers to this model but discusses the C2 range as a whole, calling it smooth with wide coverage; as dealer content, it is promotional.

C2-690tx vs C1-690x and C2-650x

The JL Audio C1-690x is the two-way 6x9 alternative at ₹19,990 MRP, with a 25 mm aluminium-dome tweeter, a 60 W rating and 91.5 dB sensitivity. On paper it even reaches lower, to 39 Hz against 53 Hz, and needs less depth (70 mm against 78 mm). The C2-690tx answers with a dedicated midrange, a silk tweeter, an extra 10 W of power handling and 1.5 dB more sensitivity, for ₹14,000 more.

If your car has round openings, the C2-650x is the 6.5-inch C2 coaxial, at ₹22,990, with a better owner record. For a matched system, the C2-650 component set up front with C2-690tx speakers in the rear deck puts silk-dome tweeters throughout the car.

The case for and against

Buy the C2-690tx if your car has factory 6x9 openings, you want rear fill that keeps up on modest power, or you want more bass from the doors than a 6.5-inch speaker can give. With 93 dB to work with, a factory head unit can run it comfortably.

Think twice if vocal texture matters most to you, since some owners found the midrange rough; a front component set will serve you better. The mixed durability reports and lower value scores at Sonic Electronix are worth weighing too, and the cheaper C1-690x is a fair alternative if bass extension is the priority. Check depth first: 78 mm won't clear every door.

Installing 6x9s properly

On a parcel shelf, the boot acts as the speaker's enclosure, so seal the frame to the shelf with a foam gasket and close any large gaps nearby; otherwise the rear wave cancels the front and bass disappears. Owners' remarks that results vary with the enclosure are a reminder of this. In a sedan, check that the magnet clears the boot-lid hinges through their full swing.

In a door, check the 78 mm depth against the window glass with the window fully down, and damp the door skin while it is open. Fit the correct harness adapter rather than cutting factory wiring; one owner received the wrong harness, so confirm it before the panels come off. VA3 Car Studio in Ghaziabad installs 6x9s in both parcel shelves and doors.

C2-690tx price in India and where to buy

The JL Audio C2-690tx has an MRP of ₹33,990 a pair in the 2026 Indian catalogue. Our price is usually under MRP, and the C2-690tx store listing shows today's figure. All C2-690tx pairs we supply are genuine JL Audio.

Final word

The C2-690tx is an efficient 6x9 with a silk tweeter and, by most owners' accounts, good mid-bass. It isn't flawless: reviews are more mixed than for the 6.5-inch C2 models, with criticism of the midrange and a few early tweeter failures. Fit it with a sealed mounting and sensible gains, and it makes a strong rear deck or large-door speaker that runs comfortably from modest power.

JL Audio C2-690tx FAQ

Is the JL Audio C2-690tx a three-way speaker?

Yes. JL lists it as a 6x9-inch three-way coaxial, with a woofer, a midrange and a 19 mm silk-dome tweeter in one frame. JL's published specifications don't describe the midrange driver in detail.

Will the C2-690tx work on head-unit power?

Yes. At 93 dB it is the most sensitive of the three C2 models in JL's Indian catalogue, and OnlineCarStereo reviewers report it working on both head-unit and amplifier power. An amplifier within JL's 15 to 125 W range adds headroom.

How much mounting depth does the C2-690tx need?

JL specifies 78 mm of mounting depth and a 163 x 237 mm frame. Check door-glass travel, or boot-hinge clearance under a parcel shelf, before ordering, and ask us if you're unsure about your car.
