JL Audio C1-690x Review: The 6x9 Coaxial with the Deepest Reach in India's C1 Line-up
Updated: Oct 6
The JL Audio C1-690x is JL's C1-series 6x9-inch (152 x 229 mm) two-way coaxial, pairing an oval mineral-filled polypropylene woofer with a 25 mm aluminium-dome tweeter. It handles 60 W RMS into 4 Ω, is rated at 91.5 dB and reaches down to 39 Hz, making it the most sensitive and deepest-reaching of the six C1 speakers in the 2026 Indian catalogue. Its 2026 Indian MRP is ₹19,990, the top of the C1 price list alongside the C1-650 SE. It suits cars with factory 6x9 openings, often a sedan's rear parcel shelf or the doors of some larger vehicles, where owners want fuller sound without a big system. Details are on our C1-690x product page.

Quick summary
The deepest-reaching C1, rated 39 Hz to 22 kHz, with a large oval cone and a 30 mm voice coil, bigger than the 25 mm coils in the smaller C1 coaxials.
The most sensitive C1 at 91.5 dB, with the widest recommended amplifier range in the family: 10–100 W per channel.
It needs 70 mm of mounting depth, and JL publishes the frame size (162 x 237 mm) but no cutout figure, so measure before buying.
The owner reviews we found are few but all positive, praising crisp highs, tight bass and a big step up from stock.

Figures come from JL Audio's specifications on Garmin Hong Kong's C1-690x page and the 2026 Indian catalogue, which agrees on 60 W RMS and 4 Ω. JL lists 162 x 237 mm as the frame's outer dimensions and gives no cutout size for this model, so treat that figure as the space the frame covers, not the hole it needs.
Why the 6x9 reaches deeper than any other C1
Bass output depends heavily on how much air a cone can move, and an oval 6x9 has considerably more cone area than a round 6.5-inch. JL pairs it with a 30 mm voice coil and rates the result at 60 W RMS. The payoff on paper is a 39 Hz lower limit, against 48 Hz for the 6.5-inch C1-650x.
Placement can add to that. A 6x9 in a sedan's rear parcel shelf uses the boot behind it as a large enclosure, which helps low-frequency output, provided the speaker is sealed to the shelf so the waves from its front and back can't cancel around the frame.
The tweeter is bigger too, a 25 mm dome rather than the 19 mm used in the smaller C1 coaxials. Its rated response stops at 22 kHz rather than 24 kHz, a difference that sits above what most adult ears can hear.
Power, and keeping the balance right
At 91.5 dB, the C1-690x is the most sensitive C1, though only 0.5 dB ahead of the C1-650 component sets, and owner reviews say it performs well without a dedicated amplifier. JL's recommended range of 10–100 W per channel is also the widest in the family, so it is just as happy on a four-channel amplifier such as the JL Audio JD400/4, which gives 60–75 W per channel depending on supply voltage.
Rear-deck installs carry a catch. A loud 6x9 behind you with basic factory speakers in front pulls the stereo image backwards, so the music seems to come from the parcel shelf. Keep the rear level below the front with the fader, or better, upgrade the front doors too, with C1-650x coaxials or a C1-650 component set, so the front stage leads.
If you want real bass weight without a subwoofer, this is the closest the C1 range gets. For deeper, tighter low end, a sub still does the job better: the shallow JL Audio 10TW3-D4 (₹55,990 MRP) suits a tight boot, and a five-channel amplifier such as the JL Audio RD900/5, with 70 W x 4 at 4 Ω plus a subwoofer channel, runs the speakers and a sub from one chassis.
What JL Audio C1-690x owners report
Feedback is positive but limited to two retailer pages and a dealer blog. Here's what we found when we checked in October 2026.
Four reviews posted between December 2023 and April 2024 on OnlineCarStereo describe clear, crisp sound with smooth highs and tight bass, a dramatic improvement over stock speakers and excellent value. One pair went into a 2020 Subaru Forester and one ran from an Alpine amplifier, while the others used head-unit power. The site shows no overall rating and moderates reviews, so this is a small, favourable sample.
Reviews on Sonic Electronix praise crisp, clear sound well above the factory speakers, easy installation with the included hardware, the brand's reputation and value. Our check didn't capture a rating, review count or dates for this page. The vehicles mentioned include a 2013 Toyota Highlander Limited with a factory JBL system and a 2016 Ram, and one owner used a JL amplifier.
A US JL dealer's comparison of the C1 and C2 lines covers the series rather than this model, and as dealer content it is promotional. Its view is that C1 speakers are efficient enough for head-unit power and improve with a small amplifier.
No complaints surfaced in any of these, but the samples are small. If you run a pair, we'd welcome your feedback.
C1-690x vs C2-690tx, and other C1 options
The C2-690tx (₹33,990 MRP) is JL's step-up 6x9, ₹14,000 more. It is a three-way design with a 19 mm silk-dome tweeter and a 32 mm voice coil, handles 70 W RMS (15–125 W recommended) and is rated at 93 dB, 1.5 dB more sensitive than the C1-690x.
The C1-690x still has advantages on paper. JL rates it down to 39 Hz against the C2's 53 Hz, and it needs 70 mm of mounting depth rather than 78 mm, which matters on a parcel shelf with boot-lid hinges swinging beneath it. The C2's extra driver, silk tweeter and higher power rating are worth paying for with an amplifier and a taste for a more refined top end; on head-unit power, much of its extra power handling goes unused. Our JL Audio C2-650 review explains what the C2 range's silk tweeters bring.
Watch the model names, too. JL also makes a three-way C1-690tx and a C1-690 6x9 component set; this review covers the two-way C1-690x listed in the 2026 Indian catalogue. So the superlatives here are relative to the other five C1 models in that catalogue. And if your car has round 6.5-inch openings, a 6x9 won't fit without custom work, so the C1-650x (₹13,990 MRP) is the equivalent there.
Good fit, poor fit
A good fit for cars with factory 6x9 openings, for owners who want noticeably fuller sound than stock without adding a subwoofer straight away, and for anyone with a small amplifier who wants the most output the C1 range offers.
A poor fit if your car's openings are round, if there's less than 70 mm of depth behind the mounting surface, or if the rear speakers would end up louder than a basic front stage. If you plan a high-powered amplifier and want silk-dome refinement, the C2-690tx is the better long-term buy.
Rear-deck and door installation notes
Confirm the opening first. JL publishes the frame's outer size but no cutout, and factory 6x9 openings vary, so measure the hole and the space around it, or bring the car to us. Then check depth: 70 mm has to clear whatever sits below a parcel shelf, including boot-lid hinges, or the window glass if the speaker is going into a door.
A parcel shelf sits in direct sun under the rear windscreen and takes the full heat of an Indian summer. Polypropylene handles heat better than paper, but use a proper grille to keep sunlight and dust off the cone, seal the frame with foam gasket tape, and secure the wiring so it can't buzz over broken roads.
In a door, the usual rules apply: a water shield behind the speaker for the monsoon, damping on the door skin, and a vehicle-specific harness adapter so the factory wiring stays intact. VA3 Car Studio offers professional installation in Ghaziabad if you'd rather we handle it.
C1-690x price in India
The JL Audio C1-690x carries an MRP of ₹19,990 for a pair in the 2026 Indian catalogue. VA3 Car Studio often sells below MRP, so check the current price on our C1-690x 6x9 coaxial listing. Every pair we sell is genuine JL Audio.

Summing up
On paper, the JL Audio C1-690x is the strongest performer in the C1 range: the most sensitive, the deepest-reaching and the most tolerant of amplifier power. For cars with factory 6x9 openings it is an easy, well-liked upgrade that carries more bass than any round C1. Measure the opening and keep the front stage ahead of the rear, and it makes a convincing upgrade.
JL Audio C1-690x FAQ
Can the JL Audio C1-690x replace a subwoofer?
Not entirely. It reaches down to 39 Hz on paper, deeper than any other C1 in the 2026 Indian catalogue, so it adds noticeable bass weight, but a subwoofer still delivers deeper, tighter low end at higher volume.
Will the C1-690x fit a 6.5-inch opening?
No. It is an oval 6x9 with a frame measuring 162 x 237 mm, so it needs a 6x9 opening. For round 6.5-inch locations, the C1-650x is the equivalent coaxial.
Does the C1-690x need an amplifier?
No. At 91.5 dB it is the most sensitive C1 model in the 2026 Indian catalogue, and owners report good results on head-unit power. JL's recommended range of 10–100 W per channel means a small amplifier adds useful headroom.
