JL Audio C3-650 Review: Convertible Component and Coaxial Speakers for Indian Cars
Updated: Oct 7
The JL Audio C3-650 is a 6.5-inch (165 mm) two-way speaker system that can be installed either as a component set, with the tweeters mounted separately, or as a coaxial, with each tweeter locked into the centre of its woofer. It is rated at 75 W RMS into 4 Ω, with 90 dB sensitivity, a 48 Hz to 25 kHz response and 25 mm pure silk-dome tweeters. At ₹79,990 MRP it sits roughly midway between JL's C2-650 and C6-650 sets in the 2026 Indian catalogue. It suits buyers who want a step beyond entry-level JL sound and the freedom to choose, or change, the layout later. Full details are on our C3-650 convertible speaker system page.

Key points
One kit, two layouts: a bayonet mount at the woofer centre for coaxial use, plus flush and surface fixtures for separate tweeters.
A 75 W RMS rating and 90 dB sensitivity make a four-channel amplifier of around 75 W per channel the natural partner.
Outboard crossovers offer four tweeter levels and three midrange presence settings for tuning a passive system.
We found no owner or press reviews we could verify as of October 2026, so this is a choice made on specifications.

Figures come from JL's C3-650 owner's manual (an older document hosted by a US dealer, whose core numbers match current retailer listings), our store listing and the 2026 Indian catalogue. We couldn't cross-check JL's live product page, but no source we found points to a newer C3 generation.
Component or coaxial: how the convertible design works
Most kits force a choice at the start: a coaxial keeps everything in the door but fires the tweeter from knee height, while a component set moves the tweeter up to the A-pillar, sail panel or dash for a higher, wider stage, at the cost of extra work and sometimes cut trim.
The C3-650 lets you postpone that decision. In coaxial mode each tweeter fits into the centre of the woofer on a bayonet mount, and JL's catalogue photos show it on a pivoting mount so it can be aimed towards the cabin. Switch to component mode and the same tweeter goes into one of the supplied fixtures: a flush mount needing a 47.6 mm hole and 18 mm of depth, or a 49 mm surface-mount cup for panels with no depth behind them.
That suits owners who would rather not drill an A-pillar, for example on a car under warranty or on a company lease: coaxial mode upgrades the sound without new holes for the tweeters, and the kit can move to a component layout later, perhaps when a DSP joins the system.
Inside the crossover
The outboard networks use a first-order low-pass on the woofer and a second-order high-pass on the tweeter. In plain terms, the woofer rolls off gently at 6 dB per octave while the tweeter is protected by a steeper 12 dB per octave slope, which keeps bass energy out of the delicate silk dome.
Four tweeter levels help with the two classic car problems: a tweeter that sounds bright when it fires off a raked windscreen, and one that sounds dull in coaxial mode down in the door. The three midrange presence settings adjust how forward voices and instruments sound. The manual doesn't print the dB value of each step, so set them by ear with music you know well.
The woofer uses a mineral-filled polypropylene cone, which doesn't absorb moisture the way paper can, and JL says its DMA-optimised motor and raised-frame cooling design improve power handling. The 25 mm pure silk dome is also larger than the 19 mm silk domes used across JL's C2 models.
Powering the C3-650
With 90 dB sensitivity, the C3-650 will run from a head unit, but its 75 W RMS rating leaves most of its headroom unused that way. A four-channel amplifier is the sensible plan. JL's XDM400/4 and the more affordable JD400/4 both deliver 75 W per channel at 4 Ω, a close match for the speaker's rating, leaving two channels free for rear speakers.
A DSP can add time alignment and equalisation in either layout; our step-by-step DSP set-up guide explains how. Handing everything below about 80 Hz to a subwoofer like the JL Audio 10W6v3-D4 lets the doors concentrate on midbass and vocals.
What owners and reviewers say about the JL Audio C3-650
Review coverage of the C3-650 is absent: when we checked in October 2026, we found no owner or press review whose content we could verify. We would rather say so plainly than invent a consensus.
Two sources exist, but neither gives us opinions we can report. There is a YouTube component speaker test featuring the C3-650; we couldn't open it, so we can't tell you its verdict. Crutchfield lists the C3-650, but its customer reviews load in a way we couldn't retrieve, so we can't say what, if anything, they contain. The other retailer pages we looked at had no customer reviews at all.
What remains verifiable is JL's own description, which should be read as promotional: DMA-optimised woofers, a raised-frame cooling design for power handling, pure silk-dome tweeters and true two-way outboard crossovers. If you own a C3-650, in either layout, we would like to hear how it has worked in your car.
C3-650 vs C2-650 and C6-650
The JL Audio C2-650 costs ₹32,990 MRP, well under half the price. It is a component-only set with 19 mm silk domes, rated at 60 W and 91 dB with a 59 Hz to 22 kHz response. On paper the C3 offers 15 W more power handling, a wider response at both ends and a larger tweeter, while giving up 1 dB of sensitivity. It also adds the coaxial option and finer crossover adjustment.
The JL Audio C6-650 moves to 100 W RMS and comes in passive (₹1,24,990) and active (₹1,14,990) versions, the active set dropping passive crossovers for DSP-driven systems. Its system efficiency is lower at 87.37 dB, so it needs more amplifier power for the same volume. Choose the C6 if you are building around a DSP and an amplifier channel per driver; choose the C3 for a flexible passive system. For a drop-in coaxial at a lower price, see the C2-650x.
Who should buy it, and who should look elsewhere
It suits you if you want a refined passive set with real tuning options, you have, or will buy, a 75 W-per-channel amplifier, and you value being able to start as a coaxial and move to a component layout later.
Look elsewhere if independent owner feedback matters to you before spending ₹79,990; the C2 range has a much deeper review record. If you are going fully active with a DSP, the C6-650 active set is designed for that job. And if you will only ever use head-unit power, the C3's extra power handling is wasted, so a C2 makes more sense.
Installation notes for Indian cars
Check the door before ordering: the woofer needs a 141 mm hole and 65 mm of depth, and window glass travel is the usual limit. Many doors need an adapter ring or spacer for a 6.5-inch speaker, and while the panel is off, damping the outer skin and sealing large holes will do more for midbass than any crossover setting.
In coaxial mode, aim the pivoting tweeter towards the cabin rather than straight across the footwell. In component mode, the shallow flush mount suits thin A-pillars and sail panels. Mount the crossovers somewhere dry, such as a kick panel or under the dash, rather than inside the wet side of the door, where monsoon moisture collects. VA3 Car Studio in Ghaziabad installs the C3-650 in either layout.
Price and where to buy
The JL Audio C3-650 carries an MRP of ₹79,990 in the 2026 Indian catalogue. Our selling price is often lower than MRP; check today's figure on the C3-650 store listing. Each C3-650 we supply is a genuine JL Audio set.

The bottom line
The C3-650 earns its place through flexibility: a 25 mm silk dome that can live in the door or on the pillar, a crossover with both tweeter and midrange adjustment, and a 75 W rating that pairs neatly with JL's four-channel amplifiers. The honest caveat is the lack of verified owner and press reviews. If you are comfortable buying on specifications, it is a well-equipped middle step in JL's range.
JL Audio C3-650 FAQ
Can the JL Audio C3-650 be used as a coaxial?
Yes. Each tweeter can fit at the centre of its woofer on a bayonet mount for a coaxial install, or be mounted separately as a component system. The kit includes three tweeter fixture types, so you can change layout later without buying new speakers.
Does the C3-650 need an amplifier?
Its 90 dB sensitivity means a head unit will drive it, but the 75 W RMS rating leaves headroom that only an amplifier will use. A four-channel amplifier delivering around 75 W per channel at 4 Ω, such as JL's XDM400/4 or JD400/4, is a close match.
What is the difference between the C3-650 and the C2-650?
The C3-650 has a larger 25 mm silk-dome tweeter, a 75 W rating instead of 60 W, a wider quoted response and a coaxial option. The C2-650 is component-only, 1 dB more sensitive, and costs ₹32,990 against the C3's ₹79,990 MRP.
