Recoil PW12D4 Review: 700 W RMS 12-Inch Subwoofer Against Other 12s We List

6 min read

The Recoil PW12D4 is a 12-inch dual 4-ohm subwoofer from Recoil's Echo Pro range, rated at 700 W RMS and 1,400 W peak, with a 2.5 in (63.5 mm) four-layer voice coil and an IMPP cone. Its Indian MRP is ₹20,000, which puts it between the PW10D4 (₹18,000) and the PW15D4 (₹35,000) in size and price. It suits a buyer who wants one full-size 12 and has, or plans to buy, an amplifier that lists close to 700 W RMS at 2 ohm. You can see it on our Recoil PW12D4 product page.

Recoil PW12D4 12-inch Echo Pro dual 4-ohm subwoofer

Quick summary

  • Plan around 700 W RMS. The 1,400 W in the product name is the peak figure.

  • The two 4-ohm coils wire to 2 ohm (parallel) or 8 ohm (series); choose an amplifier by its RMS rating at that load.

  • Recoil gives no box volume, but its US page lists Fs 27.4 Hz, Qts 0.48 and Vas 58.6 L, a 163.5 mm mounting depth and a 283 mm cut-out.

  • We found no owner reviews or independent tests in October 2026, so every performance figure here is Recoil's own.

Our listing and Recoil's own PW12D4 page agree on power, impedance, voice coil, cone and surround. Sensitivity, frequency response, Xmax, the Thiele/Small figures, the mounting dimensions and the wiring options come only from Recoil Audio USA's page, which gives the lower frequency limit as 26 Hz in its table and 25 Hz in a bullet.

700 W RMS and 1,400 W peak: plan around the smaller number

Recoil's page and our listing label 700 W as RMS and 1,400 W as peak, and Recoil Audio USA's table calls the larger figure MAX. The 1400W in the product name is therefore the peak rating. RMS is what the driver can take continuously, so it alone should decide your amplifier.

Recoil's page says the black high-temperature coating on the voice coils lets the woofer handle more than its rating. That is Recoil's claim, and its warranty terms, written for the US, state that blown or burned voice coils are not manufacturing defects. Treat 700 W RMS as a ceiling, set the gain against a test tone and a multimeter, and use the amplifier's subsonic filter if it has one.

Wiring the PW12D4 and choosing an amplifier

Recoil Audio USA says the dual 4-ohm coils can be wired for 2 ohm or 8 ohm. The two amplifiers below list ratings at 2 ohm and 4 ohm (the MLA-1000 also at 1 ohm) and none at 8 ohm, so parallel wiring and a 2-ohm load is the practical choice.

The Deaf Bonce Machete MLA-1000 lists 680 W RMS at 2 ohm (₹25,990 MRP), 20 W under the sub's rating, plus a subsonic filter listed as 10 – 50 Hz. The Alpine R2-A75M lists 750 W RMS at 2 ohm (₹55,999 MRP), 50 W over. Both are quoted at 14.4 V, and a car idling with the AC on can sit below that.

Box volume, depth and cut-out

None of the Recoil pages we read gives a recommended enclosure volume or type. The US page does publish what a designer models a box from: Fs 27.4 Hz, Qts 0.48, Vas 58.6 L, Sd 471.4 cm² and Xmax 14 mm. That is enough to model a sealed or a ported box, but it is not a recommendation.

For fitting, plan around a 283 mm cut-out, a 163.5 mm mounting depth (194 mm overall) and a 320.5 mm overall diameter. Recoil's page lists a custom mounting gasket for an air-tight mount; a clean, accurate cut-out helps it seal. VA3 Car Studio builds custom subwoofer enclosures, so a box can be made to suit your boot and the driver's published dimensions.

What owners and reviewers say about the Recoil PW12D4

No owner reviews or independent tests turned up when we looked in October 2026. Recoil's own PW12D4 page shows Reviews (0), and Recoil Audio USA's page shows no reviews or rating.

Our attempts to open DIYMobileAudio and Sonic Electronix search pages returned errors, Amazon blocks automated access and a CarAudioForum search came back empty, so discussion may exist that we could not read. If you run a PW12D4, leave a comment with your box, amplifier and what you hear.

How the PW12D4 stacks up against other 12-inch subwoofers

Each row uses the maker's own labels, and makers do not necessarily rate subwoofers to one common test, so read the table as a guide to class and price, not a ranking.

The MF-12S lists 100 W more RMS than the PW12D4 at a higher MRP; the ML-12R lists 200 W less at a lower one. The MF-12S and the Alpine S2-W12 come with dual 2-ohm or dual 4-ohm coils. The Hertz CS 300 has almost the same MRP but lists 350 W continuous, and one maker's continuous rating is not guaranteed to match another maker's RMS rating.

Within the Echo Pro PW range, the Recoil PW10D4 (₹18,000 MRP, 600 W RMS) lists a 9.8 mm Xmax, a 148 mm mounting depth and a 233 mm cut-out; the PW12D4 lists 14 mm, 163.5 mm and 283 mm. The Recoil PW15D4 (₹35,000 MRP, 800 W RMS) needs a 351 mm cut-out.

Who should buy the PW12D4, and who shouldn't

Buy it if you want one full-size 12-inch driver, can run an amplifier that lists around 700 W RMS at 2 ohm, and are happy to choose a box from published driver figures rather than a maker's recommended volume.

Look elsewhere if you want a maker-stated enclosure (our CS 300 listing mentions compact sealed enclosures from 32 litres), need a choice of dual 2-ohm coils, or have a small boot, where the PW10D4 is easier to place.

Installation notes for Indian cars

Measure the boot opening as well as the floor, because a finished 12-inch box has to pass through the opening. Fix the box down, since speed breakers will move a loose enclosure, and afterwards check the boot lid, number plate and parcel shelf for rattles; our sound damping guide covers the fix.

Use the cable gauge in the amplifier's manual, fit the fuse close to the battery and keep the amplifier clear of luggage, because a closed boot is hot in an Indian summer. VA3 Car Studio in Ghaziabad offers professional installation.

Price and where to buy

The PW12D4 has an India MRP of ₹20,000. VA3 Car Studio often sells below MRP, so check today's price on the PW12D4 product page. Recoil's warranty terms are written for the US, so confirm the India terms with Recoil or its distributor before you order.

The bottom line

The PW12D4 is the Echo Pro PW for buyers who want a full-size driver without the boot space the 15 demands. Its 700 W RMS rating asks for a solid amplifier and a box you choose yourself, and the performance figures we found are all Recoil's own. With that understood, it is a reasonable single-sub candidate at ₹20,000 MRP.

Recoil PW12D4 FAQ

Is the Recoil PW12D4 700 W or 1,400 W?

It is rated 700 W RMS. The 1,400 W in the product name is the peak rating, which Recoil Audio USA labels MAX. Choose the amplifier by the RMS figure at the load you wire the coils to, and set the gain carefully.

Which amplifier suits the PW12D4?

Look for a mono amplifier that lists close to 700 W RMS at 2 ohm. The Deaf Bonce MLA-1000 lists 680 W and the Alpine R2-A75M lists 750 W at 2 ohm, both at 14.4 V. Neither lists a rating at 8 ohm.

What cut-out and depth does the PW12D4 need?

Recoil Audio USA lists a 283 mm cut-out, a 163.5 mm mounting depth and a 320.5 mm overall diameter. The overall depth is 194 mm. Add the thickness of your baffle when you plan the box.
