Zapco ST-2B Review: A Budget Class AB Amp for Factory Head Units

Oct 2
6 min read

Updated: Oct 6

The Zapco ST-2B is the smallest and cheapest of the three Studio-B (ST-B) amps we list: a two-channel Class AB amplifier rated at 2 x 65 W into 4 Ω, 2 x 90 W into 2 Ω, or 180 W bridged into 4 Ω. With an Indian MRP of ₹10,990 it is an inexpensive way to upgrade a factory system one step at a time, and Zapco lists an OEM speaker-level input, so it can take its signal straight from a factory head unit. It suits a pair of front component speakers or a small subwoofer in a hatchback or compact sedan. Check today's price on our ST-2B store page.

Zapco ST-2B two-channel Class AB amplifier from the Studio-B series

Key points

  • 2 x 65 W at 4 Ω suits many 6.5-inch component sets; bridged, it gives one 4 Ω subwoofer 180 W.

  • Zapco's page lists an OEM speaker-level input, useful with factory touchscreens, although the catalogue doesn't mention it.

  • Full, low-pass and high-pass crossover plus bass boost, but no subsonic filter, so a sealed box suits bridged sub use best.

  • No verified owner reviews, and Zapco's sources differ on noise figures and on whether it has RCA outputs.

Figures come from Zapco's ST-2B product page, the ST-B Series owner's manual and the 2026 Indian catalogue, with alternative figures in brackets. Crossover frequencies, the fuse rating and the warranty aren't published in these sources.

Using it with a factory head unit

Many cars sold in India now come with a factory touchscreen that owners often want to keep, because it can run the reversing camera, steering-wheel controls and vehicle settings. The ST-2B's OEM speaker-level input lets it take that head unit's speaker outputs directly, so you can add amplifier power without a separate line output converter. Zapco's product page and our listing both show this input; the 2026 catalogue doesn't mention it, so we confirm the wiring for your car before fitting.

A factory head unit's output often carries its own equalisation, and an amplifier will faithfully make that louder. If the sound still isn't right after an amp upgrade, a DSP is the next step; our guide on how to set up a DSP in your car audio system explains the process. One more caution: the catalogue and our listing show two RCA outputs for feeding another amp, but Zapco's page lists only inputs, so ask us to confirm if you plan to chain a second amplifier.

Driving door speakers: JL pairings

At 65 W per channel into 4 Ω, the ST-2B lines up neatly with JL's C2-650 component set, rated at 60 W RMS with a recommended amplifier range of 15–100 W per channel. The C1-650 (50 W RMS, 10–75 W recommended) and the C2-650x coaxial (60 W RMS) fall within range too. With sensitivity around 91 dB, these speakers respond well to even a modest amp.

Use the high-pass setting so the doors don't waste power on deep bass they can't reproduce, and set the gain with a test tone. The 2 Ω rating also lets each channel drive two 4 Ω speakers wired in parallel, such as the front and rear on one side, with 90 W per channel shared between them.

Bridged mode for a small subwoofer

Bridged, the two channels combine into one 180 W channel for a 4 Ω load. That is a good match for JL's 8W3v3-4, a single-coil 4 Ω 8-inch rated at 250 W that JL recommends in a sealed box of just 8.5 litres. Zapco rates bridged operation for 4 Ω only, so a dual-coil sub wired to 2 Ω is off the table.

The low-pass crossover and bass boost cover the basics, but Zapco lists no subsonic filter on this model. A ported box benefits from one, because it stops the cone moving excessively below the port tuning, so a sealed enclosure is the safer choice here. If you want a dedicated sub amp with a subsonic filter, the mono ST-1B is the next step.

Zapco ST-2B reviews: what we could and couldn't find

When we checked in October 2026, independent owner reviews of the ST-2B were missing: the US retail listings we looked at had no reviews yet, and we found no press tests. The verifiable information comes from Zapco's product page and the ST-B Series owner's manual, which agree on the power figures and THD of less than 0.1% but differ on signal-to-noise (more than 90 dB against 97 dB) and frequency response.

There is a DIYMobileAudio thread comparing the ST-B, ST-X and ST-X SQ ranges, but we couldn't access it, so we can't say what members concluded. Zapco's catalogue describes the Studio-B amps as affordable everyday amplifiers built for reliability rather than competition; that is the maker's pitch, not independent evidence. If you've installed an ST-2B, we'd like to hear how it's doing.

ST-2B vs ST-5B, ST-1B and the Z-150.2 AP

The five-channel ST-5B costs ₹22,990, roughly double, and adds two more channels plus a sub channel rated at 250 W into 4 Ω: a one-box system where the ST-2B is a building block. Pairing the ST-2B with the mono ST-1B (₹15,990) gives a front stage and a dedicated sub amp for ₹26,980 at MRP.

Within Zapco's Class AB line, the Z-150.2 AP is the serious step up, rated at 2 x 150 W into 4 Ω with a quoted signal-to-noise ratio above 110 dB, but its MRP is ₹1,10,990, ten times the ST-2B's. For a first amplifier on a factory system, the ST-2B is the sensible end of that range.

Good fit, poor fit

A good fit for a first amp in a car keeping its factory touchscreen, a pair of 50–60 W component speakers, or a small sealed sub on a tight budget.

A poor fit if you want four or more channels, built-in DSP tuning, a ported sub that needs a subsonic filter, or speakers that want well over 65 W per channel. And if verified owner feedback matters to you, note that we found none.

Installation notes for Indian cars

At 230 mm long, 182 mm wide and 52 mm tall, the ST-2B is compact enough for many under-seat or behind-seat locations, though you should measure first. It is Class AB, so give it air and keep it away from spots that bake in the sun. For the speaker-level input, the factory speaker wires can be tapped at the head unit harness or a door connector; doing that neatly, without cutting into the car's main loom, is where a professional install pays off.

Its modest current draw means an 8 AWG supply such as Tchernov's 8 AWG power cable is plenty for most runs. Follow the manual for fusing, as the rating isn't in our data. VA3 Car Studio fits and tunes amplifiers like this at our Ghaziabad studio.

Price and where to buy

The 2026 Indian catalogue lists the ST-2B at an MRP of ₹10,990. VA3 Car Studio often sells below MRP, and the Zapco ST-2B product page has today's price. It is a genuine Zapco product, distributed in India by Supreme Audiotek Pvt. Ltd., New Delhi.

Our take

On paper the ST-2B does a simple job well: 65 W per channel for a front stage, 180 W bridged for a small sub, and a speaker-level input that suits factory touchscreens. It lacks a subsonic filter and DSP, its sources disagree on a few details, and we found no verified review of it. As an inexpensive first step up from head-unit power, it makes good sense.

Zapco ST-2B FAQ

Can the Zapco ST-2B power a subwoofer?

Yes. In bridged mode it delivers 180 W into a single 4 Ω load, which suits a sub such as JL's 8W3v3-4. Zapco lists no subsonic filter, so a sealed box is a better match than a ported one.

Will the ST-2B work with my factory touchscreen?

Zapco lists an OEM speaker-level input, so it can take its signal from the factory head unit's speaker outputs without a line output converter. We confirm the wiring for your specific car before installing.

Is 65 W per channel enough for component speakers?

For many 6.5-inch sets, yes. JL's C2-650 is rated at 60 W RMS with a recommended 15–100 W, and the C1-650 at 50 W RMS with 10–75 W, so the ST-2B's 65 W into 4 Ω sits within both ranges.
