Zapco ST-500XM III Review: Compact Class D Bass for a Single Subwoofer

Updated: Oct 6

The Zapco ST-500XM III is the entry point to Zapco's Studio-XM III family: a compact mono Class D bass amplifier rated at 200 W into 4 Ω, 300 W into 2 Ω and 400 W into 1 Ω. Note that the 500 in its name is not matched by its published ratings. With an Indian MRP of ₹34,990 it is the cheapest of the four XM III amps, and it makes most sense driving a single subwoofer in a hatchback, sedan or compact SUV that still runs a stock battery and alternator. You can see the current offer on the ST-500XM III listing in our store.

Zapco ST-500XM III mono Class D bass amplifier from the Studio-XM III series

At a glance

  • Its top rating is 400 W into 1 Ω; for most single-sub installs the useful figures are 300 W at 2 Ω and 200 W at 4 Ω.

  • Class D with efficiency above 85% (Zapco's figure), in a chassis 225 mm long overall and 58 mm tall.

  • Variable low-pass crossover, subsonic filter, phase and bass boost with a movable centre frequency, plus a dash-mount remote that our listing says is included.

  • No verified reviews of this exact model yet; the feedback we found covers the older ST-XM II.

Figures come from Zapco's ST-500XM III product page and the 2026 Indian catalogue. Where they disagree, we show Zapco's numbers with the catalogue's in brackets. Neither gives crossover or subsonic frequency ranges, a fuse rating or warranty terms, so ask us if you need them.

Why the 500 in the name doesn't match the ratings

Zapco's catalogue introduces its Studio-X bass line as four mono amps ranging from 500 W RMS to 2,000 W RMS, and on the three bigger models the number broadly tracks the 1 Ω rating. This one is the exception: its own catalogue table, Zapco's product page and our listing all stop at 400 W into 1 Ω. So plan around what your subwoofer will actually see, which for most buyers means 300 W at 2 Ω or 200 W at 4 Ω.

Matching it to a real subwoofer

Impedance decides how much of this amp you get to use. A single-voice-coil 4 Ω subwoofer will only ever draw the 200 W rating. A dual 4 Ω driver is more flexible: wire its two coils in parallel and the amp sees 2 Ω, which unlocks the 300 W rating.

That makes JL Audio's shallow 10TW3-D4 a natural partner. It has dual 4 Ω coils and a 400 W continuous rating, so 300 W leaves it headroom, and JL's recommended sealed box is just 14.2 litres. The 12TW3-D4 wires the same way if you can spare the 22.7-litre sealed box it asks for.

On a single 4 Ω coil, 200 W suits JL's 250 W 8W3v3-4, or a budget 12W0v3-4 working well inside its 300 W rating. The 1 Ω figure is the least useful: reaching it takes two dual 4 Ω subs, each wired to 2 Ω and then paralleled, leaving 200 W per sub. If you want two subs, look at the ST-1000XM III instead.

Controls, Class D and your car's electrics

The bass boost has a movable centre frequency (the catalogue lists it as 0/12 dB), so a lift can target your car's weak spot instead of a fixed note. The subsonic filter matters most in a ported box, where it stops the cone flapping below the port tuning. Zapco lists only RCA inputs, so a car keeping a factory touchscreen without RCA outputs needs a line output converter such as JL's LoC22, or a DSP with speaker-level inputs, in front of the amp.

Zapco also says two identical XM III amps can be strapped onto a single voice coil. With this model that is poor value: two cost ₹69,980 at MRP, more than one ST-1000XM III.

Class D output stages switch fully on and off instead of idling partly on, so far less energy becomes heat. Take Zapco's 85% efficiency at face value and the full 400 W on a test tone works out to roughly 33 A at 14.4 V, and music averages much less. A healthy stock charging system should cope with that. The ratings assume 14.4 V, though, so expect a little less output at idle with the AC running.

What owners and reviewers say about the Zapco ST-500XM III

When we checked in October 2026, we found no owner, retailer or press review of this exact model that we could verify. What does exist concerns the previous ST-XM II generation, so treat it as background rather than a verdict on this amp.

In a CarAudio.com forum thread about the ST-XM II amps, posters called them good amplifiers and credited Zapco with a solid record for quality and design. One poster was less sure, seeing Zapco's newer entry-level price tier as less proven than its traditional premium lines. Its post dates aren't confirmed.

A sharper discussion on the Steve Meade Designs forum concerns dyno runs of the older ST-1350XM II. One commenter says it came close to its rated output in only one of nine runs and fell well short in the others. We couldn't see the measurements, and it is a different model, but it is a fair reason to keep expectations realistic. Zapco's own catalogue copy about bass output is promotional. If you own an ST-500XM III, tell us how it performs in your car.

ST-500XM III vs ST-1B and JL JD500/1

The awkward comparison sits inside Zapco's own range. The Class AB ST-1B carries the same ratings at 4 Ω and 2 Ω (200 W and 300 W) for an MRP of ₹15,990, less than half the price. The ST-500XM III adds Class D efficiency, a 1 Ω rating, strapping, the movable boost frequency and, per our listing, a remote in the box (it's optional on the ST-1B). It is also smaller: 225 x 160 mm against 310 x 182 mm.

JL's JD500/1 has an MRP of ₹35,990 and is rated at 250 W into 4 Ω, 350 W into 3 Ω and 500 W into 2 Ω, which is more power at the loads single subs usually present, although JL sells its RBC-1 remote separately. Within the XM III family, the ST-1000XM III offers two and a half times the 4 Ω power for ₹15,000 more at MRP.

Who should buy it, and who shouldn't

It suits you if you want one subwoofer, a compact Class D amp that won't strain a stock electrical system, and a level knob on the dash.

Look elsewhere if price per watt comes first: the ST-1B matches its 4 Ω and 2 Ω ratings for far less, and the JD500/1 offers more at similar money. If you're planning two subwoofers or a power-hungry 12-inch, start at the ST-1000XM III. And with no verified reviews yet, buyers who want a proven track record may prefer to wait.

Installation notes for Indian cars

A chassis this size can often go under a front seat or on a boot side panel, but measure your car first and leave air around the fins. The catalogue doesn't say whether the XM III has a cooling fan, so assume it relies on convection and keep it out of direct sun through the rear glass, where a parked boot gets very hot in May and June.

Run the RCA cables down the opposite side of the car from the power cable to reduce the risk of alternator whine. Our data doesn't include the manual's fuse or cable figures, so we confirm them at install; Tchernov's 8 AWG power cable is one option, depending on run length. VA3 Car Studio installs Zapco amplifiers at our Ghaziabad studio and sets gains with a test tone to protect your subwoofer.

Price and where to buy

The ST-500XM III carries an MRP of ₹34,990 in the 2026 Indian catalogue. VA3 Car Studio often sells below MRP, so check today's price on our Zapco ST-500XM III product page. Zapco is distributed in India by Supreme Audiotek Pvt. Ltd., New Delhi, and every unit we sell is a genuine Zapco product.

The bottom line

This is a neat, efficient mono amp for one subwoofer, with sensible controls and a dash remote. Its weakness is value: the name oversells it, the ST-1B matches its usable ratings for less than half the MRP, and there is no verified owner feedback yet. Buy it for the compact Class D packaging and modest current draw, and pair it with a dual 4 Ω sub wired to 2 Ω.

Zapco ST-500XM III FAQ

Is the Zapco ST-500XM III a 500 W amplifier?

Not by its published ratings. The highest is 400 W into 1 Ω, with 300 W into 2 Ω and 200 W into 4 Ω, even though Zapco's catalogue introduction describes the Studio-X line as starting at 500 W RMS.

Which subwoofer suits the ST-500XM III best?

A single dual 4 Ω subwoofer wired to 2 Ω, which lets the amp deliver its 300 W rating. JL's 10TW3-D4 and 12TW3-D4 are both rated at 400 W, so they have headroom on this amp.

Will it work with my car's factory head unit?

Not directly if the head unit has no RCA outputs. Zapco lists only RCA inputs, so such a head unit needs a line output converter or a DSP with speaker-level inputs between it and the amp. We can suggest the right interface for your car.
