Alpine S2-S50 Review: A Hi-Res 5.25-Inch Coaxial for Smaller Door Openings

Updated: Oct 6

The Alpine S2-S50 is a 5.25-inch (13 cm) two-way coaxial speaker from Alpine's next-generation S-Series, rated at 55 W RMS and 170 W peak into 4 Ω, with 87 dB sensitivity, a 20 mm tweeter and Hi-Res Audio certification up to 40 kHz. At an Indian MRP of ₹11,999 it is the most affordable of the four S2 speakers we stock, and Alpine's US site describes it as a new standard for entry-level sound. It suits cars whose doors or rear deck take a smaller round speaker, and owners who want a clear step up from basic factory speakers on head-unit power or a small amplifier. You can see the set and today's price on our S2-S50 product page.

Alpine S2-S50 S-Series Hi-Res 5.25-inch two-way coaxial speakers

Key takeaways

  • A compact coaxial with the tweeter built in, made for 5.25-inch (13 cm) openings; Alpine UK lists a 113.4 mm cutout and a 49.9 mm mounting depth.

  • 87 dB sensitivity and a 55 W RMS rating suit head-unit power or a small amplifier with sensible gain settings.

  • The same polypropylene, glass fibre and mica cone and HAMR surround as the larger S2 coaxials, with a smaller 20 mm tweeter.

  • US owners like the sound for the size and price, but the six reviews we found are incentivised or moderated, and one says bass is limited.

What Alpine fits into a 13 cm speaker

The S2-S50 shares its cone recipe with the bigger S2 coaxials: polypropylene for moisture resistance, stiffened with glass fibre and mica. Alpine says the blend keeps the cone light while giving high output and low distortion, and Alpine UK credits larger magnets with more power handling and, in Alpine's words, the best mid-bass in its category. Those are marketing claims, not test results, but the construction is sensible for a door that sees monsoon humidity and summer heat.

The HAMR (High-Amplitude Multi-Roll) surround is meant to let the cone travel further, which matters more in a small driver with limited cone area. The tweeter is a 20 mm unit rather than the 25 mm fitted to the S2-S65 and S2-S69, and it carries the same Hi-Res certification to 40 kHz. Alpine UK says in-line crossovers keep installation simple enough to do at home.

Head-unit power, or a small amplifier?

At 87 dB, the S2-S50 is a little less sensitive than the 88 dB S2-S65, so it needs slightly more power for the same volume. On a typical head unit it will play clearly at everyday levels, which suits buyers keeping a factory touchscreen. Push a head unit hard, though, and it clips, and clipping is what damages small tweeters.

Amplifier choice needs a moment's thought. The S2-A55V gives 40 W RMS per channel into 4 Ω, comfortably inside the 55 W RMS rating, plus a subwoofer channel. The S2-A36F gives 60 W RMS per channel into 4 Ω, a touch above it. That is a small margin in practice, and one OnlineCarStereo owner running an Alpine A36F reports excellent results, but set the gains with a test tone and use the amplifier's high-pass filter so the 5.25-inch woofer isn't asked for deep bass. Our guide on the need for DSP in car audio covers the next step.

What owners and reviewers say about the Alpine S2-S50

We found six owner reviews when we checked in October 2026, all from US retailers and none independent.

OnlineCarStereo shows three reviews from February to June 2024. One owner running an Alpine A36F amplifier calls the sound excellent, with good bass for a 5.25-inch speaker and fair pricing. Another fitted them to a Corvette and says they sound terrific with an Alpine amplifier, while noting there isn't much bass. The third rates them decent for the price. The site moderates reviews to remove unproven negative comments, so read it as a favourable sample.

On Best Buy, all three reviews give five stars, with every reviewer recommending them. Owners mention an installation that went well, good sound alongside matching 6.5-inch speakers in a Toyota 4Runner, and two pairs fitted in a travel trailer. Each review carries Best Buy's label that the reviewer received promo considerations or a sweepstakes entry, and each was written after two or three weeks of ownership. Alpine's own pages are promotional. If you've fitted a pair in an Indian car, we'd like to hear how they work.

S2-S50 vs S2-S65 and the 6x9

If your doors take a 6.5-inch speaker, the S2-S65 (₹13,999 MRP) is the obvious alternative: our listing rates it at 80 W RMS and 88 dB, with a 25 mm tweeter and more cone area for bass. The S2-S50 earns its place where a 6.5-inch speaker won't fit, or as a matched pair alongside S2-S65 or S2-S65C speakers elsewhere in the car; one Best Buy owner fitted them with matching 6.5-inch speakers. For oval openings or a parcel shelf, the S2-S69 6x9 is the S-Series option we stock.

Who should buy it, and who shouldn't

Buy the S2-S50 if your car takes 5.25-inch (13 cm) speakers, you want a clear upgrade over factory cones that works on head-unit power, or you're building a matched S-Series system and need a rear pair.

Look elsewhere if your doors take 6.5-inch speakers, since the S2-S65 gives you more cone and power handling for a little more money, or if you want deep bass from the doors alone. A 5.25-inch cone is the wrong tool for that; add a subwoofer such as the 8-inch S2-W8D4 if boot space is tight.

Installation notes for Indian cars

Check the opening first. Alpine UK's 113.4 mm cutout and 49.9 mm depth are the numbers to measure against, and in a door the window glass must clear the magnet when fully down. Factory openings often need an adapter ring, and the 15.9 mm mounting height matters behind a tight door trim. Seal the speaker to its baffle with foam tape and damp the metal around it; a small cone loses its modest bass quickly to a rattling panel, and our sound damping guide covers the job. Check polarity on every speaker. VA3 Car Studio in Ghaziabad offers professional installation and can check fitment for your car before you buy.

Price and where to buy

Alpine S2-S50 - another view

The bottom line

This is a well-specified small coaxial: the S-Series cone and surround, Hi-Res certification and a 55 W RMS rating. It is easy to power from a head unit or a small amplifier, and what little owner feedback exists is positive, if not independent. Treat it as a 13 cm upgrade or a matched rear pair, add a subwoofer for bass, and you get a coherent Alpine system.

Alpine S2-S50 FAQ

Is the Alpine S2-S50 a 5-inch or a 5.25-inch speaker?

Alpine USA and Alpine India list a 5 1/4-inch woofer, while Alpine UK calls it a 13 cm (5-inch) speaker. Alpine UK's 113.4 mm cutout diameter is the figure to measure your opening against.

Can the S2-S50 run on a factory head unit?

Yes, at everyday volumes. Its 87 dB sensitivity is lower than the 88 dB S2-S65 and the 90 dB S2-S69, so it needs more power for the same loudness. An amplifier lets it play louder without the head unit clipping.

Which Alpine amplifier suits the S2-S50?

The S2-A55V's 40 W RMS channels sit inside the speaker's 55 W RMS rating and add a subwoofer output. The S2-A36F's 60 W RMS channels are slightly above the rating, so set its gains carefully and use its high-pass filter.
