DS18 EXL-TR15.4D Review: 15-Inch Triple-Stacked Sub, 2,500 W RMS and 5,000 W Max

6 min read

The DS18 EXL-TR15.4D is a 15-inch dual voice coil subwoofer with a 4 in (99.8 mm) coil and a triple-stacked ferrite magnet. DS18 rates it at 2,500 W RMS and prints a 5,000 W figure beside it, which it labels maximum power. The India MRP is ₹84,990, more than the EXL-TR12.4D and less than the HOOL-X12.4DHE, the two DS18 subs we compare it with below. It suits a buyer who already has the boot space and the electrics for a very high-power build. You can see it on our EXL-TR15.4D product page.

DS18 EXL-TR15.4D 15-inch triple-stacked dual voice coil car subwoofer

Quick summary

  • Size the amplifier by 2,500 W RMS. The 5,000 W figure is DS18's maximum power, exactly double.

  • Two 4 Ω coils give 2 Ω in parallel or 8 Ω in series. At 2 Ω, our listings rate DS18's SMD-5000.1D at 3,500 W and its FRP-8K/TI at 5,000 W.

  • DS18 prints a 35.4 L sealed box and a 70.8 L ported box tuned to 30 Hz, and lists 20 mm of one-way Xmax.

  • DS18's page shows no reviews of this model. The one related review we read covers the 12-inch EXL-TR12.4D.

2,500 W RMS or 5,000 W: which figure to use

DS18's key features give 5000 Watts Max beside 2500 Watts RMS, and its spec table labels the larger number MAX Power Handling. Treat 5,000 W as a ceiling and 2,500 W as the figure to size an amplifier by.

DS18's description is promotional. It says the sub suits a car audio competitor, a custom car builder or a bass enthusiast, but it prints no SPL figure and no competition result, so we make no competition claim of our own.

At this power the terms matter. DS18's published warranty terms exclude overpowering a subwoofer, running an amplifier below a 1 Ω load and clipping from improper tuning. They do not state India terms, so confirm those with us.

DS18's published box figures

DS18 prints a sealed box of 35.4 L (1.25 cu ft) with an F3 of 45 Hz. Its ported box is 70.8 L (2.5 cu ft), tuned to 30 Hz with an F3 of 26.5 Hz and a slot port of 62.7 x 381 x 939.8 mm (width, height and length). DS18 lists the sub's displacement as 3.1 L. A port nearly a metre long takes planning, so measure the boot before you choose between sealed and ported.

VA3 Car Studio builds custom subwoofer boxes, and we can work from DS18's volumes or from your own.

Wiring and amplifier pairing

One sub wired in parallel presents 2 Ω, and wired in series 8 Ω. At 2 Ω, three amplifiers in our store are rated as follows. The two DS18 figures come from our store listings, and the SMD-5000.1D is quoted at 14.4 V.

Zapco's ST-2000XM III is below the sub's RMS rating at 2 Ω. DS18's SMD-5000.1D is also rated 2,000 W at 4 Ω and 5,000 W at 1 Ω, and the FRP-8K/TI 2,500 W at 4 Ω and 8,000 W at 1 Ω. Our listings give both 0 gauge power connections, with recommended fuses of 520 A (not included) and 750 A. Our guide to amplifiers in car sound systems covers the basics.

What owners and reviewers say about the DS18 EXL-TR15.4D

When we checked in October 2026, DS18's own page for the EXL-TR15.4D showed no reviews of this model. We did not reach an independent test, retailer page or forum thread for it either, so we have no owner consensus to report.

The nearest feedback we could read is one review on DS18's page for the 12-inch EXL-TR12.4D. It covers that model, not this one: the reviewer says it is loud for its price and especially good for low bass. It is one review on the maker's own store, so we do not carry it over to the 15-inch. If you own an EXL-TR15.4D, we would like to hear how you have it set up.

EXL-TR15.4D against the EXL-TR12.4D and HOOL-X12.4DHE

The DS18 EXL-TR12.4D is the 12-inch step down, and the DS18 HOOL-X12.4DHE is a 12-inch with a higher rating.

Against the EXL-TR12.4D, the 15-inch adds 1,000 W to the RMS rating and needs a 355 mm cutout in place of 282 mm.

Who should buy it, and who shouldn't

Buy the EXL-TR15.4D if you have room for a 15-inch box, can feed it an amplifier near 2,500 W RMS at the load you wire, and have the cable, fuse and charging system to match.

Look elsewhere if you want independent reviews, a published weight, or a smaller enclosure than 35.4 L sealed. On DS18's figures the 12-inch EXL-TR12.4D takes a 17 L sealed box.

Installation notes for Indian cars

A 15-inch sub is a boot-space decision before it is an audio one. The driver needs a 355 mm cutout and 234 mm of mounting depth, and DS18 gives internal volumes, so the finished box is bigger than 35.4 L or 70.8 L. Measure the space before you order.

Plan the electrics first. Amplifier ratings are quoted at a stated supply voltage, and the voltage in a car idling in traffic with the AC on can be lower. For the cable, our store lists DS18's AMPKIT0, a 0 AWG kit with CCA conductors, and the OFCKIT0, a 0 AWG kit in pure copper; ask us what each contains.

A big sub at high output will find any loose panel, so see our sound-damping guide. VA3 Car Studio in Ghaziabad offers professional installation.

Price and where to buy

The DS18 EXL-TR15.4D has an India MRP of ₹84,990. VA3 Car Studio often sells below MRP, so check the current offer on the EXL-TR15.4D listing, which describes it as a genuine DS18 product.

DS18 EXL-TR15.4D - another view

The bottom line

The EXL-TR15.4D is a 15-inch, 2,500 W RMS dual-coil sub whose 5,000 W figure is a maximum. DS18 publishes sealed and ported box figures and a recone kit, but no weight, and we found no reviews of this model. Match the amplifier to the RMS rating, plan the cable and fuse, and measure the boot before you order.

DS18 EXL-TR15.4D FAQ

Is the DS18 EXL-TR15.4D a 5,000 W subwoofer?

No. DS18 rates it at 2,500 W RMS and lists 5,000 W as maximum power. Choose the amplifier from the RMS figure at the load you wire, because DS18's published terms exclude overpowering.

Are there reviews of the DS18 EXL-TR15.4D?

We found none for this model on DS18's page when we checked in October 2026, and no independent test. The one related review we read covers the 12-inch EXL-TR12.4D, not this subwoofer.

Which amplifier suits the EXL-TR15.4D?

For one sub at 2 Ω, look for about 2,500 W RMS at that load. Our listings rate DS18's SMD-5000.1D at 3,500 W and its FRP-8K/TI at 5,000 W at 2 Ω, while Zapco's ST-2000XM III, at 1,450 W, is below the sub's rating.
