DS18 HOOL-X12.4DHE Review: 12-Inch High-Excursion Sub, 4,000 W RMS and 6,000 W Max

6 min read

The DS18 HOOL-X12.4DHE is a 12-inch high-excursion dual voice coil subwoofer from DS18's Hooligan X line, with a 4 in (99.8 mm) coil and a 500 oz ferrite magnet. DS18 rates it at 4,000 W RMS and prints a separate 6,000 W maximum power figure. The India MRP is ₹1,79,990, the highest of the three DS18 subs we compare it with below. It suits a buyer who has planned the electrics first and has room for a heavy driver: DS18 lists 87.5 lb, about 39.7 kg, and gives the same number for its master carton, so the bare driver may weigh a little less. You can see it on our HOOL-X12.4DHE product page.

DS18 HOOL-X12.4DHE 12-inch Hooligan X high-excursion dual voice coil subwoofer

Quick summary

  • Size the amplifier by 4,000 W RMS. DS18 labels the 6,000 W figure maximum power, and here it is not double the RMS rating.

  • Two 4 Ω coils give 2 Ω in parallel or 8 Ω in series. For one sub at 2 Ω, our listings rate DS18's SMD-5000.1D at 3,500 W and its FRP-8K/TI at 5,000 W.

  • DS18 prints the same 17 L sealed and 42.5 L ported box figures for this sub as for the EXL-TR12.4D.

  • DS18 calls it high-excursion but lists no Xmax. DS18's own store page carries one review of this model.

Figures come from DS18's HOOL-X12.4DHE page. Our listing mentions a 25 Hz – 35 Hz tuning range for ported boxes, but the page prints one value, 30 Hz, which we use.

4,000 W RMS or 6,000 W: which figure to use

DS18's page gives 4000W RMS and 6000W MAX, and its spec table labels the larger number MAX Power Handling. Treat 6,000 W as a ceiling and 4,000 W as the figure to size an amplifier by. On the EXL-TR12.4D and EXL-TR15.4D, DS18's maximum is exactly double the RMS rating. Here it is not, so do not apply a double-the-RMS rule.

DS18's copy is promotional. It calls the sub perfect for heavy-hitting competition bass and the top choice for enthusiasts and competitors. It prints no SPL figure and no competition result, so those are DS18's claims, not ours.

DS18's published warranty terms exclude overpowering a subwoofer and running an amplifier below a 1 Ω load. India terms are not stated, so confirm them with us.

DS18's printed box figures, and a caution

DS18 prints a sealed box of 17 L (0.6 cu ft) with a 41 Hz output response, and a ported box of 42.5 L (1.5 cu ft) tuned to 30 Hz with a 25 Hz output response and a slot port of 38.5 x 312 x 808.2 mm (width, height and length). These are the same figures DS18 prints for the EXL-TR12.4D, and the page does not say which box design applies to this model.

The drivers differ: the HOOL-X12.4DHE has an Fs of 26 Hz and a Vas of 21.86 L, against 45 Hz and 12.36 L for the EXL-TR12.4D. Treat the printed numbers as a starting point and ask us before you build. VA3 Car Studio builds custom subwoofer boxes, and we can work from DS18's volumes or from your own.

Wiring and amplifier pairing

One sub wired in parallel presents 2 Ω, and wired in series 8 Ω. Two subs, each wired to 2 Ω and joined in parallel, present 1 Ω. Our listings rate DS18's SMD-5000.1D and FRP-8K/TI monoblocks as follows, with the SMD-5000.1D quoted at 14.4 V.

What owners and reviewers say about the DS18 HOOL-X12.4DHE

When we checked in October 2026, DS18's page for the HOOL-X12.4DHE carried one review, in the top rating tier. It sits on the maker's own store, so it is a small sample and not independent. The reviewer installed two in a truck with a ported set-up, is happy with the sound and recommends them for loud listening. The same reviewer says the soldering on the voice coils broke, which cost money on the install, and advises verifying connections.

DS18's page for the 2-ohm HOOL-X12.2DHE shows three reviews, all in the top tier, but they cover that model, not this one. One calls it extremely loud and extremely heavy, one praises the low end in a ported box tuned to 28 Hz, and one says the electrical system has to be up to the load because the sub is power hungry.

HOOL-X12.4DHE against the EXL-TR12.4D and EXL-TR15.4D

The DS18 EXL-TR12.4D and DS18 EXL-TR15.4D are the two lower-rated subs in this comparison.

The 12-inch HOOL needs 255 mm of mounting depth, more than the 15-inch EXL-TR15.4D's 234 mm. For a lower rating, the DS18 ZR12 is a 12-inch at 750 W RMS.

Who should buy it, and who shouldn't

Buy the HOOL-X12.4DHE if you want a 12-inch driver rated 4,000 W RMS, can feed it an amplifier of that class at the load you wire, and have a box and mounting that can carry the roughly 39.7 kg DS18 lists.

Look elsewhere if you want a published Xmax figure or independent reviews, or have an amplifier nearer 1,500 W, the EXL-TR12.4D's RMS rating.

Installation notes for Indian cars

DS18 lists 87.5 lb, a 285 mm cutout and 255 mm of mounting depth, so the baffle has to be solid and the boot measured before you order. One reviewer on DS18's page says the soldering on the voice coils broke, so verify your connections. VA3 Car Studio in Ghaziabad offers professional installation.

Plan the electrics first. Amplifier ratings are quoted at a stated supply voltage, and a car idling in traffic with the AC on can run below it. Our store lists DS18's AMPKIT0 (CCA) and OFCKIT0 (pure copper) 0 AWG kits; ask us what each contains. Our sound-damping guide covers panel rattle.

Price and where to buy

The DS18 HOOL-X12.4DHE has an India MRP of ₹1,79,990. VA3 Car Studio often sells below MRP, so check the current offer on the HOOL-X12.4DHE listing, which describes it as a genuine DS18 product.

DS18 HOOL-X12.4DHE - another view

The bottom line

The HOOL-X12.4DHE is a 12-inch, 4,000 W RMS dual-coil sub whose 6,000 W figure is a maximum. DS18 lists its weight but no Xmax, and prints box figures that match another sub's. Size the amplifier by the RMS rating, plan the electrics first, and confirm the box with us before you build.

DS18 HOOL-X12.4DHE FAQ

Is the DS18 HOOL-X12.4DHE a 6,000 W subwoofer?

No. DS18 rates it at 4,000 W RMS and lists 6,000 W as maximum power. Choose the amplifier from the RMS figure at the load you wire, because DS18's published terms exclude overpowering.

Which amplifier suits the HOOL-X12.4DHE?

For one sub at 2 Ω, look for about 4,000 W RMS at that load. Our listings rate DS18's SMD-5000.1D at 3,500 W there, below the sub's rating, and the FRP-8K/TI at 5,000 W, above it.

What box does DS18 print for the HOOL-X12.4DHE?

DS18 prints 17 L sealed and 42.5 L ported, tuned to 30 Hz, the same figures it prints for the EXL-TR12.4D, and does not say which design applies. Ask us before building a box.
