DS18 EXL-TR12.4D Review: 12-Inch Dual-Stacked Sub, 1,500 W RMS and 3,000 W Max
The DS18 EXL-TR12.4D is a 12-inch dual voice coil subwoofer with a 3 in (76.5 mm) coil and a dual-stacked ferrite magnet. DS18 rates it at 1,500 W RMS and prints a separate 3,000 W maximum figure beside it; only the RMS number is a continuous rating. The India MRP is ₹59,990. Unlike the GEN-X and ZR models in this series of reviews, DS18 also publishes sealed and ported box figures for it. It is listed on our EXL-TR12.4D product page.

Quick summary
Size the amplifier by 1,500 W RMS. The 3,000 W figure is DS18's maximum power, exactly double, and is not a continuous rating.
Two 4 Ω coils: 2 Ω in parallel, 8 Ω in series. For one sub at 2 Ω, Zapco's ST-2000XM III, rated 1,450 W, is the closest of the four amplifiers compared below.
DS18 prints a 17 L sealed box and a 42.5 L ported box tuned to 30 Hz, and lists 17.5 mm of one-way Xmax.

Figures come from DS18's EXL-TR12.4D page and match our listing. One caution: the browser title tag on that page says Triple Stack and a 4 in coil, which contradicts its heading, key features and spec table (dual stack, 3 in). We use the spec table. The page is the maker's own marketing and data.
1,500 W RMS or 3,000 W: which figure to use
DS18's opening line on the page gives 3000W MAX and 1500W RMS, and the spec table repeats both. Treat 3,000 W as a ceiling and 1,500 W as the figure to size an amplifier by. DS18's description makes no competition or SPL claim for this sub. It calls it a high-excursion subwoofer for car audio and custom installations, and says the aluminium former and SV winding help dissipate heat for extended high-output use.
At this power the terms matter. DS18's published warranty terms exclude overpowering a subwoofer, running an amplifier below a 1 Ω load and clipping from improper tuning.
DS18's published box figures
DS18 prints a sealed internal volume of 17 L (0.6 cu ft) with a 41 Hz output response. For a ported box it prints 42.5 L (1.5 cu ft), tuned to 30 Hz, with a 25 Hz output response and a slot port of 38.5 x 312 x 808.2 mm. It does not label the two response figures as F3. DS18 also lists the sub's displacement as 3.2 L, which a box builder will account for. VA3 Car Studio builds custom subwoofer boxes, and we can work from these figures or from your own.
Wiring and amplifier pairing
One sub wired in parallel presents 2 Ω, and in series 8 Ω. At 2 Ω, four amplifiers we have covered are rated as follows, with JL's figures at 14.4 V and 12.5 V.
Amplifier | Rated output at 2 Ω | Against 1,500 W RMS |
|---|---|---|
DS18 G3600.1D | 900 W | Below |
JL JD1000/1 | 1,000 W / 800 W | Below |
Zapco ST-2000XM III | 1,450 W | Just below |
DS18 SMD-5000.1D | 3,500 W | More than double |
The closest match of the four is Zapco's ST-2000XM III. JL's JD1000/1 and DS18's G3600.1D (from our listing) fall short of 1,500 W. DS18's SMD-5000.1D is rated 2,000 W at 4 Ω and 5,000 W at 1 Ω as well, so it suits several subs rather than one. Our listing gives it a 0 AWG power input and a recommended 520 A fuse, not included. JL's ratings drop between 14.4 V and 12.5 V, so the supply matters as much as the amplifier.
What owners and reviewers say about the DS18 EXL-TR12.4D
When we checked in October 2026, the only owner feedback we could read was on DS18's own web store. We did not reach an independent test or forum thread, so treat this as one data point.
DS18's page for the EXL-TR12.4D shows one review, in the top rating tier, posted about a week before we read it. The reviewer says the subwoofer is loud for its price and especially good for low bass. It names no amplifier, box or car, so it tells you little about set-up.
EXL-TR12.4D against the EXL-TR15.4D and HOOL-X12.4DHE
The DS18 EXL-TR15.4D steps up to 15 inches and the DS18 HOOL-X12.4DHE stays at 12 inches with a far higher rating.

India MRP | ₹59,990 | ₹84,990 | ₹1,79,990 |
For a lower rating, the DS18 ZR12 is a 12-inch at 750 W RMS and ₹26,990 MRP.
Who should buy it, and who shouldn't
Buy the EXL-TR12.4D if you want a 12-inch sub with 17.5 mm of listed Xmax, can power it from an amplifier near 1,500 W RMS at the load you wire, and have an electrical system that can feed that amplifier.
Look elsewhere if you want independent reviews, a published weight, or a lower rating and price. The ZR12 is rated 750 W RMS and the GEN-X124D 450 W RMS.
Installation notes for Indian cars
Plan the electrics first. A 1,500 W RMS system needs heavy power cable and a fuse sized to the amplifier, and our store lists two DS18 0 AWG kits, the AMPKIT0 with CCA conductors and the OFCKIT0 in pure copper; ask us what each kit contains. The ported option needs space for a port 808.2 mm long, so measure the boot before you choose between sealed and ported.
Our sound-damping guide covers rattles. VA3 Car Studio in Ghaziabad offers professional installation.
Price and where to buy
The DS18 EXL-TR12.4D has an India MRP of ₹59,990. VA3 Car Studio often sells below MRP, so check the current offer on the EXL-TR12.4D listing, which describes it as a genuine DS18 product.

The bottom line
The EXL-TR12.4D is a 12-inch, 1,500 W RMS dual-coil sub whose 3,000 W figure is a maximum. DS18 publishes sealed and ported box figures, but no weight, and the one review we found is a single data point. Match the amplifier to the RMS line and plan the power supply before the box.
DS18 EXL-TR12.4D FAQ
Is the DS18 EXL-TR12.4D a 3,000 W subwoofer?
No. DS18 rates it at 1,500 W RMS and lists 3,000 W as maximum power. Choose the amplifier from the RMS figure at the load you wire, because DS18's terms exclude overpowering.
Which amplifier suits the EXL-TR12.4D?
For one sub at 2 Ω, look for about 1,500 W RMS at that load. Zapco's ST-2000XM III is rated 1,450 W, while DS18's SMD-5000.1D is rated 3,500 W at 2 Ω, more than double the sub's rating.
What box does DS18 publish for the EXL-TR12.4D?
DS18 prints 17 L sealed and 42.5 L ported, tuned to 30 Hz, with a port of 38.5 x 312 x 808.2 mm. Ask us about a custom box built to those figures or to your own volume.
