DS18 SXE-1200.4/RD Review: Reading 4 x 60 W RMS Against a 1,200 W Peak
The DS18 SXE-1200.4/RD is a four-channel Class AB amplifier in a red finish. DS18 prints two kinds of power figure for it: a 1,200 W peak number, and RMS ratings of 4 x 60 W at 4 Ω, 4 x 100 W at 2 Ω and 2 x 200 W bridged at 4 Ω. Only the RMS lines describe continuous output. Its India MRP is ₹14,990, the lowest of the three DS18 four-channel amplifiers compared below, and it suits a front or front-and-rear speaker set where each speaker is rated near 60 W RMS. You can see it on our DS18 SXE-1200.4/RD product page.

Quick summary
RMS is 4 x 60 W at 4 Ω, 4 x 100 W at 2 Ω and 2 x 200 W bridged at 4 Ω. The 1,200 W figure is a peak rating, five times the 240 W total RMS at 4 Ω.
Class AB, with a selectable HPF / full / LPF crossover and low-level inputs of 200 mV to 5 V. DS18 does not list a high-level input.
Fan-cooled and 249.3 x 140 x 48 mm, with efficiency listed at 64% at 4 Ω, so plan for airflow.
DS18's own shop shows one review of this red version and fifteen for the black one; we have read no independent reviews.

Figures come from DS18's SXE-1200.4/RD page and its SXE manual, which covers four models. The ratings match our listing; the weight and crossover slope appear only in DS18's material.
Peak against RMS: what the numbers mean
Four channels at 60 W is 240 W in total at 4 Ω, 400 W at 2 Ω, and 400 W bridged into two 200 W outputs. The 1,200 W peak figure is five times the 4 Ω total, and DS18 gives it no load or supply voltage, so treat it as a headline rather than a rating to design around.
If your speakers are rated 4 Ω, the 4 x 60 W line is the one to set against each speaker's RMS rating. The bridged line needs a 4 Ω or higher load, and none of these ratings comes with a stated supply voltage.
Class AB heat, the fan and where to mount it
DS18 lists 64% efficiency at 4 Ω for this amplifier, against 92% for the Class D G1000.4D and 97% for the FRP-1.2K4/TI, so a larger share of the power the SXE draws ends up as heat. It has a cooling fan and thermal protection at 80 °C.
The manual asks you to avoid mounting it with the fins facing down and to choose a well-ventilated location, naming the hatch or boot as typical for cars and SUVs. Keep luggage and thick carpet clear of it.
Inputs, crossover and wiring
DS18 does not list a high-level (speaker-level) input; the high-level row in its manual's SXE-1200.4 column has a label but no value. A factory radio without RCA outputs would need a line-output converter, such as the JL Audio LoC22, which has its own review post on our blog, or a DSP with speaker-level inputs; our guide to why a car may need a DSP covers the second route.
DS18's manual puts the crossover slope at 12 dB per octave but does not say whether it applies to all four channels or to each pair, so confirm that on the unit before planning a high-passed front and a full-range rear.
The manual text gives no power-cable gauge, battery-side fuse rating or ground instructions, and its wiring diagrams are images. The 4 GA figure in the table is the terminal size, so ask your installer to size the cable and fuse. We list DS18's AMPKIT4 (4 GA, copper-clad aluminium) and OFCKIT4 (4 GA, pure copper) installation kits.
What owners and reviewers say about the DS18 SXE-1200.4/RD
When we checked in October 2026, the only owner feedback we read was on DS18's own web shop; we have not read independent tests or forum threads. The shop's page for this red SXE-1200.4/RD shows one undated review. The reviewer describes good performance for the price and says it paired well with DS18 PRO 6.5-inch and 6x9-inch speakers.
DS18's page for the black SXE-1200.4/BK covers the same amplifier in another finish, with the same ratings, and counts fifteen reviews, though only five display. Those five describe strong power, a compact body that does not drain the battery and, in one case, the best amplifier the owner has had. Their only reservation is fan noise: one reviewer, who runs it on 3.5-inch midrange speakers, says it only gets warm to the touch but adds that the fan is noticeable with the windows up. The rating bars are not all at one level, so the ten we could not read may be less glowing. DS18 runs the shop and states no moderation policy, so treat it as a favourable sample.
SXE-1200.4/RD against the G1000.4D and FRP-1.2K4/TI
The DS18 G1000.4D (₹22,990 MRP, ₹8,000 more) is Class D and rated 4 x 90 W at 4 Ω, 30 W more per channel than the SXE. It is 205 mm long against 249.3 mm, lists no cooling fan, and its listing includes a high-level input, which DS18 does not list for the SXE.
The DS18 FRP-1.2K4/TI (₹49,990 MRP, ₹35,000 more) is rated 4 x 120 W at 4 Ω, twice the SXE's per-channel figure, and has a 1 Ω stereo minimum against the SXE's 2 Ω. It is 183 mm long, and DS18's page says it has no high-level input.
Who should buy it, and who shouldn't
Buy the SXE-1200.4/RD if your speakers are rated near 60 W RMS, your source has RCA outputs, you want the lowest MRP of the three amplifiers above, and you have room for a 249.3 mm amplifier with airflow. If you are still deciding whether you need an amplifier, our guide to the need for an amplifier is a good start.
Look elsewhere if you need a high-level input (the G1000.4D lists one), you want a smaller Class D with higher listed efficiency, or you expect anything like 1,200 W of continuous output.
Installation notes for Indian cars
Measure the 48 mm height, the 249.3 mm length and the room for airflow before you settle on a spot. VA3 Car Studio in Ghaziabad offers professional installation and can make door baffles or speaker pods for the speakers it drives. DS18's manual says self-installation may affect the warranty; the warranty is per DS18's published terms, so confirm India terms with us.
Price and where to buy
The DS18 SXE-1200.4/RD has an India MRP of ₹14,990. VA3 Car Studio often sells below MRP, so check the current offer on the SXE-1200.4/RD listing, which describes it as a genuine DS18 product.

The bottom line
The SXE-1200.4/RD is a 4 x 60 W RMS Class AB amplifier with a 1,200 W peak figure in its name. Buy it for the 240 W it is rated to deliver at 4 Ω, not the peak number, give it airflow, and look at the G1000.4D if your radio has no RCA outputs.
DS18 SXE-1200.4/RD FAQ
Is the DS18 SXE-1200.4/RD really a 1,200 W amplifier?
No. DS18 prints 1,200 W as a peak figure with no load or voltage. The RMS ratings are 4 x 60 W at 4 Ω, 4 x 100 W at 2 Ω and 2 x 200 W bridged at 4 Ω, which is 240 W in total at 4 Ω.
Does the SXE-1200.4/RD have a high-level input for a factory radio?
DS18 does not list one; its page and manual give low-level inputs of 200 mV to 5 V. A radio with no RCA outputs would need a line-output converter or a DSP with speaker-level inputs; the G1000.4D lists a high-level input.
Can the SXE-1200.4/RD be bridged?
Yes. DS18 lists 2 x 200 W RMS bridged at 4 Ω, with 4 Ω as the bridged minimum. The manual text does not name the bridging terminals, so check the markings on the unit.
