Audison APX 690 Review: 6x9 Three-Way Coaxial With a Horn Tweeter

7 min read

The Audison APX 690 is a 6 x 9 in three-way coaxial speaker from Audison's Prima range. A 40 mm horn-loaded dome tweeter and a 15 mm supertweeter sit in front of a paper-cone woofer, and Audison rates the speaker at 100 W continuous and 300 W peak into 4 ohm. The Indian MRP is ₹19,990, which is ₹10,000 above the 5-inch Prima APX 5 and ₹10,000 below the Prima APK 690 component set. It suits buyers with a 6 x 9 opening who want a one-piece upgrade that adds a supertweeter. You can see the pair on our Audison APX 690 product page.

Audison APX 690 Prima 6x9 three-way coaxial car speakers

Key takeaways

  • Three drivers on one frame: a 40 mm horn-loaded dome tweeter with an acoustic lens, a 15 mm supertweeter and a 6 x 9 woofer. Grilles are included.

  • Audison rates it at 100 W continuous and 300 W peak. Choose the amplifier by the continuous figure, not the peak.

  • Audison publishes no crossover details, no cutout and no recommended amplifier, so measure the opening and ask us before you order.

  • Owner evidence is thin: we found one short retailer review, and nothing from an Indian owner.

Figures come from Audison's APX 690 page, its datasheet and our listing. Audison's dimension table has an 81 mm (3.19 in) entry but does not say which letter is the depth or the cutout. Our listing and Elettromedia's own store page both give 81 as the mounting depth, though Elettromedia does not state the unit. No cutout diameter is published.

Horn tweeter, lens and supertweeter: what Audison puts in front

Most coaxials hang one small tweeter over the woofer. Audison says the APX 690 does more. The 40 mm dome sits in a horn load that raises efficiency, with a quoted sensitivity of up to 96 dB, and an acoustic lens widens high-frequency dispersion. A 15 mm polyethylene-injected (PEI) supertweeter then covers the very top of the range, which Audison says weakens when a speaker is heard off-axis, and it gives rear-deck mounting as the example.

That description makes sense for a car. A 6 x 9 on a rear shelf fires at the roof glass and you hear it from the side. We have not measured the effect, so treat it as Audison's description and not a result. The 96 dB figure also comes without test conditions, so it is a maker's number, not a promise.

Behind the tweeters sits a paper cone with a water-repellent treatment and a profile Audison developed with FEM simulation, a TPU surround with a shallow Triple Wave profile and a polycotton spider. Water-repellent treatment is a sensible trait for a door that collects damp in the monsoon, though it does not replace a proper door membrane.

Fitting a 6 x 9 and powering it

Where a car has an oval 6 x 9 opening, it is often a rear shelf or a door cut for that shape. We do not claim fitment for any car model, so check your own opening. Our listing gives an 81 mm mounting depth, and the US retailers ABT and Sound of Tristate show the same depth as 3.19 in. None of the pages we read gives a cutout diameter.

A head unit's built-in amplifier is small beside a 100 W continuous rating, so the head unit will run out of clean power long before the speaker does. An external four-channel amplifier that delivers something near the 100 W continuous rating on each channel at 4 ohm uses it in full, and a smaller one will still sound cleaner than a head unit alone. Size it by the continuous figure; 300 W is a short-burst peak. Set the gains with a test tone and high-pass the speakers above the 60 Hz resonance, leaving the lowest octaves to a subwoofer. Audison names no recommended amplifier for this model.

What owners and reviewers say about the Audison APX 690

Owner feedback on the APX 690 is thin, and we would rather say so than pad it. This is what we found when we checked in October 2026.

The OnlineCarStereo page carries one customer review, dated 3/19/2024, with no star rating shown. The reviewer says the bass is good for a 6 x 9 and the sound is well defined, credits the three-way design, and says the speakers are much better than the ones they had before. The review does not say what car they went into or who fitted them.

The pages we checked at ABT, Safe and Sound HQ and Sound of Tristate showed no reviews, and Elettromedia's own store page showed none either. Audison's pages are promotional, so we use them for specifications and feature descriptions only. We found no report from an Indian owner. If you have fitted a pair, we would like to hear how it sounds and where it went.

Audison APX 690 vs APK 690, Hertz and JL 6 x 9 coaxials

The Audison APK 690 (₹29,990 MRP) has the same 100 W continuous and 300 W peak ratings but splits the job: a separate 26 mm tweeter and an outboard crossover with a 3.3 kHz high-pass and a 0 / +3 dB tweeter level switch. The component set lets you place the tweeter away from the woofer, while the APX 690 keeps everything on one frame and is the simpler fit. The price gap is ₹10,000. The smaller Audison APX 5 is a 5-inch two-way coaxial at ₹9,990 MRP.

Audison's sister brand Hertz, which like Audison belongs to Elettromedia, lists two 6 x 9 coaxials we have covered. The Hertz DCX 690.3 is a three-way at ₹10,990 MRP, rated 90 W continuous and 180 W peak. The Hertz X 690 is a four-way at ₹8,990 MRP, rated 85 W continuous and 340 W peak. The APX 690 costs ₹9,000 and ₹11,000 more. Its continuous rating is a little higher, but the X 690's peak rating is higher than the APX 690's, so peak figures alone will not rank them. Audison's 96 dB and Hertz's 93 and 94 dB come from different datasheets, and Audison states no test conditions, so do not read them as a measured gap.

From JL Audio, the JL Audio C1-690x shares the ₹19,990 MRP and is a coaxial with a 25 mm aluminium-dome tweeter, while the three-way JL Audio C2-690tx is ₹33,990 MRP. JL states power as RMS and sensitivity at 1 W / 1 m, so those figures do not line up with Audison's continuous and peak pair. Compare price, layout and what fits your opening.

Who should buy the Audison APX 690, and who shouldn't

Buy it if you have a 6 x 9 opening, want a single-piece upgrade with a three-way layout, and plan to power it from an amplifier with some headroom. Audison gives a rear-deck install as its example for the supertweeter, so a shelf position is the case that driver addresses.

Look elsewhere if you want to place the tweeter on its own, which is what the APK 690 is for, or if the budget is tight, since the two Hertz 6 x 9 coaxials above list for less. Skip it too if you need a published cutout, crossover details or a long record of owner reports before you buy.

Installation notes for Indian cars

Measure the opening and the clearance behind it, including window glass travel if the speaker goes in a door. Audison lists high-current fast-on terminals with a temperature-resistant cover, so check that your harness adapters fit. Where the opening is not a straight swap, VA3 Car Studio in Ghaziabad builds speaker pods and door baffles, and it offers professional installation.

Treat the door or shelf with damping material, because a thin resonant panel steals the bass a 6 x 9 woofer can deliver. Our guide to applying sound damping in a car shows how. Keep the wiring away from heat, and seal the speaker to its baffle so the rear wave stays behind it.

Audison APX 690 - another view

The bottom line

The Audison APX 690 is a three-way 6 x 9 coaxial with a horn-loaded tweeter and a supertweeter, rated 100 W continuous and 300 W peak. Its case rests on the hardware Audison documents and not on a body of owner reports, because we found only one. If you have the opening and want a one-piece upgrade, it is worth a look. If you want a separately placed tweeter or the lowest price, compare the APK 690 and the Hertz coaxials first.

Audison APX 690 FAQ

Is the Audison APX 690 a two-way or three-way speaker?

It is a three-way coaxial. Audison's datasheet describes a woofer, a 40 mm tweeter and a 15 mm supertweeter. Some retailer pages, and the web address of our own listing, still say 2-way, but the title and specifications say three-way.

How much power does the Audison APX 690 need?

Audison rates it at 100 W continuous and 300 W peak at 4 ohm. Choose an amplifier by the continuous figure and set the gains with a test tone. Audison names no recommended amplifier for this model.

Does the Audison APX 690 come with grilles?

Yes. Audison's datasheet marks the grille as included and our listing lists the grilles as included, so you should not need to buy them separately.

Will the Audison APX 690 fit my car?

Our listing gives an 81 mm mounting depth, but Audison publishes no cutout diameter, so we cannot promise fitment. Measure the opening and the space behind it, or ask us to check before you order.
