Recoil SXS12D2 Review: 400 W RMS Ultra-Shallow 12-Inch Sub, Wiring and Open Box Questions

5 min read

The Recoil SXS12D2 is a 12-inch dual 2-ohm subwoofer from Recoil's Echo Max range, rated at 400 W RMS and 800 W peak and sold as ultra-shallow, with a listed mounting depth of 91 mm. Its Indian MRP is ₹20,000. Recoil publishes no cut-out, no Thiele/Small figures and no box volume for it, so this review sticks to what is known: the ratings, the wiring choices a dual 2-ohm coil gives you, and how its depth and price compare with other shallow 12s we cover. You can see it on our Recoil SXS12D2 product page.

Recoil SXS12D2 Echo Max ultra-shallow 12-inch dual 2-ohm subwoofer

Quick summary

  • The 800 W in the product name is the peak figure. Plan around 400 W RMS.

  • The 91 mm mounting depth is the greatest in the comparison below, so ultra-shallow is Recoil's label rather than the shallowest figure on paper.

  • No cut-out, Thiele/Small figures, Xmax or box volume is published.

  • No owner reviews or independent tests turned up in October 2026.

Power, coil, cone, surround and frame agree across Recoil's own SXS12D2 page, Recoil Audio USA's page and our listing. The 91 mm depth appears on Recoil's own page and in our listing, and Recoil Audio USA's page gives no depth.

The 800W in the name and the 400W that counts

The headline on Recoil's page quotes 800 Watts Power with no label. The labelled figures beneath it are 800 W peak and 400 W RMS, and Recoil Audio USA gives the same pair. A peak figure describes a short burst, so size the amplifier against 400 W RMS. Recoil's warranty terms, written for the US, say blown or burned voice coils are not manufacturing defects.

Wiring a dual 2-ohm driver

The two 2-ohm coils present 1 ohm in parallel or 4 ohm in series. Parallel needs an amplifier that is stable at 1 ohm and draws more current. Series is gentler, but only amplifiers with a high 4-ohm rating can deliver 400 W into it.

At 4 ohm, the Onkyo V-T1000.1D (₹19,990 MRP) lists 400 W RMS, the same as the sub, in a 367 x 217 x 55 mm case. The Deaf Bonce Machete MLA-1000 (₹25,990 MRP) also lists 400 W RMS at 4 ohm at 14.4 V in a 350 x 216 x 50 mm case, and its manual says it may heat up to 80 °C in use. At 1 ohm, the Zapco ST-500XM III (₹34,990 MRP) lists 400 W, with Zapco giving watts and no RMS label, in a smaller 225 x 160 x 58 mm case. In a shallow install, where space is the whole point, that size difference matters.

The Hertz MPS 300 lists a 16.8 mm Xmax and the JL Audio 12TW3-D4 lists 15.2 mm, while Recoil lists none. The Morel Ultimo PS 124D is the dearest in the table. The Alpine RS-W12D4 lists 81.7 mm at ₹95,999. The Recoil has the lowest MRP and the greatest depth.

Where the litres go in a shallow box

All three rivals publish the same sealed volume, 22.7 litres (0.8 cu ft), and Recoil publishes none. Hertz shows two sealed-box versions for the MPS 300 S2, measuring 510 x 406 x 160 mm and 770 x 406 x 115 mm. These belong to a different driver, so read them as geometry and not as a Recoil recommendation: a shallow driver can mean a wide, flat box rather than a small one. What owners and reviewers say about the Recoil SXS12D2

We found no owner reviews or independent tests when we looked in October 2026. Recoil's own page shows Reviews (0), and Recoil Audio USA's page shows no reviews or rating. DIYMobileAudio and Sonic Electronix search pages returned errors, Amazon blocks automated access and a CarAudioForum search came back empty. If you run an SXS12D2, leave a comment with your box volume and amplifier.

Who should buy the SXS12D2, and who shouldn't

Buy it if you need a 12-inch driver where depth is limited, want a low MRP, and can accept that the cut-out and box volume are not published.

Look elsewhere if you want the shallowest 12 on paper, published Xmax and ready-made box advice. The rivals above offer those at more than twice the MRP. The 10-inch Recoil SXS10D2 lists an 80 mm depth for the same MRP.

Installation notes for Indian cars

Measure the free depth and width behind the mounting spot before choosing a box, and leave room for the amplifier too. Cut the baffle to the driver's measured hole, since no cut-out is published, and screw it down evenly on Recoil's gasket. Fuse the power cable near the battery, fix the box so speed breakers cannot shift it, and keep the amplifier clear of any place where water collects in the monsoon. VA3 Car Studio in Ghaziabad offers professional installation.

Price and where to buy

The SXS12D2 has an India MRP of ₹20,000. VA3 Car Studio often sells below MRP, so check today's price on the SXS12D2 product page. Recoil's warranty terms are written for the US and state no India terms, so confirm them with Recoil or its distributor before you order.

The bottom line

The SXS12D2 is the cheapest shallow 12 in our comparison and the deepest, with a firm 400 W RMS rating and little else published. It makes sense when budget and a depth limit meet, and when you are willing to measure the driver and settle the box volume yourself. There is no owner feedback yet to lean on.

Recoil SXS12D2 FAQ

Is the Recoil SXS12D2 400 W or 800 W?

It is rated 400 W RMS. The 800 W in the product name is the peak rating. Size the amplifier by the RMS figure at the load you wire: 4 ohm in series or 1 ohm in parallel.

Which amplifier suits the Recoil SXS12D2?

Look for about 400 W RMS at the load you choose. The Onkyo V-T1000.1D and Deaf Bonce MLA-1000 each list 400 W RMS at 4 ohm, for series wiring. For 1 ohm in parallel, the Zapco ST-500XM III lists 400 W.

How deep is the SXS12D2 and what box does it need?

Recoil's page and our listing give a 91 mm mounting depth. Recoil publishes no cut-out or box volume, so measure the driver and plan the enclosure before cutting anything.
