DS18 GEN-X124D Review: 12-Inch Dual-Coil Sub, 450 W RMS and 900 W Max
The DS18 GEN-X124D is a 12-inch (304.8 mm) dual voice coil subwoofer. DS18 rates it at 450 W RMS and prints a separate 900 W maximum figure beside it; only the RMS number describes continuous power. The India MRP is ₹19,990, which is ₹1,000 more than the 10-inch GEN-X104D. Wired in parallel its two 4 Ω coils present 2 Ω, so it wants a monoblock rated near 450 W RMS at that load. It is listed on our DS18 GEN-X124D product page.

Quick summary
Choose the amplifier by the 450 W RMS rating. DS18 labels 900 W as maximum power, and its page lists no peak or program figure.
Two 4 Ω voice coils: 2 Ω in parallel, 8 Ω in series.
87.5 dB sensitivity, 20–250 Hz listed response, a 277 mm cutout and a 146 mm mounting depth.

450 W RMS or 900 W: how DS18 labels this sub
DS18's web address and page title for this model lead with 900 W, while the product heading leads with 450 W RMS. The key-features list calls the larger figure MAX Power, and the page lists no peak or program figure. Maximum power is a ceiling, so an amplifier chosen for 900 W would be double what the sub is rated to take continuously. DS18's published warranty terms exclude overpowering a subwoofer, which is one more reason to start from the RMS line.
Our guide to working out what amplifier a system needs covers the matching logic in more detail.
Wiring and amplifier matching
With one GEN-X124D, parallel wiring gives 2 Ω and series wiring gives 8 Ω. The 2 Ω option suits the monoblocks named below, but check an amplifier's rated output at whichever load you choose. JL's JD500/1 is rated 500 W RMS at 2 Ω with a 14.4 V supply and 400 W at 12.5 V, which brackets this sub's 450 W rating.
Going bigger is riskier. JL's JD1000/1 is rated 1,000 W at 2 Ω at 14.4 V and 800 W at 12.5 V, well above this sub's rating, so it leaves no margin for a careless gain setting. Two GEN-X124D subs, each wired to 2 Ω and then paralleled, would present 1 Ω, so ask us before planning a pair.
Enclosure and fit
DS18 lists no recommended box volume for this model, only Thiele/Small data: Fs 43 Hz, Qts 0.69 and Vas 23.4 L. A Qts of 0.69 is on the higher side, which is usually taken to suit a sealed box, but with no volume from DS18 that is only a starting point for a box builder. DS18's general box chart is organised by driver size, not by model. It states that its volumes are net of vent and driver displacement and that needs change with the vehicle and speaker placement.
Measure the baffle against the 277 mm cutout, and the space behind it against the 146 mm mounting depth, before you commit. VA3 Car Studio builds custom subwoofer boxes, so the volume and the shape can follow your boot.
What owners and reviewers say about the DS18 GEN-X124D
When we checked in October 2026, the only owner feedback we could read was on DS18's own web store. We did not reach an independent test or forum thread for this model, so treat this as a very small sample.
DS18's page for the GEN-X124D shows one undated review in the top rating tier. The reviewer found it impressive for the price and says it sounds good when wired and tuned correctly. They ran one sub wired to a 2 Ω load on one channel of a two-channel amplifier that they describe as 800 W RMS, and say that channel gives about 400 W. They tuned the head unit to 125 Hz and report rich, clean bass with only a pinch of gain, and they recommend buying it and connecting it correctly. The amplifier figures are the reviewer's own and we have not checked them; about 400 W is a little under this sub's 450 W RMS rating.
DS18's page for the 10-inch GEN-X104D covers a different model. It shows four reviews, all in the top tier, though two of the entries are identical; they praise the bass impact and the sound quality. Treat them as a general hint about the GEN-X range, not as evidence about the 12-inch.
GEN-X124D against the GEN-X104D and ZR12
The DS18 GEN-X104D costs ₹1,000 less and is rated 50 W lower at 400 W RMS, with a listed response from 25 Hz instead of 20 Hz. Its Vas is 10.6 L against 23.4 L here. The DS18 ZR12 has a 2.5 in (61.6 mm) coil and a 750 W RMS rating, 300 W above this sub, but its sensitivity is 82 dB against 87.5 dB and it needs 168 mm of mounting depth against 146 mm. It also costs ₹7,000 more. The ZR12 comes with 4 Ω or 2 Ω coils at the same MRP.

Who should buy it, and who shouldn't
Buy the GEN-X124D if you want one 12-inch sub, can drive it from a monoblock near 450 W RMS at 2 Ω, and have the depth for a 146 mm driver plus its box.
Look elsewhere if you want a box volume published by DS18, you plan to run well above 450 W RMS, or you want independent reviews first. For higher ratings, DS18 lists the ZR12 at 750 W RMS and the EXL-TR12.4D at 1500 W RMS (₹59,990 MRP).
Installation notes for Indian cars
Check how much boot is left once a CNG cylinder or a full-size spare takes its share; a 12-inch driver with a box needs real depth. Follow the amplifier maker's guidance on cable gauge and fusing, and fit the fuse close to the battery. Our sound-damping guide explains how to deal with boot-lid and number-plate rattles.
VA3 Car Studio in Ghaziabad offers professional installation and DSP tuning, which is useful when the sub has to blend with the front speakers.
Price and where to buy
The DS18 GEN-X124D has an India MRP of ₹19,990. VA3 Car Studio often sells below MRP, so check the current offer on the GEN-X124D listing, which describes it as a genuine DS18 product.

The bottom line
The GEN-X124D is a 450 W RMS, 12-inch dual-coil driver, and its 900 W figure is a maximum. DS18 publishes no box volume for it, so plan for a properly built box and an amplifier near 450 W RMS at 2 Ω. Of the three subs compared here, it sits between the 10-inch GEN-X104D and the higher-rated ZR12.
DS18 GEN-X124D FAQ
Is the DS18 GEN-X124D a 900 W subwoofer?
No. DS18's web address and page title lead with 900 W, but its heading and key features give 450 W RMS, and 900 W is listed as maximum power. Size the amplifier from the RMS figure at the load you wire.
What amplifier suits the GEN-X124D?
Look for a monoblock whose rated RMS output at 2 Ω is close to 450 W, such as JL's JD500/1 at 500 W (14.4 V) or 400 W (12.5 V). The one reviewer on DS18's own store ran it from one channel of a two-channel amplifier they describe as 800 W RMS, about 400 W on that channel, with only a pinch of gain.
Will the GEN-X124D fit in my boot?
It needs a 277 mm cutout and 146 mm of mounting depth, plus the box around it. Measure your baffle and the space behind it, and ask us about a custom box if the boot is shallow.
