DS18 ZR12 Review: 12-Inch Dual-Coil Sub in 4 Ω and 2 Ω, 750 W RMS
The DS18 ZR12 is a 12-inch dual voice coil subwoofer sold in two versions: the ZR12.4D with two 4 Ω coils and the ZR12.2D with two 2 Ω coils. DS18 rates both at 750 W RMS and prints a separate 1,500 W figure as maximum power. Both have an India MRP of ₹26,990. They are listed on our ZR12.4D product page and our ZR12.2D product page.

Quick summary
Match the amplifier to 750 W RMS. The 1,500 W figure is DS18's maximum power, exactly double, and is not a continuous rating.
The two versions share the power ratings, sensitivity, response and the ₹26,990 MRP. The coils and Thiele/Small figures differ, so choose by the load your amplifier is rated for.
82 dB sensitivity, 25–200 Hz listed response, a 2.5 in (61.6 mm) coil and a 168 mm mounting depth.
DS18's own web store shows five reviews on the ZR12.4D page and none on the ZR12.2D page. We have not read any independent reviews.

750 W RMS or 1,500 W: reading the ZR12 labels
The web address and meta title of DS18's ZR12.4D page lead with 1500 W, while its heading leads with 750 W RMS, and the ZR12.2D address leads with 1500 W too. The key-features lists give 750 W as RMS power and 1,500 W as MAX power. Only the RMS figure is a continuous rating. DS18's published warranty terms exclude overpowering a subwoofer and clipping from improper tuning, so set the gain with care.
Pairing an amplifier with each version
Wired in parallel, the ZR12.4D presents 2 Ω and the ZR12.2D presents 1 Ω. Wired in series they present 8 Ω and 4 Ω. The table lists what three amplifiers we have covered are rated for at the loads that matter: Zapco's ST-1000XM III, JL's JD1000/1 (at 14.4 V and 12.5 V) and DS18's G3600.1D (from our listing).
Version and wiring | Load | ST-1000XM III | JD1000/1 | G3600.1D |
|---|---|---|---|---|
ZR12.4D in parallel | 2 Ω | 700 W | 1,000 W / 800 W | 900 W |
ZR12.2D in series | 4 Ω | 500 W | 600 W / 500 W | 500 W |
ZR12.2D in parallel | 1 Ω | 1,000 W | not rated | 1,200 W |
For a 750 W RMS sub, the ZR12.4D at 2 Ω is the closest fit among these three: 700 W, 800 W at 12.5 V and 900 W bracket the rating. At 4 Ω all three fall below 750 W. At 1 Ω, which is right at the line DS18's warranty terms draw, the two rated amplifiers are above it. None of the three listings gives an 8 Ω rating.
Enclosure and fit
DS18 lists no recommended box volume for either version. Its page text says the sub works in sealed and ported boxes, and it publishes Thiele/Small data, including an EBP of 29.8 for the ZR12.4D and 30.9 for the ZR12.2D. A low EBP is often read as pointing to a sealed box, but DS18 does not restrict the sub to one. Fs, Qts and Vas differ between the versions (Vas is 22.7 L and 21.2 L), so a box modelled for one is not automatically right for the other. DS18's general box chart is organised by driver size, not by model.
Check the 284 mm cutout and 168 mm mounting depth against your space. VA3 Car Studio builds custom subwoofer boxes to the volume you choose.
What owners and reviewers say about the DS18 ZR12
When we checked in October 2026, the only owner feedback we could read was on DS18's own web store, which is the maker's shop. We did not reach an independent test or forum thread, so treat what follows as a small sample. DS18's page for the ZR12.4D says it is based on five reviews, none dated: four in the top rating tier and one in a lower tier. The ZR12.2D page shows none.
Only one of the five names the exact model. That reviewer says they own the ZR12.4D and that it hits very hard. Another says the subs can take some power and that two of them on one amplifier get hot but keep playing, adding that they will not win competitions but suit a daily build. A third says it was what they expected and calls it a good product. A fourth says the subs are great but did not fit the tower boxes sold for a Jeep JKU as they had been told: they hit the back of the box until spacers were added. That is one person's report, but it is a reminder to check the 168 mm mounting depth against any ready-made box. The fifth is about tweeters and says nothing about the sub. The amplifiers and set-ups mentioned are the reviewers' own descriptions, which we have not checked.
The same DS18 line has feedback on other sizes, which is related rather than direct. The ZR10.4D page shows three top-tier reviews, including one for an SUV third-row seat that praises low-end extension. The ZR8.2D page shows three five-star reviews. Neither says anything about the 12-inch.
ZR12 against the other 12-inch DS18 subs
Of the four 12-inch DS18 subs in this group of reviews, the ZR12 has the second-lowest RMS rating and the second-lowest MRP. The DS18 GEN-X124D has an MRP ₹7,000 lower. The DS18 EXL-TR12.4D and the DS18 HOOL-X12.4DHE are rated far higher.
Specification | ZR12.4D | GEN-X124D | EXL-TR12.4D | HOOL-X12.4DHE |
|---|---|---|---|---|
RMS power | 750 W | 450 W | 1,500 W | 4,000 W |
Maximum power (not RMS) | 1,500 W | 900 W | 3,000 W | 6,000 W |
Sensitivity | 82 dB | 87.5 dB | 82 dB | 87 dB |
Mounting depth | 168 mm | 146 mm | 193 mm | 255 mm |
India MRP | ₹26,990 | ₹19,990 | ₹59,990 | ₹1,79,990 |
The ZR12 is also ₹2,000 above the DS18 ZR10, which is rated 700 W RMS.
Who should buy it, and who shouldn't
Buy the ZR12 if you want a 12-inch sub rated 750 W RMS, can supply an amplifier near that rating at the load you wire, and accept that DS18 gives no box volume. DS18's page meta description calls the ZR line entry-level; that is the maker's label, and the ratings above are what to buy against.
Look elsewhere if you want independent reviews, a published Xmax figure or a rating above 750 W RMS. The GEN-X124D is the lower-rated, lower-priced 12-inch.
Installation notes for Indian cars
A 12-inch driver needs 168 mm of depth behind the baffle, so measure the boot first and allow for a CNG cylinder or full-size spare if the car has one. An amplifier near 750 W RMS draws real current, so ask us about a power cable and fuse sized to the amplifier you choose. Our sound-damping guide covers rattles. VA3 Car Studio in Ghaziabad offers professional installation and DSP tuning.
Price and where to buy
The India MRP is ₹26,990 for the ZR12.4D and ₹26,990 for the ZR12.2D. VA3 Car Studio often sells below MRP, so check the current offers on the ZR12.4D listing and the ZR12.2D listing, both described as genuine DS18 products.

The bottom line
The ZR12 is a 12-inch, 750 W RMS dual-coil sub whose 1,500 W figure is a maximum. Pick the ZR12.4D or the ZR12.2D by the load your amplifier is rated for. DS18 gives no box volume and the only reviews we found are on DS18's own store, so budget for a properly built box and check the 168 mm depth first.
DS18 ZR12 FAQ
Is the DS18 ZR12 a 1,500 W subwoofer?
No. DS18 rates both versions at 750 W RMS and lists 1,500 W as maximum power. Its web addresses lead with 1500 W, so use the RMS line when matching an amplifier.
Are there reviews of the DS18 ZR12?
Yes, but only on DS18's own store. Its ZR12.4D page says it is based on five reviews, four in the top rating tier, and the ZR12.2D page shows none. We found no independent test when we checked in October 2026.
Which ZR12 version suits a 2 Ω amplifier?
The ZR12.4D, wired in parallel, presents 2 Ω. The ZR12.2D presents 4 Ω in series or 1 Ω in parallel. Check your amplifier's rated output at that load against 750 W RMS.
